GEORGE W WINGATE HIGH SCHOOL Dr. Robert L. Schain, Principal 600 Kingston Avenue Brooklyn, New York 11203 DEDICA TION For twenty years, Mosaic has served as a vehicle for the literary, photo- graphic and artistic creativity ofWingate students. More than an outlet for this esthetic expression, MOSAIC 19 77 is an at- tempt to show the truth as we see it in New York City. This truth entails cruelty and injustice as well as joy and freedom. However, the ugliness in truth must be faced and understood to be eradicated, so the acknowledgement of and dissatis- faction with this ugliness is the only way to achieve a truth that is filled with beauty. Through our art, photography and poetry, we have tried to show truth as it appears to us, and to create a lasting image of beauty. Pervading this truth is the vibrant energy and optimism that is youth. It is in this spirit that we dedicate our MOSAIC 1977 to New York City, -The MOSAIC Staff Wingate High School The Big Apple. PRINCIPAL' MESSAGE Dr. Robert L. Schain Principal You have completed your high school education just as our nation has entered its third century of existence. Thus, your graduation from high school begins your own third stage of life --- from childhood to adolescence, and now, to adulthood. What you do from here on will depend largely on your own goals, resources, energy and fortune. A successful life depends on many factors, and your job is to combine all these factors to your best advantage. We have tried to provide you with the necessary tools to do this job --- the academic skills, the positive attitudes toward your fellow citizens, the knowledge necessary to function well in society and the ability to work with other people. We have done our best at Wingate. I hope you will continue to do your best in whatever you do in the future. I wish all of you the very best of luck and success. If D! WHAT DUES THE W STAND F OR? A Short Biographical Sketch Of General George W Wingate 4a.afW George Wood Wingate was born in New York City on July 1, 1840. ln 1853, he graduated from P.S. 40 and enter- ed the Free Academy Know called the College of the City of New Yorkl. However, within a few months, necessity forced him to leave school to work as an errand boy in a local law firm. But George Wingate did not give up his education. During the next few years, he con- tinued his studies at night. He especially worked on his athletic training. Two nights a week, he practiced in a gymnasium. Wingate's interest in physical health is admirable. He was physically handicapped due to a severe burn in early childhood, but through hard, rigorous, persistent training, he be- came a man of unusally well-balanced physique. lVloreover, he was skilled in fencing, tennis, golf, gymnastics, boxing and wrestling. As a sportsman, he glorified in the great outdoors and was an expert hunter and a crack rifle shot. This love of athletics and sports George Wingate never lost. When civil war split the nation, he rendered conspicuous service to his country, serv- ing in the 22nd N.Y. Regiment as General George W. Wingate. ln later years, the General distinguished himself as a skillful lawyer, an active mem- ber ofthe Board of Education of New York, and a valued supporter of many recreational clubs and civic organizations. ln 1867, as an officer in the New York National Guard regiment, he formulated the rules for systematic rifle practice and made it a part of mili- tary instruction in this country. He was instrumental in organizing the National Rifle As- sociation of America in 1871 and was its president for 25 years. The General's greatest achievement was his helping to found the Public Schools Ath- letic League in 1903. He never lost his love for sports and strove continuously to spread the gospel of athletics and games as a means to sound health and good citizenship. To a young friend he wrote: Athletics teaches better than anything else promptness, quickness in emergencies, self-reliance, control of the temper, square dealing and determination - all those mil-ualities which will best enable you to bear yourself manfully in the great battle of i e. As president of P.S.A,L. the General worked hard to urge upon the Board of Education and local government officials the importance of providing more athletic fields, more ade- quate school yards, and more after-school centers. He rallied newspapers, athletic clubs, colleges, and universities to give their support to school athletics through trophies, awards, and scholarships. On lVlarch 22, 1928, General George Wood Wingate, lawyer, soldier, sportsman, and great civic leader, died. W MOSAIC? WHA T'S THA T? Our school yearbook gets its name from the beautiful mosaic outside