COMPASS George Washington High School Alexandria, Virginia Volume 38This year's Compass is dedicated to the students a"0 staff of G.W. during their yea' here Tne Compass sta“ has a spec-a reason for doing this The students at George Washington are Alexandra s the United States anc maybe even the cric s future They have studied and they have not studied They have listened a lot and they have not listened a lot. 3ut this year has prepared at least some of them for when they will take the place that their parents have he'd m the woric — when they are in control of the things to come "hey must take the changes going on in our city, country and world m stride and make these changes work The Compass staff has tried to relate the G.W. student to his future and it has tried to relate G.W. to the world. Yes. you say. but why dedicate it to the staff of George Washington also? To who else have G.W. students listened? Who else has taught, guided and tried to prepare G.W. students for their futures? And so this year's book is dedicated to them — those students and staff — those of the years to come. 2STAFF _____ FRESHMEN. . SOPHOMORES CLUBS _____ ACTIVITIES. . SPORTS. . . All departments of the school made every attempt to put their best foot forward for this P.T.A. affair. Worthy of special mention were the performance given by the stage band in the auditorium, the series of demonstrations given by the Physical Education Department in the gymnasium, and the displays put forth by the Language Department in the cafeteria. The photo below shows just a small sample of the French pastries prepared by members of the French Club. 142ATEENDN!! DRILL tem try-outs ! h«r« will b« o ciirwc Worth 2(,-3o oi TX k ilhotrii US. As the year ends and as the book is completed. I find myself looking back and thinking "how true." When this year's staff mombers began its work, they were all new to the publications business and full of a lot of zest, vitality, creativity, and idealism — then the work began. Soon they learned putting together a school yearbook was many long hours of hard work, dedication, stamina, and a deep sense of responsibility. In othor words, the staff was challenged by all the characteristics too many young people try to avoid. They met the challenge — some much more than others — and the COMPASS is now completed. So to the gang I would like to express a very »mcere thanks for all the effort each one put forth and I would like to thank you for the privilege of working with such a fine group of young people. Congratulations on a lob well done.
