Zaretski Seniors Enjoy Life at Washington Seniors 47 Senior Popularity Poll Most Likely to Succeed The future holds success for Keith Love and Linda Faghih. They've shown us the quality work and leadership skills necessary to make it in the world. Your fellow seniors hope that you will fulfill our wishes and make us all proud. Good luck in the future! Most Friendly Even though most of us are friendly (except after failing a mid-term or final exam), Eddy Tak and Rita Gee have seemed to not allow anything to get them down. They've both been supportive friends to many of us This is just our way of thanking you two for always showing us that we are not the pits in the life of a bowl of cherries. 48 Seniors Most Studious The two people chosen as the Brainiest” this year are Michael Hyman and Goldie Lee. They've made most of us envious of their high marks and may have even encouraged us to do better. In any case, we can all be assured that if we need to know something, we can always refer to our walking encyclopedias. Best Smile David Fukuda and Kathy Liu have two of the best smiles in the Class of '84. Their smiles have brightened our days when we have been down, and even made us smile. Thanks for sharing your happiness with us' Senior Popularity Poll Best Dressed Best Figure While the rest of us have been busy suffering through homework assignments, Charles Jaymes and Lana Lee have kept up with the latest fashions. They've managed to juggle school and shopping with the greatest of ease. You can count on these two to tell you what's in and what's not David Leong and Denise Scobie are the two with the best bodies. They've earned our admiration for their commitment to fitness. You always know they're around when you see heads turn in their direction. Best Eyes Biggest Flirt Eric Lannon and Arleda Williams seem to have those sparkling eyes that always catch your attention and seem to talk to you without verbal words. Just having these two look at you can brighten your day! Some people consider flirting fun, but Label Atkinson and Frances Wong consider it an art and boy have they mastered it! Flirting hasn't af- fected these two in a bad way - they are two of the most caring peo- ple we have at Wash. Seniors 49 Senior Popularity Poll Best Personality Their magnetic personalities have earned them their position in this year's poll. David Nakasu and Judy Wong have shown their wonderful ability to get along with everyone. The two of you will truly go far with the help of your great personalities. David Leong and Elaine Woo have probably kept the hearts of girls and boys beating longest. With their good looks, they've managed to clean out flower shops everytime a flower gram sale comes along. Best Looking Most Talented Jeff Henschel and Katina Bountouvas have proven to us that they are true artists. They've impressed us with their roles on stage, and have delighted us with their many talents in band, choir, and drama. Your fellow classmates wish you well in the future. Most Popular Teacher This year's winners were nominated for several reasons. Some have said that these teachers were able to instruct us better than others, or they could have been nominated for their great personalities, or their extraordinary ability to get along with the students. In any case, the Senior Class has selected Mr. Williams, Mr. Donn, and Mrs. Camozzi as our most popular teachers. Congratulations! 50 Seniors Senior Popularity Poll Most Rowdy Tony White and Maria Calloway have always managed to make others aware of their presence. They may be the Radical Teenagers” of to- day, but they could be the powerful politicians of tomorrow. This year's winners have provided us with laughter throughout our high school years. They have made it less nerve-racking and more tolerable. I'm sure that we won't forget all the laughter that Richard Leider and Lauren Kaufman have brought us. Most School Spirit These two people have encouraged us to go on when times were tough and cheered along with us when times were good. In any case, Darrel Fields and Kim Huston have always been there to keep the Class of 1984's spirit alive. You two have done a great job! Most Athletic Washington athletes are exceptional athletes. Throughout the years they ve shown the rest of us the meaning of being gracious winners and being proud losers. Congratulations to Derek Crenshaw and Christina Leong. What made the year of 1983-84 so special? What do we have to look forward to in 1984-85? The past year was a very memorable year filled with joy and grief, winning and losing, laughter and sorrow. The year had many memorable events, including the Miss America Contest, Michael Jackson's sweep at the Grammy Awards, the free Diana Ross concert in Central Park, the breakup of the Who, and the tragic death of Karen Carpenter. Along with countless numbers of others. The rise of Michael