Main Off. h 254 252 7 This is my Halloween mask!” Tranquility” 8 This year marks two occasions for us here at George Mason; it is the Bicentennial of our nation , and it is also the Twenty-fifth Anni- versary of our school. For these two reasons , we tend to look back at yesterday, because the present is the product of the time spent in the past. And we, the 1976 Mustang staff, hope to provide a memo- rable record of this celebrated year. Time; what is it? It seems that we spend so much of it in this building going to school. To what purpose? We spend our time absorbing what is going on around us. We made friends when we first entered this building, but after spending six years with the same friends, we part after graduation, going in our own directions. Yet, we always have the memories of the times we spent together in the past. Here we learn to make judgements, and, by making judgements, we mold ourselves for what we are going to become in the future. For yesterday is today’s past, and today will be tomorrow’s pasc. And by what we learn and feel in these passing days, we prepare ourselves for another step in life. So then, this is to remember . . . The practices were long and hard , but when the first game came along, those long hot practices paid off with a 28-0 win over Bishop Ireton, who had beaten the Mustangs last year 9-0. Despite the many injuries ranging from minor bruises to broken bones , the Mustangs were able to bring about a 6-4 season and return the lost respect of our football prowess to George Mason. This year’s Freshman Football team was full of great expectations, much enthusiasm, and lots of talent . Though the season did not turn out the way it was hoped, the enthusiasm proved to be of major importance as the Mustangs won the first GM RECORD OPP home game in over ten years by beating Leary 35- 14 Loudoun Valley 30 0. Looking at the record, the season doesn ' t seem Chantilly B Rained Out like a success, but if young athletes like those of 14 DeMatha 14 this year’s season keep coming out, the Mustangs 0 Clarke County 14 should surely have a winning season in the near 0 Broad Run 8 future . 0 Handley 14 16 Loudoun County 41 15 VARSITY SOCCER Front Row: Jeff Marsh, Paul Clinton, Dan DeLong, Phil Lundy, Peter Wollenburg, Kavan Joburi. As always, the team was crippled by having a small squad with few substitutes. Although the team was small and inexperienced, the help of Mike McCormack on the front line and Billy Kil- liam in the heart of the defense, gave every team a run for the money. Although having a rough year, four players were picked for the All Northern Virginia Soccer team. They were - 1st team: Captain, Billy Killiam, and Mike McCormack , leading goal scorer for the Mustangs; 2nd team: first year rookie goalie, Richard Amacher, and the other team captain, Sam Jordan, at fullback. Inexperience was the major difficulty that the Mustangs faced. Being up against the more experienced Triple A, Arlington league proved to give them the needed experience for the coming seasons . Next year there will not be a fall soccer season. It is being changed to a spring season and we will join a new league with Fairfax County. Huh? In a repeat of last year, the girls’ varsity basket- ball team suffered a disappointing loss to Loudoun County in the district tournament and finished in second place for the season. The season saw continual improvement of all players, with an especially strong contingent of juniors seeing action. Several freshmen made the team and showed promise as future starters . The team, coache d by Mrs. Bradd, found an increasing number of spectators in attendance at the games. The team’s overall record was 8-7. Kari Gathercoal and Cindy Holcomb were among those players elected to the All-District Girls’ Varsity Basketball team. 23 GIRLS’ J. V. It was a new and challenging sea- son for all those involved. The J.V. team, coached by Mrs. Bradd, had a tough first year, playing against the bigger and more experienced girls in the district . Having a Junior Varsity team for the girls allowed those with interest and ability to prepare for future play on the Varsity squad . 