This is partly true because school days themselves are an important part of life. Of course, they are also a preparation, just as every part of life is a preparation for the next stage of life, but school days are important for their own sake. Since life is not always exciting or thrilling, it should not be surprising that your life at Westinghouse had some dull moments. What is important is that your life in school has a good many interesting moments and that it teaches us something at every stage. There are some students and teachers whom you did not get to know well and who will be only acquaintances. There are some whom you get to know very well and who will be your permanent friends as long as you live. There were some subjects taught you which made little impression upon you, but some subjects influenced your mind and will be a permanent part of your thinking. Those friendships which were founded here and those subjects which impressed you will help make all of your life worthy of the noblest ideals. Q7 A gs... Hughes, Grade8 VICE PRINCIPALS Midyear marked an administrative change at Westinghouse when Mrs. Helen Faison was appointed principal of Fifth Avenue High School and Mr. William Fisher became vice principal for grades ll-12. After her graduation, Mrs. Faison taught English and served as girls advisor at Fifth Avenue. Eight years ago she came to Westinghouse, first as counselor, then vice principal. Now she has returned as principal to the school where she taught originally. Because of their great pride in Mrs. Faisonls accomplishments, the staff and student body of Westinghouse ex- pressed their affection and appreciation for her in several ways. Perhaps Mr. Fisher best defined Mrs. Faison's special qualities when he told the students assembled to say farewell to her, She is a person for whom you have respect simply because of the person she is. The faces of the audience turned toward center stage as the voices of the Westinghouse Robed Choir rang out melo- dious and clear. At holiday assemblies and the Spring Festival, in area churches and concert halls, the music, narration, and artistic effects of the choir's performances carried a message of pride and tradition. The talents of the choir, the octet, the thirteen members of All City High School Chorus, and most of all Mrs. Birdie Nichols, director, brought new significance to the saying, When love and skill work together expect a masterpiece. Mrs. Katherine Gilbert, advisor, and Rosesharon Sneed, president, guided activities made possible through the contributions of the FTA's national sponsor, the NEA. Club members studied aspects of teaching and received orient- ation for a career in education. A deep appreciation of art and a desire to create were the two characteristics found in members of the Westinghouse Art Club. The club com- posed of over thirty talented students met every Thursday under the sponsorship of Mr. Fred Bis- sel. During the year, the members visited exhibits such as the International. With this thought in mind, the Westinghouse Chapter of the Distribu- tive Education Club of America worked on many interesting pro- jects while learning the fundamentals of advertising, selling, and display. Since DECA is a national organization its members had opportunities to participate in city and state-wide meetings. Under the sponsorship of Mr. Julian Salzman, DECA encouraged junior and senior students to develop their own interests in market- ing and distribution through conventions, contests, and chapter projects. CHESS CLUB Chess was the name of the game but strategy was the key word in every move. Sponsored by Mr. James Klein, the chess team led by Thomas Covington and Elliott Lewis, first and second boards, exhibited skill in competitive play. Annually the Chess Club com- petes in the Allegheny County Inter-Scholastic Chess Com- petition and the Pittsburgh Scholastic Tournament. In the last four years the chess team can boast of capturing first or second place in each of these tournaments. M. Bum. Chess Club. SEATED: E. Lewis, M. Walker, J. Dobbs, T. Covington, K. Under the di- rection of Coach Rudy Musulin, the Bulldogs marched all the way to the championship game. Spirited by the ex- plosive assaults of senior fullback, Mike Weston, and the fleet-footedjaunts of senior halfbacks, Sonny Allen and Willie Anderson, the House rolled over eight teams in the newly combined City League. In their only loss of the season, the Bulldogs competed with honor. For it is defeat rather than victory that is the true test of a champion. Upland Community Club President-Mrs. Mary Fitzpatrick Secretary-Mrs. Olivia Hughes Treasurer-Mrs. Leola Saunders 127 ., .. ' : I Faces and happenings of the past will be reflected in our own individual mifrois. Small triumphs and disappointments wil be remembered for their worth. Our y In at Westinghouse encompassed perha's a great deal of labor, perhaps a great dea of happiness. As we walk forward into the future, we! carry away with us memorable experi- ences. Yet one wonders how dynamic in scope are our mirrors. How much can we see? How vague are the images? We take ajourney of a thousand miles or a lapse of twenty years and we find the answers. Faces may be blurred and specifics mud- dled. Yet the meaning of every experience lives on in our hearts and its imprint re- mains forever within the frames of our mirrors.