Jackson to stardom awed millions, together with the record breaking sales of his Thriller album, exceeding 22 million copies, and his hit videos. Former Russian leader, Yuri Andropov, who had been missing from the public eye for a number of months due to illness, was finally pronounced dead after a liver transplant operation. For many years Karen Carpenter had been fighting the disease, Anorexia Nervosa, a condition that has ultimately caused her death through the results of star- vation. (Her fans will truly miss her, a fine performer and person. David, the Bubble Boy, has lost his battle with a disease causing his immune system not to function, in a last attempt to give him vital capacity. It was hoped that with the new medical technology, they could give him life outside his bubble. This year has seen a number of foreign performers, for instance David Bowie and Boy George. Their na- tionality has done nothing to stop their domination of the American Music Charts. Although these things have already happended, we will not soon forget them. They have made 1983-84 a memorable year. Top: This year has seen a new breed of Computer Thieves. Middle. President of the United States, Ronald Reagan. The beginning is always the toughest and the end may have been just as tough if it had not been for the following people I wish to begin by thanking Jake Barker and his crew of photographers for coming to take photos of our undergrads and undergrad officers. Without him this section would not have been completed. Thanks to Mrs. Marcus for her endless hours of typing and her con- fidence in believing it could be done. I'm wishing her that each day will be an orchid day! Thanks to Agnes Leong for helping me with the many quad-paks and picture stampings. Also for being there to calm me down when the going got tough. Much gratitude also goes to Lori, Lois, Angie, Annette, Martha, Aimee, Emily and Linda for all of the picture numberings that they successfully completed. Last, but not least, I would like to thank Mr. Tom Walker for helping me to understand what I was doing. He spotted the little errors while explaining what was going wrong. The Washington yearbook staff is fortunate to have him as our rep. and friend. Yearbook class 3rd period was the class I enjoyed the most because of the friendly atmosphere that came along with it and the many friends that I made! I'm wishing everyone a fantastic summer vacation and to the class of 1985 . . . “We finally made it! Josephine Shew Undergrad Editor Friend (trend) 1. one attached to another by esteem, respect, and affection 2. a person whom one knows well and is fond of in p p I N C I P A L Friendship is the stabilizer that gets you through hard- ships in both private and public life. No one is so indepen- dent and secure that he does not need a friend. I'm per- sonally thankful for my friends and their support in good and bad times. I make every effort to return that support. I hope that our seniors, during their four years at George Washington High School, have made friendships that will last a lifetime. Although high school becomes a thing of the past, friendships should remain. Al Vidal 112 FACULTY I Throughout my travels and experiences, I've found that one friend in a lifetime is much; two are many; and three are hardly possible. I've also discovered that there are three kinds of friends: best friends; guest friends; and pest friends. Of course, the latter being least desirable. Friends in no small part, therefore, were influential in my professional growth and development. Friends are important to everyone. When life is go- ing well and problems are few, friends can be taken for granted. However, when problems occur, and you need help, it is then that you realize who your friends are - they don't ask questions, they don't expect payment, they are simply there. A D M S T P A T C N A s s i s t a n t P r i n c P a H E L E N M C K E N N A Friends have always been very important to me. I favor a team approach to life. I like to share what I have with others, and have been fortunate in making many friends among the students and teachers I have worked with in the past twenty years at George Washington High School. The meaning of friendship is when someone is will- ing to listen. In my life many people have listened to my problems and concerns. These people were able to guide me through troubled times. I have learned from them that if I listen to others and keep an open mind, I too will be a better person and also gain a friend. Thanks to Mrs. Marcus and her patience, I was able to juggle my school schedule, my jobs, my social life, and my Bette Midler Trip! I never imagined that I was going to achieve as much as I have at this school. It makes me feel proud to look upon George Washington, the faculty members, and my friends with very special feelings. I think I can speak