In earlier years the grounds now occupied by this school were used as the site for the circus or carnival. Annually the hearts of Indianapolis citizens, big and little, beat high in anticipation of the gala event. To the Big Top they came for knowledge, a bit of ro- mance, and a thrilling adventure. Not least among the animals most beloved by the crowds which milled about the circus wagons was the lion, proud, dauntless and royal, unafraid of the spec- tators. Then, in 1927, the Big Top was replaced by a modern brick, educational plant known to all Indianapolis citi- zens as -George Washington High School. To this building came fifteen hundred eager stu- dents, searching again for knowledge, soul stirring ad- venture, and perhaps even a bit of romance. Here again was found the lion. From cage to crest he had been transplanted. In the school flag he stood rampant, emblem of rapid growth and proud achieve- ment. Q43 PRESENTED FUR THE FIRST TIME KNOWLEDGE, ADVENTURE It was under the Big Top that they found me. Circus grounds they called it. Young and old, in those first happy years of the 1900's found education with laughter and joy on that happy spot. Three sawdust rings provided thrilling ad- venture and romance. Always, I, Ramsey, the Lion, was there. I roared a a warm Welcome. I was the King of the Sawdust Trail. Then from cage to crest I went. Where the Big Top had been, a beautiful new struc- ture arose. Boys and girls still came to their favorite spot. They still found education with laughter and joy. Here they still found adventure and romance. As their school flag they adopted the crest with a lion rampant. So I, Ramsey the Lion, stayed on. LION RAMPANT- EXITUS ACTA PROBAT, the outcome is proof of my effort. ' For in 1946 I am released for one brief stroll among my beloved haunts by the Senior Post Class of George Washington High School. Enjoy with me my brief so- journ under the modern Big Top. Athletic games emerge from the physical education department, as do the Continental Girls' Athletic Asso- ciation and the Boosters' Club. The science, history, language, music, and commer- cial departments offer clubs called Science Club, Civic Quest, Glee Clubs, Colonial Chorus, Latin Club, and Business Builders. The Student Union is representative of the student body, and plans projects for the welfare of the school. The Washingtonians, a Senior Girls' organization, sponsors pleasant relations between the girls of the school starting the school year with the Big Sister party for Freshmen girls in the Fall. ROTC offers many opportunities for training in leadership. Honor Society gives national distinction to out- standing students at George washington High School. Closely related, and meeting student needs are such groups as Hi-Y, Girl Reserves, Horizon Club, KoKette Klub. Joining with other schools for the promotion of understanding of mutual problems is the Interschool Council. Here are the sparkling lumina1'ies who have been elected to the National Honor Society. The interschool Council was organi.z1ed for the ex- press purpose of promoting better relations between other high schools of the city. It also promotes better under- standing between the pupils and the citizens of the com- munity. Two representatives, at least, from each school are chosen by the faculty. This council meets once a month' at the school board office with Mr. William Evans, directer of publications. Aiding in the administration of the Big Top's ac- tlvities is the Student Union made up of representatives chosen by the student body to confer, plan and carry out projects under the administration of the Key Men. 1825 THEY ER E Morale and pep producers are The Boosters. The Big Top would be incomplete without their colorful, original, enthusiastic response to every call for a pep session. Serving faithfully through the year are the Washingtonians, Senior girls' organiza- tion. They act as Big Sisters to Freshman girlsg sponsor teas for mothers of studentsg in short, assume responsibility for friendly and helpful re- lations among the girls at G. XV. H. S. The Continental Girls Athletic Association has as its goal the promotion of better health and enthusiastic support of recreational activi- ties connected with it. They are the muscle-build- ers, these C. G. A. A.ers. 4835 84 THEY ARE AMBASSADOR COLONIAL CHORUS: These students pro- vide the never-to-be forgotten music. They fill the air with their lilting voices and present a lovely sight in their Colonial costumes. Queen of the Big Top. Her beautiful voice wins wide acclaim. 0 The echoes of the steam caliope may have died away, but the strains of sweet music pro- duced by the Colonial Chorus still linger on. . . - - Q 1,4 U . .K .- ,Q I- L, . EPILOGUE So it happened that on the spot Where a circus had roared in from somewhere, built its little city of tents, offered a fleeting vision of breath-taking enchantment, of hair-raising feats, of fairylike Wonderland, a lion crouched in his cage and watched and listened. Then on that spot the circus quietly folded its tents and vanished into the night mysteriously. But the lion. stayed. For on that spot a building rose toward the blue sky. It housed a little city of classrooms, shops, and labora- tories. Here Was permanence, opportunity, but enchant- ment still. The lion rose and stood rampant, symbol of pro- gress and achievement. You can find him there on the crested banner of George Washington High School. f 87 J: mymfgQfmgnwyrgwgwfrwlgfmu QNX fmmwwylwx Y ! 1'Af 1f11 4 H ., 62 Sf f NPSQAX navy f cf7' ""H" X XM 'a . .
