It was designed tor three classes ot students: lll tor stu- dents who wish a broad training in general scientitic subjects, l2l tor students who have the time and means to secure a general education betore talcing up protessional curricula, and l3l tor students who plan to go into business or ina clustrial activities that do not require highly specialized training. ln this course science predorninates, but provision is made, however, tor a wide choice ot electives in business, engineering, and general studies. It is the only course ottered by the institution in which this wide choice ot electives is permitted. The General Science course will be discontinued with the class graduating June, l937. ARCHITECTURE l Obviously the main objective ot the course in Architecture is to train men to become architects. As designers and supervisors ot construction, architects are called upon to take a leading position in the building industry, and must possess a wide variety ot knowledge and capabilities. The school course is necessarily ot considerable breadth and duration. In addition there is a secondary objec- tive based on a recognition ot the tact that an architectural education may serve as a good preparation tor certain occupations outside the profession ot archi- tecture. Architecture is a creative field and combines the imaginative and the prac- tical. Those who have a leaning towards both the artistic and the scientitic find this an absorbing course ot study. The problem method used in design, by which each student worlcs out his own solution ot a given problem, parallels certain phases ot actual practice and serves as the best possible preparation tor the all-important role ot designer in an architects organization. CIVIL ENGINEERING Civil Engineering is the protession ot construction. lts story needs no writing tor it is engraved on the earth itselt. Modern canals, dams, highways, water sys- tems, bridges, and sky-scrapers picture civil engineering achievement as like- wise do the pyramids ot Egypt, the aquaducts ot Rome, and the centuries ot intervening construction. As long as construction work is required to further civilization, so long will there be a field ot endeavor tor these builders who will serve tor the most part, as they have in the past, unlcnown and unrecorded. The early engineers did not have the advantages ot an engineering education tor engineering colleges have been developed, with tew exceptions, in the last two generations, and, even now, the science ot how to build cannot be taught permanently since methods change rapidly as research increases lcnowledge. The Civil Engineer needs a thorough understanding ot fundamental data which he can use on each project rather than specialized intormation ot extremely limited application, theretore the Civil Engineering students at Tech are drilled thoroughly in basic subjects.
