LT M L Crow Ship Control Officer Boatswain Mates, Quartermasters, Signalmen and Radiomen comprise the Ship Control Department. The Radiomen are the voice of the command providing rapid, reliable and secure communications. Processing up to 300 messages a day they are the ship ' s link with the rest of the world. Signalmen handle the tactical communica- tions between Navy units by employing more traditional means such as Flaghoist, Flashing Light and Semaphore. Quartermasters take great pride in determining the ship ' s position and maintaining a navigational track using all available means from state of the art satellite systems to bearings taken from the sun and stars. The most traditional of all ratings, the Boatswain ' s Mates or Bos ' n ' s , operate the ship ' s motor whaleboat, anchor and underway replenishment gear as well as performing preservation of the ship ' s hull and interior spaces. 27
