W. H. S. stu- dents is Mr. Walter G. Gingery at the microphone. When we were freshmen he welcomed usp when we were sophomores and juniors he advised us on many pro- blemsg now as we are seniors he bids us farewell. Walter G. Gingery, B. S., Mount Union College, Alliance, Ohiog M. A., University of Chicago, M. A., McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, additional V graduate study I.U. Extension and University of i Chicago. A Mr. Gingery came to Indianapolis as head of the Shortridge High School Mathematics Department in 1917. He served in this capacity until 1927, when he became the first principal of G. W. H. S. Dedication N "I hope that I shall al'wo.ys possess firmness enough to 'main- tain what I consideo' the 'most enrifzble of titles, the chafrficter of an honest mlm." We at George Washington High School have frequently seen this motto in the main hall and in the Sm'z'eyo'r, but perhaps have never realized that we have among us a man who exemplifies this high ideal of George Washington. He is our friend, counselor, and administrator. He is always willing to take time from his busy day to help and advise those of us who come to him for help. He has nourished George Washington High School from its infancy until now it is approaching its twenty-hfth year with con- tidence. It is really a privilege to dedicate our 1951 Senior Post, The Wuslzingtonian, to Mr. Walter Gingery. three ,, N ,. Q: 2 ' 1. N i s Q, .gi-3 , ,,.,., ,. The planning of a dummy and picture-taking schedules were the first major problems of the staff. Phyllis Strouse and Jimmye Sue Fox, plus scissors, rubber cement-, and lots of hard work, succeeded in mounting the 12011 underclassmen pictures. Bill Porter's contribution was the sports section. Ann Swallers and Elizabeth Hill, senior editors, saw that all the lovely seniors had their pictures taken. They also had charge of the faculty pictures. Carol Watson's respon- sibility was the activities section. The book was financed by a subscription campaign under the leadership of Carol Johnson, business manager. Mary Kay Norman, editor-in-chief, helped on all sections and had chaige of the introductory pages. In Jan- uary, Beverly Vargo, Shirley Bailey, and Jackie Polley joined the staff, and were very helpful in writing copy. Mrs. Betty Werthinan was the faculty adviser. Sports An important part of this book is the sports' section, and an important part of our school is athletics. Washington offers a fine athletic program for both boys and girls of all ages and sizes. In re- turn, these students bring back honor and glory to our school through their activities. We are fortunate in having capable coaches, directors, and administrators to cultivate our sports' program. High lights of the year included ten straight basketball victories, city and sectional championships in cross country, and as this book goes to press, we are looking forward to successful baseball and track seasons. Mr. Henry Bogue, dean of city football coaches, ended a brilliant coaching career at the end of a 1950 so-so football season. After twenty-three successful years in the Washing- ton football spotlight, "Mr, Football" retired to the sidelines. This yearis season was highlighted with a 7-6 victory over a trough southern rival-New Albany. The Purple were plag- ued with injuries the entire season, which prevented an an- ticipated successful season. With ten returning lettfermen, Coach Bogue formed a squad which came so close to victory so many times. Five games were lost by only one touchdown while the Tech and Ripple games were the only decisive de- feats. Left guard Jim Peterchetf and Captain Bill Cook were rated among the tops in the city by sports scribes. Petercheff showed brilliant defensive work, and Cook was valuable with his punting ability. forty-two The 1950-51 reserve pigskin squad brought home 6 Wins to 1 loss. The Ben Davis game ended at a deadlock of 13-13. They bow- ed to Howe by two touchdowns at a score of 13-0. Against other city opponents, Manual, Attucks, Broad Ripple, Sliortrldge, Tech, and Cathedral, they racked up the overwhelming scores of 25-U, 38-0, 2.7-6, 20-U, 14-7, and 13-12 respectively. Varsity Basketball This 1950-51 team possessed an outstanding degree of balance. lt was one of the best teams in Indianapolis and vicinity. It could run and it could shoot, and yet no one person was outstanding. They had a string of ten straight victories as they went into the Sectionals. In the Sectionals they met a determined Southport team, which they had already defeated by eighteen points during the regular season's play. However, in this game the tide turned, and the Cardinals from Southport defeated our Continentals. Southport hit for a phenomenal .416 for the entire game and .612 for the second half. Whatever happens to us seniors when we leave this school, we shall never forget our basketball team of 1950-51. forty-four This year's Purple squad consisted of seven seniors. Reserve Basketball The reserve basketball squad under the tutoring of dependable Amos Slaton enjoyed another winning season, they won eleven and lost eight. The team was comprised mostly of "rookies". Heading the one- year-man parade was Phil Peterson who finished out the season on the varsity. Varsity Coach Dave Hine has great hopes for Peter- son. Tom Dobbs, Joe Bogue, and Kenneth Barnes were other one- year-men. The 'told pro's" were Don L-ickliter and Nelson Jones. The reserves were beaten in their city tournament opener by a strong Tech quintet. Bill Hedges, a member of the team, be- came ill at the start of the season, but will be back next year to be a flower in Mr. Slaton's garden of basketball. forty-seven V mv. - Cross Couniry Golf The cross country team brought Washington its first city championship and its first sectional champion- ship, and they finished eighth in the state meet.
