CHEMISTRY AND CI-IEIVIIC!-IL ENGINEERING .f - Wa, GILBERT HILLHOUSE BOGGS, B.S., Ph.D. BS.. University of Georgia: Ph.D., University ot Pennsylvania, Phi Kappa Phi, Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Tau, Alpha Chi Sigma, Scabbard and Blade, Georgia Academy ot Science. 've ln l9Ol, with the growth ot the Georgia School ot Technology, a course in Engi- neering Chemistry was established. Purposely it was not called Chemical Engi- neering as it is now because ot the laclc ot tacilities to Otter studies recognized as essential to that degree. ln recent years department expansion has made it possible to change the title ot the course to Chemical Engineering. ln i906 there was tirst otiered a tour-year course in Chemistry tor those more interested in Chemistry as a pure science than its industrial applications. How- ever the engineering course has always been the more popular. ln normal times industries absorb our Chemical engineers who enter their pro- tession in chemical manufacturing plants with the hope ot becoming managers, control men, or operators, while others talce up the design ot machinery. Chem- ists are usually inclined toward laboratory and research, while many continue their studies in various graduate schools. lt is our beliet that the growth ot industrial activities in the South will otter an attractive field tor our graduate holding either degree. GILBERT HILLHOUSE BOGGS l-'lead ot Department ir I .24.
