Beyond is a chasm of emp- tiness, limitless possibilities to lose ourselves in dreams. Yet, behind these hopeful spaces to create, one feels the pressure. And how does one cope with the burdens which are placed upon us, the responsibili- ty of living for ourselves, making our own decisions. At this time there is no other way to exist than to live with style. Style, a word which more than any other characterizes the senior class of 1983. The flagrant air of self-assurance, the brightened smiles, the almost fren- zied search for fulfillment, laughter, enjoyment, and most importantly the faithful friendships and the dreams. Who knows what lies behind this stylish facade who knows what lies. In the meantime let us feel this freedom and dream. Tomorrow we will be but echoes here. And while we stand On this edifice of fear of life of dreams to come Can we not join hands For this crystal moment May we not weep together Or smile through our tears Ten years from now we'll Not have this diamond to share But we will have this memory .. . Another sophomore class, not very much unlike those that have already ‘passed’ through this school. There is little to distinguish us from our predecessors: we hold the same title, have the same label, as other sophomore classes and will undoubtedly become equally as anonymous. This is not to say that there is no potential, simply that the personalities that will crystalize in adulthood are just beginning to emerge from the restrictions of conformity. Ultimately, it is the individuals who will be remembered and not the class itself. The sophomore year is one of transition and discovery, a ‘lost’ period sustaining neither the novelty of the freshman year nor the anticipation of the senior but is floating somewhere in between. There was once a brick wall, quite a nice wall as walls go. And, as often happens, Chris Behr the brick wall was made up of bricks, several thousand bricks, in fact, all rect- Chris Buddendeck angular in their inordinate orderliness. In the same place, at the same time, there Tuan Chau existed a flock of birds. all grey and white, in migration. Astounding. Beside a pallid beach on a languid day the birds came upon the wall, and, seeing it, dived for rest and sanctitude. They sat quietly in their apparent sameness watching the inevitable ebb and flow of the tide. Then humans came along, not noticing the birds at all, and decided to destroy the wall, constructively, of course. The birds, being singularly amused, stayed to watch, unaware that they were laughing at themselves. The men rolled right over it, demolished it to a pile of nameless rubble, but then it never had a name anyway. The bricks, not knowing emancipation, lay around uselessly, decaying. The birds, being more astute, recognized freedom, seized it, and flew away. Preshman i? PY ares: The Freshman class is still thought of as rookies, newcomers, and little peo- ple by the rest of the Senior High despite the fact that they have been at George Mason for three long years already. The Freshman class is also the smallest class in the school, but this year they were a most the loudest because they almost won the Spirit Stick. The class of ’86 contains a lot of talented peo- ple: dancers, singers, pianists, and actors, as well as a wide assortment of jocks: JV Boy’s and Girl’s Soccer players, JV Boy’s and Girl's Basketball players, a Girl’s Varsity Soccer player, a Girl’s Varsity Basketball player, and two JV Cheerleaders. So, this little class of little people has made a big reputa- tion for themselves in this school. Klass (coach) 104 il me This year at George Mason, the faculty worked hard as ever. English teachers developed some new studies to enrich students’ learning, the math department expanded to include computers. For advanced learning, outstanding teachers in- structed IB (International Baccalaureate) courses in History, English, Biology, and Anthropology. Our 1982-83 school year would not have been the same without the diligent work of our faculty and administration- both during school, and after school in which they engaged themselves in extracurricular activities. For without them, we students would have had no clubs or sports, not to mention the enriched learning we receive to better ourselves for the future. A team effort, this album is very representative of the active (if not overly busy) lives of these people, recorded this year as a memento for years to come. This documentation was hammered together, squeezed out of the time and energy of the students who took the pictures and organized and designed each section. It is what could be done with good intentions, circumstance and deadlines. Yet, it is more than a job done behind us — it is a visible record for you to consider despite any qualifications — tohold fast some memory of this time, this year. Mr. J. Ballou Sponsor Mr. John Ballou — Photography i Erika Biesel, Editor-in-Chief, Activities (Entertain- Marian Eide, (middle) Seniors (Style) ment) , Introduction, Ads A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: This year has been very hard work for many of us on the yearbook staff. Upcoming deadlines kept us all busy — running around searching for just the right photos to fit in the pages, making up captions caused us all to scream sometime or another, and nearing the final deadline when adding the finishing touches, a few of us almost gave up all hope of completing this book. As editor | am happy to express my joy in not only working on and finishing the book, but also realizing that the members had at least 10 different activities going on at the same time, they managed to do their best (which was quite good in my opinion) with no previous expe rience. No, we did not meet every deadline (because of conflicting schedules) , but | would like to say for everyone that we are quite proud of our efforts. | would also like to express my sincere thanks to John Ballou for his undying help in compiling the book. This yearbook would not exist without him.
