The week before Homecoming is traditionally a prelude to “THE BIG GAME!” On Monday, Cheerleaders passed out nints and yarn, Tuesday was red and white day. On Wednesday, signs read “Be Original: Dress like your best friend,” so qultiple pairs of identical twins blessed the hallways. Thursday was the magic day when people received carnations from their friends and lover s. Mustangs went “overall” nuts and wore their favorite hats. Girls were planning for weeks in advance for Friday, which was Jersey Day. To observe this school’s team spirit is a wonder. Many say that a school this size cannot have the spirit necessary to support any kind of team. This seems not to ring quite true, anyone who had been at the Homecoming game this year would have noticed that win or lose, our team was the important thing to us. This school supports many teams, but none with the excitement and enthusiasm of G.M. football. At halftime, though, while we were all moaning our team’s slight losing streak, we were all entertained by some of the schools prettiest girls and their escorts — The Homecoming Court. Couples, dressed in their finest, started showing up at about 9:00 to begin the memorable evening. The candlelit cafete- ria took on a romantic glow as the couples sailed out onto the floor. “Skyline,” the last minute band, proved to be a very pleasant surprise. They played a wide variety of slow songs, danceable disco and wild rock ‘n’ roll. All in all, The Home- coming of 1979 was one that graduating seniors will recall for many years. SENIORS 18 YUCH!! 21 MELANIE KREKEL (Nov. 8, 1962-Nov. 10, 1979) Class of 1980 Melanie Remembered .. . Death is a subject most of us are protected trom. Throughout our lives we are sheltered from death due to its shock, pain and hard-to-face realism. Since we are protected from this subject, death. we often avoid or ignore it in conversation and are virtually unprepared for death's harshness. Death, as well as life. prevails with a purpose. Each time the darkness strikes, the impact is different. By arousing ourselves to the significance of death we are more likely to come in touch with the reality of life and more appreciative of our own existence Melanie Krekel had a lot to give to others. During her lifetime Melanie relayed to her family and friends a constant optimism for life and a genuine concern and love for people. These qualities enabled her relationships to endure and flourish Mel's radiant smile and consistently bright eyes were never unappreciated. She had the gift of compassion. Throughout her illness Melanie remained involved, interested and concerned about her family, friends, church, and school. She was always grateful for the love and care she received from the hospital staff, family members, and visitors. The efforts of many were never dismissed without a “‘thank you’’ and a glowing smile. Her continuous optimism, courage and inner strength in the face of frustrating weakness, inescapable fear and excruciating pain will live with us as reminders of a truly unforgettable human being and a loving friend. SCC ’ 132 The SCC trip to Camp Shiloh was a retreat in the truest sense of the word; a retreat from school, but not from learning, a retreat ftom high school but not from school friends. What was accomplished at Shiloh cannot be achieved anywhere else for the simple reason that you cannot copy the atmosphere of he Virginia mountains in a classroom or meeting hall. The weekend, perhaps more than in past years, had an easy air of cooperation and cohesiveness about it. In between meetings — pn topics which ranged from parliamentary procedure to human relations — hiding and scaring the hell out of people seemed to be the overriding favorite activity. The skits brought out some bizarre and often hilarious talents. The word game contest bordered on poscene; the volleyball games crossed that border. The highlights of the weekend, though, came at the very beginning and end of each day. The first thing in the morning who could help but snicker uncontrollably at how everyone looked minutes after they'd gotten out of bed. The real highlight, though, came in late evening when the stars were so bright, the air so crisp, the mood so relaxed, that for a few hours we could accept each other as people not as competing students. If for no other reason than this new feeling of acceptance, the weekend was invaluable. Reprinted from Lasso 134 its ry ; A, . = 2 . 136 While walking down the hallway Glancing at my friends, Dust hovers above my head. I can't see a thing. I ask “What?!” of my teacher Too many times. The banging and pounding and sawing is so loud. I can't hear a thing. But what is this for? all that money I guess it will be To benefit us all.