the main entrance to the building by the steps. A mosaic is a unified composition created by assembling separate pieces of material. IVlosaicists of old used to' select tiny pieces of colored stones, set them close together, and give the surface a high-gloss polish to eliminate the separateness of the parts. It is an art form most distinguishable from painting. One of the reasons for the special appeal in a mosaic is that the viewer unconsciously takes an active part in the creation of the unified picture. If the viewer looks at a mosaic from a distance, he sees it as a unified whole, but upon closer inspection, he can discern the individual and unique elements each part of the design contributes to the whole. The colorful Wingate mosaic by the steps pictures the many and various courses of study and skills offered in the school. Beginning at the lower left of the mosaic, the fine arts of painting and sculpture are depicted, just beyond is a guitar symbolizing music, above, the masks of tragedy and comedy represent drama, and an open book suggest liter- ature. ln the center of the mosaic on the bottom are a saw, a hammer and a compass, stand ing for various aspects of the industrial arts, to the right of that are beakers, test tubes and charts representing the sciences, above them are a set of triangles, one inside the othe other, and alongside them is a spiral, all signifying mathematics courses. To the very upper right is a pitcher of water and somewhat below is a shape that resembles a water faucet- probably meant to signify our home arts classes. Between the pitcher and the fauce is a needle with colored cloths - representing our clothing and fashion courses. And finally in t1e lower right corner are a baseball, a football, and a baseball bat. We all know what they stand for! lf you look for yourself at our mosaic mural outside the main entrance you will probably see a great deal more too. ln the dedication section of an earlier yearbook, we likened the organization of the school to the structure of the outside mosaic: A mosaic, is a combination of different pieces of colored glass and tiles. When they are put together, they form a beautiful picture or design. Wingate is one huge mosaic. The different pieces of glass and tiles are the students, the teachers, the parents, the admin- istration, and the different clubs and teams. When these are all united, they form the Win- gate Mosaic. l r,l t I The graduating class of 19 77 also takes pride in being a part of the great Wingate IVlosaic. z'nY:m:4:s6..y.9: 1114-w1.5 sms .,l'as,:.: nailz: . Zaffran 21 ,l Y 7 Godspeed While we are attempting to highlight the positive aspects of New York City this year, we cannot entirely overlook the negative. Over the past few years Wingate High, along with every other school in thecity, has suffered tremendous cuts in services and personnel ln the light of this we are unhappily adding for the first, and we hope the last, time a new section to our yearbook. On the following pages we present pictures of our teachers who have left Wingate in the past year alone. Many of them were forced to leave as a direct result of the severe budget cuts. We learned much in our four years here, and now we walk away with a whole new outlook on things. We saw our teach- ers, classmates and friends in different ways while struggling through the jungle of rooms, through which we shall reach our ultimate goals. lt's very heartbreaking now that we have come to the end of our high school career, but now we go on. Each time l read this passage I shall remember you Wingate and all you did for me. We say goodbye knowing that a most remarkable and enjoyable time of our lives is coming to an end but at the same time is becoming a beginninlg of a memorable past. This farewell is not only a goodbye among friends on graduation day,.,but it is a farewell to a part of our lives and a life-style that can only be relived in our imaginations and memo- ries. It is a farewell to the unity of togetherness of school life and the meeting place of our adolescence. lt is a farewell to the community of students, teachers and classrooms, a farewell to friendships that are immortal and priceless, a farewell to teams, clubs and ac- tivities, it is a farewell to Wingate High School. But for every ending, there is a new beginning. And so we go from farewell to greet- ings! Greetings to a new life of adventure! Greetings to a world that will test our indepen- dence! There is college or business and careers. We no longer observe life, but now we face an important decision - making and goal-setting. And so with a tear in our eye, as well as with this note of hope and excitement, we bid a fond farewell to our