for all the dedicated staff members by stating that a yearbook is a difficult book to put together. If any of you in- tend to take this class in the near future, prepare yourself for a lot of grey hairs, ulcers, and total chaos — BUT ... in the end there is much glory. I hope each and every one of you set high goals for yourselves. Remember never be discouraged — as long as you are content with whom you are, you have good friends, you accept your fate and destiny, and you live for today - not tomorrow. I wish abundant love and happiness to all the '84 staff members, to both Mr. and Mrs. Marcus (and Duke) have a hot summer vacation, and to my family and friends - God, Love You!! The preseason presented the team with many disappointing moments, but the game against the South Delta Sundevils of Vancouver, Canada, helped to boost the spirits of our talented young athletes. This season proved to be one filled with many surprising situations. It began on a wet, rainy day at Woodrow Wilson High. The Eagles went into the game feeling confident of victory, but alas fell in defeat 8-0. junior Troy Bouldin threw 11 passes with 5 completed. The team's total gain was only 75 yards. Lowell High was our team's next oppo- nent, and once again, our team was defeated. At this point in the season, things looked grim for our less than mighty Eagles. The team's first home game was against the Balboa Bucs and proved to be one of disappointment because of still another setback: sadness due to the injury of senior running back, Keith Love, which put him out for the rest of the season. Yet, also was the discovery of a forfeit which gave the Eagles a win over Wilson. The game against the Mission Bears proved to be still another heartbreaking one. With half the season gone, the Eagles had a 1-3 record, quite the opposite of the previous season. Walking into the McAteer Jaguars' stadium, the team arriv- ed anxious to play and the spirit of winn- ing had finally arrived. The recovery of a fumble by Kahlil Hughes gave the Eagles good field position and also the oppor- tunity to gain an 8-0 victory over McAteer. The last home game of the season was against the Lincoln Mustangs. Not only did the team emerge victorious by winning their second straight game, but also by retaining the Bell Game Trophy for the third year in a row. On a sunny day in November, a ray of hope for still another triumphant season shone through. Not only had our team won on the field, but also off! For news of another forfeited game, this one over Mission, gave our team a 3-2 record. The next game was not only the last of the season, but also against the Galileo Lions. If it had not been for a safety made by 85 John Ford, the Eagles would not have soared. Not only had the team broken Galileo's season long win streak and defeated them for the third year in a row, they had finished the season in se- cond place and were in the playoffs against Wilson. The field at Kezar was a muddy one and if it had not been for a 37 yard field goal by Junior Stephan Rudd, the Eagles would not have had the opportunity to once again play on Turkey Day. Thurs- day, November 26, 1983, was a wet and dreary day, but the spirits of our mighty Eagles did not flutter. The first three quarters of the game remained scoreless; tnen Galileo put 6 points on the board. Our team went out and played even harder, but unfortunately it was just too late. Due to a clipping call, the Eagles had a 53 yard run by Troy Bouldin taken back to the 35 yardline, ending the game at 6- 156 0 Galileo. Credit: ® 1983 Bob Clay S.F. Fullback Ivan Parker was injured in the third game after leading the team in scoring. His loss was a big blow to the team's title hopes. The team was composed of many fine sophomores who should become fine varsity players. Some of those players were Shann Chu, Robert Fung, Mike Hodge, Joe Lo, Don Okry, Robert Styles, Lonnie Green, and An- thony Lucas. Wrestling is one of the most demanding sports. The wrestler is the one athlete who must meet his opponent and do battle completely on his own. He must be ready to meet, and cope with, the unex- pected, the unusual, and even the unheard of moves, tactics, and holds of the sport. Also, each wrestler must maintain a certain weight throughout the season. Although the Varsity Wrestling Team ended the round-robin season with a disappointing 3-5 record, there were two All-City Champions on the team. Senior David Fukuda, 121 lbs., defending All-City Cham- pion, retained his title in a breath- taking three period match, coming from behind to defeat Saladin Banks of Balboa with a 6-4 point decision. Senior Armand Walker, 178 lbs., astonished all with his spectacular 8-6 point victory against Mike Zimmer- man of Lowell. Special thanks to Coach Gilbert Bagaman for the time and effort, and also to the managers Leilani Chow, Rita Gee, and Cindy Lee.
