Freshman Class History EPTEMBER fi. 1937, forty-eight boys and girls entered Geneva High School as freshmen. Most of them were rather timid, especially the girls: the boys felt better after "ducking" was over. The first day they looked with envy at the upper classmen and wondered if they would ever be able to act as those mighty Seniors did. But soon the class felt more like full-fledged freshmen and no longer afraid to fight their battles with their superiors. The class soon discovered Iohn Bauman was to be their sponsor. One day he called the class together, telling them the time had come to elect officers. They elected: Marvin Sprunger, presidentg lane Miller, vice-president: Vena Egly, secretary: Donald Windmiller, treasurer: and Robert Shoemaker, re- porter. It was then decided to have a party. The big affair was held at lane Millers home. Games were played, refreshments were served. and a good time was enjoyed by all. Iames and Dorothy Wheeler were then added to the class enrollment: Iames later moving to Kirkland. Forty-nine freshmen are looking forward to three and oneghalf more years as students of the Geneva High School. K- , . --I .b . ' .Y S-I Basketball A-GAIN we turn our thoughts toward basketball-lightly if on the sidelines, seriously if on the squad. The cheer leaders begin to make up new yells to whet the enthusiasm of the students. Night after night during the winter, teams, varsity and second, turn out for practice. They practice shooting baskets, they drill on new plays, and learn the rules thoroughly. Then there are training regulations to be kept carefully. During this time an intensive schedule has been made. Then comes the first game. As they trot out on the floor, possibly in new uniforms. the cheering sections go wild. Another season has begun. To play basketball you need a team a ball and an audience. But the person back of that team telling them where to send the ball and often forgotten by the audience is the coach ALBERT Aousn Tourney N anuary 22 1938 the annual First and Second team tourney was held Geneva being host school to six other schools lefferson Pleasant Mills Mon mouth Monroe Hartford and Kirkland For the second consecutive year the Geneva Cardinals were crowned county champs ln order to win the Cards had to dispose of three hard teams The opening night found the Cardinals and Hartford game the spotlight of the tourney Cards winning 23 to 21 fovertimel In the semi finals Geneva found lots of opposition against a tall and heavy built team Monmouth but they lacked the punch and lost 24 to 22 In the final game the Cards had little trouble downing Kirkland 23 to I9 This team proved to be a good team and were v ry good sports in losing Im mediately after this game the trophy was awarded by the County Superintend ent to Coach Bauman and he presented it to Cards Captain Ornelle Sprunger Hartford defeated Monmouth in the final second team tourney game with the score of 22 to 18 Qovertimel They received the nets as a trophy Pleasant Mills Monmouth Iefferson Bryant Gray Decatur Kirkland Monroe Hartford Berne Scores CHS Opp 58 20 33 31 4419 32 20 34 21 23 28 25 52 5218 I9 31 30 37 GHS Opp Petroleum 39 34 Coldwater O 29 28 First team tourney Geneva Bryant Iefferson Monroe Kirkland Hartford Pleasant Mills Monmouth 54 21 47 23 22 I7 32 36 43 26 22 35 I . .