friends, our teachers and our adolescent selves - and move on to new worlds and new adventures. -- The Mosaic '77 Staff s ., 43 a if Q at .ll Wingate High not only offers the finest in educational programs and facilities, but also a large selection of clubs, teams and act- ivities from which students may choose to join the ones they are most interested in. Queens .. ...Staten Island COUNTY CState Designation? ...........NewYork Kings .. . ...Bronx .......Queens .Richmond THE BIG APPLE All of us have lived in New York City for a reasonable period of time. Though some might have lived here for a lifetime while others only for a few years, the difference does not diversify the feeling that we all have for the city. Upon graduation, some of our fellow students will be leaving the city for either a higher education or an occupational opportun- ity. Others will stay in the city to continue their pursuits in life. To students going else- where, the City of New York will become an image of daydreams and a cause of constant nostalgia. Whether we remain in the city or not, the traces of life here and the love for peace will never be effaced from our minds. Then what has been the meaning of life in the City of New York? To what degree has the impact of the social and cultural life in the city affected us? At this point all of us ought to have answers to these questions --for understanding the past as well as for coping with the future. In every known language, New York City has been called a melting pot, a colorful phrase which through its vividness, is true when we consider the crowded subways, the busy buses and the huge factories - places of forced encounter arranged by the grotesque size of the city and the exigencies of breadwinning. If we take the view from another angle, we get an entirely different picture. Think of Manhattan and we conjure up a picture of the twin towers of the World Trade Center soaring majestically into the sky. Looking down wall street we see an economic giant whose ac- tions govern the economic well-being of the world's economy. Across the Hudson River, the Statue of Liberty stands with her torch radiating the light of liberty and iustice which we all agree is vital to our survival as a democracy. Halfway through the city is the IVIu- seum of IVlodern Art in which the fine works of Picasso and many other artists are exhibited, having a profound effect upon the cultural aspects of our lives. Back at Radio City lVlusic Hall in Rockerfeller Center there is even more excitement- the 'Rockettes' who through their animated dance present to the audience an image of a life of grace andibeauty. Fi- nally, on the east side of Manhattan, there is the United Nations Building in which history is being made. New York City is a great city. Nevertheless it has its dark side, and we must be real- istic. What is important is that the good must outweigh the bad. If Greenwich Village, with its narrow streets where artists crowd, is a reflection of city life, then those who are pluilskiing their interests in the Public Library are all but contributing to preserve this way o I e. Before we Wingaters depart from our Banjo school, erhaps we all agree that it was the city which has furnished us with a decent education under which we underwent the disci- plines of learning and through which we dedicated ourselves to a preservation of the Ameri- can way of life. The merry Japanese Cherries at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden revive their beauty in an annual cycle. The flowers bloom in the spring and wither in the fall, and this cycle goes on and on. In a sense, our city struggles in a cycle similar to that of the Japanese Cher- ries. Sometimes we enjoy a state of prosperity. Sometimes we get into a tangle of chaos. The two phenomena alternate from time to time. What gives us the spirit and the vitality to strive forward is our firm determination to lead a pleasant, meaningful and productive life. This determination has become a part of us and will remain with us to matter where we go. -- Chun-Chee Lau MOSAIC STAFF PAGE, Lisa Burns lan Carter Debbie Hailey Annette James Kevin Jefferson Co-Editor Co-Editor Co-Editor Business Editor Co-Editor 1 Qi , V 25,3 JAMA ff Oscar Malcolm Deborah Perry Rodnejy Pope Merron Walters Dennis Branscum Photographic Co-Editor Art E itor Managing Editor Faculty Advisor Editor Werhner Olivier Deborah Perry Kevin Jefferson Ralph Perrine Cheryl Todd Annette James Debbie Hailey Joanne Hailey Yoselin Mendez Merron Walters Lisa Burns Cecilia Martinez Rodney Pope Gary Williamson Oscar Malcolm Donna Dyer Chun-Chee Lau Letecia Rodriguez lan Carter ALMA MATER Here are the hopes placed in our hearts by Wingate.
