With this naive idea we started going through the very diverse exper- iences of our year as freshmen. The systematic dissec- tion and the memorizing of anatomical terms introduced us to o language that we were to use for the rest of our lives. The complexities of physiological and biochemical mechanisms often seemed completely irrelevant, but somehow this was the way our organ systems functioned. The inevitable self-analysis after many psychiatric con- ferences was disturbing to many, but things always looked brighter after a few beers at the Peacock. There was much more to come. .xl 74 'fig f it" ' it Q -' X l Q - if ,X NN T f 4 xr, ' X, Q X L 6 T ii N '1:-' , xg f-Q i 0 fff,0x A ' XZ! After hours of looking for acid-fast bacilli no one would see we were to expose ourselves to this "bug," When many of us were asked to report to the Pharmacology office, invariably to discuss the results of the previous test, we did not seem to mind. We were also introduced to self-experimenta- tion and would often use our classmates as "guinea pigs" on techniques we were soon to try out on real patients. It took a genuine politician to get a "complete history and physical" from patients who informed us that three other doctors had already seen them. Early morning rounds, history, physical, and differential diagnosis, a good doctor-patient relationship, and SCUT were some ofour primary con- cerns. Slowly we were becoming more and more involved in this "new bag"-Medicine. Our tests became less and public speaking abilities were an important asset for our presentations. We were introduced to the subtle politics of dealing with nurses, at- tending physicians, and the administration . . . and we did get more elective time. K v X I wr ff f. We worked as "interns" in Arlington Hospital and D.C. General, with private patients and with those essentially our own, in emergency rooms as well as intensive care facilities. The variety of ex- periences was very rewarding. Even some of the babies we delivered were named after us! We took short vacations, had interviews and were soon matched to hospitals all over the nation. For most of us this was our last year at Georgetown-an unforgettable year. Ariiiui..1isisaf' MHKJAB-i. Their task is an admirable one. The interns and residents are also eager and important contributors to our education. However, their combined efforts would be of little value in a vacuum, that is, without the knowledge and ex- perience acquired from our patients. We dedicate this publication to them. For with their suffer- ing and with their smiles they have taught us about the prob- lems and the ioys of our pro- fession. We hope to remain perceptive of their lessons to become better physicians at their service. llllll Clinical Faculty 'NRM Aw' Y W ' ' N' 1, M fn.-My w " A , My a .WMM 4382. -Q., --all at-1 """" ' Mx ,4- 16-uf -,nw N,-W-va all-vis Of? tw "" 1-snuff-r,,7 'W A , lm K.
