I remember making up all the books that I wrote book reports on for a whole quarter. I remember Mrs. Costa making me learn to tango — with a girl. I remember everyone being checked for lice. R-1-1-1-1-p. . . Crunch! Huge green and yellow creatures are tearing away at the landscape. Nothing standing in their path stands in their way. Towering trees and gree grass are but memories. Substituting for them are mutilations and excavations. What are these destructive monsters? Aliens from outerspace? No, not quite. A more accurate description would be the I-66 savages: massive bulldozers and plowing equipment with orders to eat everyting in sight. Is 1-66 really necessary, or is it just catering to the desires of the highway lobby? | can see I-66 as a means of a faster transportation route, a shortening of traveling distance, and even an attempt at unconglomerating traffic, but how many lives do you suppose this thoroughfare will claim? How much more noise pollution will fill our school? How much more air pollution will fill our lungs? It’s hard enough to cross Route 7 as it is now; I don’t suppose it'll be much easier when we can't even see the other side because of traffic and smog. What about that big house on top of the hill near the construction (or is destruction a better term)? Yes, you know the one I’m talking about. The house that could not be seen until its front yard was leveled. Every time I pass by, I feel as though I’m invading the privacy of those within. Who put the contract on Mother Nature anyway? As most Sophomores remember, almost every English class prior to the testing day was used for taking and examining sample tests similar to the actual Competencies. We all dreaded those sample tests because they were even more work than the actual tests. When the tests were finally given, Sophomores discovered that they were easy after all. Although a small number of Sophomores failed, most people scored reasonably high. Enjoy your summer vacation because it’s not over. We'll be taking History Competen- cies next fall! It reminded me of someone I knew, beautiful, but nothing to it. ksa SILENCE SILENCE IS A PIECE OF TIME, MADE TO STAND A LITTLE LONGER THAN THE REST. hn THE HISTORY OF GEORGE MASON JUNIOR SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Even as early as 1939, citizens of Falls Church were wondering why they continued to send their teenagers to crowded, expensive, Fairfax County high schools. At the time, 93% of the high school students residing in Falls Church attended Falls Church High School in Fairfax County. Unlike county residents, Falls Church students had to pay a tuition and were not given free busing. By 1945, most citizens were ready to support a new high school, but the City Council sur- prised everyone when they decided to purchase Oak Street (Now called Thomas Jefferson) school from Fairfax County. When Oak Street school wa s opened to city residents in 1949, citi- zens again asked for a high school. In the fall of 1951, Falls Church residents of high school age attended the temporary build- ings at Jefferson school and at Seven Corners. In the fall of 1952, the new school (our pres- ent building) was opened. The building was named in honor of George Mason, the author of the Virginia Bill of Rights. Our school has changed a good deal since then, with additions to the building in 1953, 1956, 1962, 1969, and in 1973. The faculty has changed, as have styles, music and fads, but it is still true that George Mason is one of the most unique high schools around. da 1AM EQUAL Don't look down to see me, for | am not inferior; Don’t look up to see me, for lam not superior. But like a bolt of thunder The Mustangs Have Prevailed! The Handley Judges were not consistent The Osbourn Eagles were not persistent The Broad Run Spartans also failed, Leaving proof that the Mustangs. have prevailed! The Yellow Jackets were depleted, The L.C. Raiders were kindly seated And as the competion trailed, It was shown that the Mustangs, have prevailed! The Eagles of Clarke County, died a death of pain, While the Loudoun Valley Vikings, were similarly slain And so as each opponent, was devastatingly nailed, There seemed but little doubt, that the Mustangs have prevailed! The Warren County Wild Cats, didn’t live to see the light, While the troubled Park View Patnots, could not survive the fight And so the train of victory, for nine teams had derailed, Leaving the clearly overwhelming fact: THE MUSTANGS HAVE PREVAILED!!! 102 GIRLS SOCCER we, = ie 2% ar x — “« 4 Wate. teed We et SS eae we - - “dl , ‘ ,. Early in the season, the Mustangs were referred to as “the door- mats” of the district. Soon after that statement was made, the Mustangs started out their first winning season in many years by defeating Loundon County 34-0. The Mustangs went on to stomp Warren County on their home field. That was the first time in eight years that feat had been accomplished. After more wins, the Mustangs faced their toughest challenge, Clarke County. Clarke was in a three way tie for first place. When the Mustangs beat Clarke 14-0, there was much celebrating, and we were no longer “doormats.”” We were the MIGHTY MUS- TANGS!!! 1978 Season Record: 5-4-] Top left: Head Coach “— right: Coach Tack Gambill an Strickland Bottom left: Coach Bottom right: Coach John Lund Dudley McDonald 115 SENIORS Sitting: Stuart Walden, Wally Costner, Phil Kimble, Jim Daughtry, Tim Lyberger, Derek Thomas, Danny Owen. Cheerleaders were organ- ized into an A-squad and two B-squads. lhe A-squad supported the Fall and Win- ter sports, and placed second in the Dis- trict Cheerleading Tournament. The B- squads cheered for girls and boys basket- ball, cross country, football, swimming, and wrestling. The new program was experimental, and the results produced a variety of opinions. Such was the case of George Mason’s Homecoming °78, as hopes grew, pressure increased, and unique events made spirits rise. Starting the week with mint and yarn day gave individuals a chance to show their spirit by wearing a red ring of yarn on their finger and enjoying the cool taste of a mint — which was, of course, red and white. Other events, such as the pie- eating contest and slave day entertained people and contin- ued to remind them of the coming main event. The pie-eating contest proved interesting with gluttonous faces coated by the debris of glorious victory. Slave day found a select few very comfortable with their auctioned-off merchandise. Cheerlead- ers make very engaging slaves. Finally Friday night came — time to light the unextingui- shible fire that would later prove all powerful. The night Started with an enjoyable pops concert and continued with the cheerleaders leading everyone out to the bonfire to see the dummies, symbols of our opponents, thrown into the unfor- giving furnace. (cont.) 141 wor. a? ae 1S wo t Bev , 47% - [. a = TSyaany 4 _ : — C.C.C. RETREAT lhis year, the S.C.C. retreat was a big success. We achieved all of our Objectives: leadership training; examining school problems: learning parliamentary procedures; and developing positive rela- tionships between S.C.C. members. When not working, there was an abundance of activities. Foot- ball for example, kept many participants out of trouble, as did vol- leyball and soccer. As the first day of this three day retreat came to an end, many of us retired to a cozy bright and warming campfire, filling the night air with a variety of songs and tingling ghost stories. Others, a bit more restless, engaged in night escapades. The following day, after an S.C.C. meeting, some students went on a long mountain hike. Amidst the wilderness, we stumbled upon - a i , °.¢ The Spitini Brothers! Mea-tae-um-la-gamos” 144 an extensive vine, and took to the air with Tarzan-like swings. Meanwhile, a few girls gathered up enough courage to take a dip In a nearby icy river. Boys will be boys, however, and unknown to the girls at the time, a few of these gentlemen had wandering eyes. By nightfall, the entertainment commenced with an apple bobbing contest! Afterwards, we all adjourned to the campfire where we held our version of the Gong Show. Among the acts were a side-splitting spitting skit, the Evolution of Man, a la Oral Roberts, and the winning skit [he Fabulous Spittini Brothers. To conclude this last night, many students slept under the stars near the blazing fire; a nights sleep well needed for the long trip home. om ° | ‘ a i rh A = RE erage au _ 173 “Swing Low Sweet Chariot Barb's kicked out again!
