• • Little did man realize when dedication he first use the log as a primitive means of rolling heavy stones, that he was establishing the first in a long series of evolutionary processes which would in time enable trains and automobiles to fly across rails and highways at speeds far beyond his remotest conception. To those who have preceded us and laid the foundation for all that Twentieth Century man has been able to accomplish, and to those who will follow us, making our lives even richer through the further development of what we have thus far achieved, we of the 1949 POWDER HORN staff proudl dedicate our book.

1949 . • Last year in a decade, last in half a when we should consider past achievements. One is sufficient to see what great progress has been century; a time backward look made in every field of human endeavor. Because we of the 1949 Powder Horn staff are acutely aware of the tremendous advances made in these past years in every facet of our culture, we have tried to bring to light the thing that has been the basic factor in these accomplishments . In progress probably no one invention has had more influence than the wheel. History owes much to this ingenious contrivance, and through it we are to see miraculous advancement in the future. In choosing the evolution of the wheel as our central theme, we have tried to catch some of the spirit of this progress.
