The reader will not find any philosophical quotes, ambiguous photographs, or meaningless captions. Instead, Mustang ' 74 will capture current events, events that sparked interest and controversy. After all, we are living in a transitional period. We all want to remember some of the incredible things that happened. Primarily, Mustang ' 74 is a piece of social history. The students, faculty, and community have all played important roles, and their roles will be included. For certain. Mustang ' 74 is a change. I hope you enjoy it. The Mustangs enjoyed a successful season. Under Coach Lund ' s guiding hand, the team finished with a 7-4 dual meet record. The seven wins included a victory over Brentsville, the Class A state champion, and 4 wins and no losses in the district meets. George Mason proved to be a good tournament team when they finished fourth in the Region II tournament and then came on strong to tie for second in the state. The team came out with two state champions: Alan Shick at 138 lbs. and Brian Schwind at 145 lbs., a second place finisher, Steve Miller at 126 lbs., a third place finisher, Charlie Boaz at 132 lbs., and a fourth place finisher, Kevin Champion at 1 05 lbs. All in all the team showed greater balance in all weight classes except for the heavyweight class where the team had no participant. With a heavyweight and a little more depth the team could have finished with a 9-2 record. The seniors this year in order of weight class are: Steve Miller, Charlie Boaz, Brian Schwind, and Curtis Hall. 35 — p i JV WRESTLING: FRONT; Thomas Ellis, Victor Waters, Simon Brown, Joe Sanford. THE SAGA OF ' 73-74 The Spirits were up, and the hopes were high. As the Mustangs gave basketball yet another try. Said the players, " This is the year, and that ain ' t no jive, " " Four starters over 6-3, and a guard who hits from 25. " The team seemed well drilled when the first game came ' round. But the players all thought it was still the playground. Moaned Spiro, " They can all fire from thirty, " " But on defense, they ' re afraid to get their hands dirty. " The season wore on, and time and again. The Mustangs scored 75, and still lost by ten. They should have played team ball, as they were tall and slow. Instead, each player said, " Give me the ball; see my show. " But there were some bright moments to shine through the tears, The Mustangs beat O ' Connell; first time in four years. And there were some good players, though it may not have seemed, ] Both Dennis Tracz and Jon Crone made the All-District team. But alas, in the end, the season didn ' t turn out fine, The Mustangs lost twelve, and won only nine. Things look worse for next year, with only one player coming back, Oh well; at least they should all be in good shape for track. 39 J.V. Basketball, left to right. Steven Hill A.S., Indiana University, B.S., East Tenn. State University. Industrial Arts. A stroll down the halls of the Vocational Wing is an adventure in varied " sounds of learning. " In the Drafting Department you are greeted by the sound of the latest album. The music is background for students in this three-year program who are busily tapping their T-squares down on " plans " of the future. The clicking of typewriters further down the hall drowns out the music. In the Steno room quietness prevails; pens are swiftly gliding across steno pads as girls intently take dictation. Next door in the Clerk-Typist lab a girl operates a duplicating machine, others are typing, a few are rapidly tapping the keys of adding machines, and some are flipping file cards in alphabetical order. Across the hall the sound of typewriters diminishes as the tapping of the computer printer and hammering of the 402 takes you into the computer age of punched cards, programs, control panel wiring (spaghetti boards " as the students say), and the usual complaint, " Not enough computer time. " These Business students are in a two-year vocational program preparing themselves for office jobs. Downstairs you are introduced to two other three-year programs — Printing and Electronics. First you find yourself in a print shop bustling with activity — the rhythmic swish-clock of the presses as they suck up the sheet of paper and impress the message on each, the sudden flashing on and off of intense light at the cameras and platemaking machines, people who are " stripping " or composing, oblivious to the lights flashing and noises around them, quietly doing their own thing. The smell of ink and other chemicals is in the air. The flurry of activities indicates there ' s no time for visitors; you leave the spacious shop and move down the hall to the quieter, but no less active, atmosphere of the Electronics lab. You go unnoticed by students leaning over meters, analyzing, testing, and studying the picture on a TV screen — all a part of learning a trade. Not wanting to disturb them, you go back up the stairs. As you go toward the gym, the smell of spicy food being prepared in the cooking lab greets you; you envy the lucky students enrolled in Home Economics courses who are learning useful skills such as cooking, sewing, and decorating. Vocational Education as you have just viewed it is education for employment. Ideally, however, it is the cooperative effort of vocational and academic teachers to mold well-rounded students who will shape our future society. 71 Nancy DePasquale B.A., Shepherd College; Librarian. Some Middle School students participate in high school Algebra I classes, and two are enrolled in a Geometry class. Ninth grade students are enrolled in Survey or Fundamentals of Mathematics or in Algebra I. Other course offerings are Practical Mathematics for juniors and seniors, Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry- Algebra III (one semester each) as well as accelerated courses in Geometry, Intermediate Mathematics, Functions and Calculus. Any student who wishes to study mathematics independently at his own rate of speed may so do under contract with one teacher who has time set aside for working with contract students. The Algebra II students under contract are following packets designed for experimental use with one class last year. Our Math Team participates in Math Meets with the Fairfax County Inter-High Mathematics League. 74 Chester S. A bit o ' cockney creeped into the halls as several students in Mrs. Butterfield ' s " Oh to be in England " thematic English class began preparation for their trip to London. Shorter in distance, but no less searching in its intent, were the continuing field trips to theatres in Mrs. Rodin ' s film course. All departments ' field trips felt the pinch of the energy crisis as the year wore on. Self evaluation was the keynote, as always, in the department, with a strengthening of the composition requirements and the introduction of the quarter credit system for all courses. A strong thematic program maintained its provocative themes, with students finding themselves more involved than ever in such intensive concepts as the process of learning, freedom and justice, techniques of acting, and the Russian soul. Supplementing these many themes were power reading courses and in-depth basic reading skills courses. Rounding out the English program were such stalwarts as the contractual learning program and Mrs. Stuckey ' s perpetual falsetto cry, " Where the devil is my classroom this quarter?! World and U.S. History, Physical Geography, Political Science, Economics, Sociology and Psychology, with some specialization in different aspects of these subjects at the upper grade levels according to individual student interests. During their two years in the Middle School students have four semester units, one each in Physical Geography, World History and U.S. History and a fourth which encompasses some Economics, Political Science and Sociology. At the high school level three required courses are offered in World Regions, U.S. History and Government. Each of these is arranged in nine-week thematic units with students moving to different teachers each quarter. Juniors and seniors may enroll for elective courses in Ancient History, Medieval History, Advanced U.S. History, Advanced European History, Psychology, Advanced Psychology, Economics and Sociology. All Social Studies courses are offered on the quarter-credit and optional pass fail systems. Research skills, individual and group work, an inquiry approach and multi-media materials are emphasized. Special use is made of microfilm and videotape. There is no truth to the rumor that many of these courses are approached from a strong Scottish point of view. 79 Patricia Johnson B.A., M.A., George Washington University.
