« 1 The cast of Suspect” in action. Tense and mysterious was Suspect, the first all-school play pre- sented at Clark on November 16, 1951. Curtain time found the audience at Polcurn, Cornwall, where Mrs. Smith (Jane Madsen), an eccentric widow, lived with her son, Robert ( Bob Guy). Mrs. Smith had good reason to behave strangely. While a young girl, she had been accused of murdering her parents with an axe. Because of the testimony of a faithful servant, Goudie MacIntyre (Peggy Lou Nuckols), she was acquitted. TRAGEDY VERSUS However, her past was brought into the open by a week-end guest, Sir Hugo Const, a newspaper owner, who had covered the trial. Dr. Ren- dle (Dick Studer), the father of Robert ' s fiancee, and Hugo Const were close friends. Mrs. Smith cleverly convinced the men of her innocence, but the audience sensed the real truth about Mrs. Smith. Suspense is portrayed through the facial expressions of the actors and actresses.
