Head (jf the School of Commerce ' P ' HE School of Commerce was estab- ■ ' ■ lislied in the fall of 191 2 with the idea of permitting engineering students to supplement their courses with business sub- jects and to give students desiring to enter upon a business career an opportunity to receive a technical training along admin- istrative lines. The success of this department has been marked and its courses and reputation are being recognized as the best in the South and very close to the best business schools in the country. The courses offered in the School of Commerce lead to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Commerce. Jamks Erskinh McUaniel B.A., M.A., LL.B. Director of the Co-O fierative Depitrtinent ' T ' HE Co-Operative Department was es- ■ ■ tablished in iqi2 to enable engineer- ing students to acquire practical knowledge and experience along with their class work. The schedules are so arranged that a stu- dent works four weeks and then returns to school and attends classes four weeks. The manufacturers in Georgia and the neighboring states who employ these stu- dents find that they take a great amount of interest in the work and results show tiiat the course is valuable and successful. The course com- bines the theoretical and practical phases of the study of ceramics and the depart- ment is well equipped with up-to-date test- ing laboratory, clay machinery room, kiln room and machine shop. The student ac- quires the basic knowledge which would enable him to prospect for raw materials and carry them through the process of manufacture to the finished product. The degrees of Bachelor of Science in Ceramic Engineering is awarded at the successful completion of the four-year course. Gilbert H. Boggs B.Sc, Ph.D. Head a) the Department of Chemistry ' T HEl department of Chemistry was established at Georgia Tech in 1888. The course serves to give the theoretical and practical means of advancing the pur- suit of this important science. The recent completion of larger quarters gives to Tech one of the most modern laboratories in the South. This course extends over a period of four ears with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Engineering Cheni- istPi ' . Parallel with the theoretical work are carefully planned laboratopi ' courses be- ginning with the first year in Chemistry and continuing throughout the four years in the sciences and other subjects studied. The four-year course leads to the de- gree of Hachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. ' T ' HE high object of the mechanical engineering profession is to consider and determine the most economic use of time, power and matter. True mechanical engineering is the economical adaptation of the means and opportunities existing to the end desired. The training given in the mechanical engineering department is a stepping stone towards membership in the profession, further dependent of course, on the in- dividual.
