SKCS (SW) D.K. Smith Senior Chief Of The Command As the senior enlisted member onboard Senior Chief Smith functions as the enlisted men ' s representative to the Commanding Officer, as well as advisor to the crew on command policy. He was irrefutably the " voice ' ' of the Bluejacket onboard GEORGE PHILIP.

LCDR M.G. Mathis EXECUTIVE OFFICER Serving as the CO ' s right hand man, the XO handles most of the command ' s administrative work as well as functioning as the personnel manager. This unbur- dens the Captain so he may carry out the important task of commanding the ship. The XO will undoubtedly be remembered by most for his uncanny talent for finding dust in all those " He ' ll never look there ' ' places.

" We few, We happy few, We band of brothers. " William Shakespeare " WESTPAC " is an inevitable part of all Pacific Fleet sailors ' careers. Some associate the deployment with visits to exotic ports while others think of it in terms of family separation and the long hard hours of work it implies. For the men of GEORGE PHILIP this Westpac held at least one universal theme; it would possibly be the ship ' s last. (The GEORGE PHILIP will augment the Naval Reserve Force in January 198t ). On the morning of August 28, 1984 the crew slipped the last mooring line, blew a sigh of nervous anticipation and embarked on what proved to be an unforgetable adventure. This cruisebook is dedi- cated to the memories and spirit of USS GEORGE PHILIP ' s WESTPAC 84-85. In the years to come we hope it will invoke the warm memories we all shared during our adventure.