25 Scott Abbott - You ' ve come a long way, baby! Although the record doesn ' t tell it all, the 1975 Cross-Country team showed marked improvement. ID ii The team was small and had many first year par- ticipants. Under supervision of Coach Klass, indi- vidual achievement was the standard for the team, with all runners improving their times steadily throughout the season . In the estimation of Tim Kinkead, captain of the team, the high point of the year was the second meet against Loudoun County , when the Mustangs , despite being handicapped with the loss of two top runners, were able to defeat the Raiders. The Committee started working back in the Spring of ' 75, preparing work and arranging fund raising activities. The week was filled with excitement, spirit, a pop concert, sporting events, pep rallies and, of course, last minute preparations, leading to pure exhaustion by the time of the Saturday festivities. The traditional half-time activities were changed to pre-game ceremonies, including the presenta- tion of the 1975 Homecoming court. The Home- coming Committee elected to include a prince from each of the classes this year. After a disappointing game, the mad rush began for those going to the dance. The highlight of the evening was Jack Gambill crowning the 1975 Homecoming Queen, Becky Butchert. The 1975 Homecoming Court was: Freshman Prin- cess Rachel Miller, Prince Jim Daughtry: Sopho- more Princess Kathy Hudnall, Prince Bill Shafer: Junior Princess Joan Clinton, Prince David Martin; Senior Princesses Mary Lynn Scott, Cathy Lynch, and Kathy Dolan, Senior Princes Norby Strub, Tom Mailloux, and Alan Veatch; Queen Becky Butchert and King Chas Hunter. 43 Queen Becky Butchert and King Chas Hunter at the scene Honorary Princess, Ingse Wiese, and Prince Walter Francini. Mr 93 CANDIDS 94 STUDENTS 95 96 Pamelas. Anderson Gregg Robert Alexander The halls are home to you and each room carries a special significance. Going anywhere, from the language wing to the gym, from the shop to the office (where many have donated their share of time), one sees the faces of friends and acquain- tances of varying fondness, who form the memories of each day. It has become a way of life, a normal occurrence, and yet it ' s soon to conclude, never to be recaptured . Graduates will sever habit and habitat, and the halls will stop being a domicile for your extended family. The faces you pass on the street won’t be the faces of the friends you left behind, but the faces of people you have yet to meet. Each step you take will be a new challenge, an obstacle course for you to surmount. And yet, we all eagerly await gradua- tion, and the unknown. «V • Patricia D. Bailey Christian Allan R. This year George Mason ' s AFS Club hosted its first short exchange trip. Over forty students and spon- sors came from Concord, Massachusetts. After a long and tiring bus ride , they arrived at G . M . on a Thursday evening . The students from Concord visited our school and classes on Friday. They toured Washington on Fri- day and Saturday, and some even made it into Georgetown. Many attended the school play and the Carnival. Sunday was a trip to the National Zoo or back into D.C. to see some more of our famous sites. Then on Monday morning, they prepared them- selves to return home. Last minute pictures were taken to remember the occasion. Addresses were exchanged in the hope that new friendships would be continued. Then came, of course, the unwanted good-byes. As the bus pulled away from the school, we real- ized that those last few days were ones we would all remember. 128 SOPHOMORES 129 Matthew Abbott Mary Acosta i Robert Adams Claire Bailey Sandra Bailey Bill Bailey Carla Barr Jeff Bartlett Susan Beach Bonnie Beaman Debra Bess Kim Bodden Kelvin Bost Bea Bresnahan Caroline Brown Desiree Brown Scott Brown Tammy Bryant 130 Robert Bullock Darold Burdick John Byrge Russ Carter Bob Cash John Cash Margaret Cesnik Vernon Chase Tommy Chew Janice Christian June Comley Ken Cornell Thannguyet Dang Gary Davis Alison DeLong Skip Dolan Ann Downer Lucia Engel 131 Brian Evans Brad Felker Mike Fletcher Robert Foster Bill Frye William Gathercoal Darla Geoffroy Paul Gibbons Becky Golding James Grant Warren Greenleaf Kevin Grim Caroline Harding James Harris Carl Hauser Susan Hayes Nona Herbert Sue Herman 132 Tim Hockenberry Keith Hodson Kenneth Honesty Dorothy Houck Kathy Hudnall Patty Hughes Douglas Jackson John Kamis Judy Keating Lisa Kemp Norma Kinser Libby Lanouette Kerry Lee David Legarreta James Lloyd Betsy Lumsden Carolyn McCarthy Elizabeth McGalem 133 John Mele Keven Mellema Scott Midkiff Davis Miers Irene Minton Tim Money David Montgomery Maggie Moore Brett Morrison Wendy Mueller Kenneth Murphy David Niel Jim O’ Dowd Laura O’Keefe Paul Pak Ken Palmes Howard Parnell Cam Peacock Picture Not Available 134 Mark Pelletier Eric Peyton Jay Phillipsen Tracy Phillips Ginger Phillips Vicky Pickeral Cynthia Porter Eddie Pyles Keri Rambo i Susan Richbourg Rebecca Riggs Scott Rodgers John Rozzelle Denzel Rose Doug Rutherford Marty Sansalone Heide Scheiter Lex Schul 135 Anne Schwind Bill Shafer Cheryl Shifflett Tony Shipman Kevin Simms Lucy Smartt Patti Smith Dylan Starratt Darcie Stein James Strain Michael Sullivan Tom Summerhill Phyllis Tenney Laura Toone Picture Not Available Thomas Transue Donna Troy James Tucker Donna Underwood 136 Theresa Vincent David Volz Chris Warner Victor Waters ' Joseph Weik Lori Weintz Frank White Daisy Whorton Nicole Willner Selena Wilson Todd Wilson H7 FRESHMEN 138 139 I’m cool!
