MELANIE KREKEL (Nov. 8, 1962-Nov. 10, 1979) Class of 1980 Melanie Remembered .. . Death is a subject most of us are protected trom. Throughout our lives we are sheltered from death due to its shock, pain and hard-to-face realism. Since we are protected from this subject, death. we often avoid or ignore it in conversation and are virtually unprepared for death's harshness. Death, as well as life. prevails with a purpose. Each time the darkness strikes, the impact is different. By arousing ourselves to the significance of death we are more likely to come in touch with the reality of life and more appreciative of our own existence Melanie Krekel had a lot to give to others. During her lifetime Melanie relayed to her family and friends a constant optimism for life and a genuine concern and love for people. These qualities enabled her relationships to endure and flourish Mel's radiant smile and consistently bright eyes were never unappreciated. She had the gift of compassion. Throughout her illness Melanie remained involved, interested and concerned about her family, friends, church, and school. She was always grateful for the love and care she received from the hospital staff, family members, and visitors. The efforts of many were never dismissed without a “‘thank you’’ and a glowing smile. Her continuous optimism, courage and inner strength in the face of frustrating weakness, inescapable fear and excruciating pain will live with us as reminders of a truly unforgettable human being and a loving friend.
