Don's ability promptly won him the starting quarter backing job. Don had a tough iob to learn but his ability to learn quickly and the desire to do well soon made him one of the most valuable play ers on the team It will be a long time before the fans forget Don s terrific passes and great generalshup OB MCGUIRE was the only member of this year s team who has played 3 years on the first unit Bob played left half back and safety man previously but his year he was moved to a Iineback s position Bob who was captain this year was among one of the best defensive players that Geneva has ever had His fighting spirit will be remembered by everyone RVIN TILLER a sly little guard was handicapped because he was not able to participate in football until his lumor year However his determination and ability to learn quickly soon made Irv one of the best guards on the team Irvin played almost entirely on defense but his hard tackles made many a ball player realize that they couldn t go through him Irvm ended his playing days this past season but his determination will be remembered for a long time IKE PASQUALONE known as Pasqualn to his teammates played a guard position for thus year s Eagles Although he was outweighed by almost everyone he played against his fight and determination more than proved that he could hold has own This was Mike s third year of football and he earned his second varsity football letter Mike s terrific ability will be greatly missed this next year Don Dlglla Wi! Critt, who played both offense and defense proved to be one of the most valuable players on the team. Many experts rated Gary as one of the best all around centers they had seen. Many a sea- son will pass before Critt's crisp blocking and iarring tackles will be forgotten in this area. DICK ANCHOR, the fighting lineman from Harpersfield, ended his playing days at Geneva High this past gridiron season. Dick, who was not too big, played almost entirely on defense, and I am sure that there was many an opposing back- field man who wished that he wasn't playing at all when they came charging through the line. His crushing tackles and fighting ways were tops and will be greatly missed in the com ing gridiron season OGER COMMISSO played left guard on this year s first offensive team His sharp blocking and his ability to be at the right place at the right time proved that he could hold his own against any competition Although this is Roger s last year at G H S he plans to continue his football playing days in college next fall I am sure that in the near future we will be hearing more about his college football feats AY BENDER the rangy senior end proved that he was one of the most capable players on the football team this past fall He caught many a pass which seemed almost impossible to catch On defense Ray s ability to hold up his side of the line proved a very valuable asset The team will miss Ray next sea son His good example and ability were tops 441: .51 gs-'NIJ fig: Ld'-it Gary Crittenden Dick Anchor Y gh, I Roaer Commlsso ROY Bende' 53 . . -vs.. 4 wiv -L -sy - 4 ' I ' ,--in 45 if . J., football OPENING the I95l football season at Memorial field, a light and inexperienced Geneva football team lost their Ist league game in the newly formed Northeastern Ohio Conference, to the Painsville Riverside Beavers. Inexperience proved to be the Eogle's down- fall as they were defeated I9 to 6. On September 2l, a spirited band of Genevans went to Painsville to play the Harvey High Red Raiders. Although for the second week in succession, the Eagles went down to defeat, never- theless, they fought down to the final gun before bowing to the League Champions I9 to 6. The Conneaut Trogans were the conquerors of the Eagles on September 28, by a score of 20 to 7. The lst half ended with the score all tied up at 7 to 7, but in the 2nd half the Trogans' superior weight and experience proved too much for Coach Mallone's boys. For the 3rd week in succession the team from Geneva was de- feated by I3 points. On October 5th the boys bearing the colors of G. H. S. went down to their worst loss of the season 26 to 6. In this game a good many sophomores were given starting roles due to the injuries to several key men, and their inexperience proved fatal. However, this much needed experience should prove to be an important factor in the years to come. Under perfect weather conditions at Memorial Field a determined band of Geneva Eagles hung up their Ist victory of the '5l campaign. Several of the iniured players returned, their presence in the lineup proved iust too much for the Newton Falls iaugernaut. The Scarlet and Gray triumphed over its opponents to the south 32 to 24. Thursday, October I8th, Genevans iourneyed to Weiner Field in Ashtabula to play the Harbor High School Mariners. The eagles were behind I3 to I2 with only 20 seconds to play when Sophomore Dick Arkenburg threw a pass to Tracy Love for a Touch Down, and the warriors from Geneva went on to win I9 to I3. Before acapacity crowd of Homecoming Fans the Eagles went down to defeat for the 5th time in 7 starts. In this game the veteran Mentor squad seemed to have iust too much weight and scoring power, and thus the Eagles were succumbed 26 to 7. On November 2nd playing in the midst of a blizzard and below freezing temperature a determined band of Eagles went down to their 6th defeat at the hands of University School of Cleveland I6 to O. The Eagles seemed to be the better team but the weather conditions and breaks seemed to favor the U. S. boys. Traveling to Cleveland on Saturday, November lOth, the Eagles closed their I95I football season by bow- ing to a fighting bunch of Saints from St. Stanislaus High School 37 to I3. This game marked the end of High School football playing days for 8 seniors on the squad. However, the future looks bright for there will be 25 boys reporting next year from this season's varsity. , - fx 'Mi' 7 . ' Q Q .. " .J-l".....s. ' I ...- - 55 .1 ' Q 5 X .E Q? The folslowing ' 4. Tw week the Ea les ran into rou h sleddin as they ef. Q 9 9 traveled to lgairport to be trounced by the Skippers 57-38. On Dec. 7 a very talented Painesville Harvey team invaded Geneva and baffled the Eagles' defense, taking home a hard fought win by a score of 5l-37. The following night the Geneva basketeers played the Madison Blue Streaks at Madison. Leading all of the way the Eagles succumbed the Blue Streaks 43-38. On Dec. 14 the Eagles lost a heartbreaker to Mentor, losing 56-54 in two overtime periods. This was a tough pill to swallow but the Geneva hoopsters proved that they could take it by beating Conneaut the next night in Conneaut, 58-46. Playing without their star center on the 2lst of December the Eagles lost another close game to Ashtabula Harbor 48-44. Over the Christmas Holidays the Geneva aggregation played in the Willoughby Tourna- ments losing close games both nights. They were defeated by Willoughby in the first game 49-52 and the next night they lost another heartbreaker to Mentor 49-50. The first game the Eagles played after, the Willoughby tournaments was a victory. The boys from Geneva High turned back Painesville Riverside 52-47. The next Friday night, Jan. ll, the Genevans really got revenge by defeating the Harbor High Mariners on their small floor 48-42. The following night Coach Mallone's basketeers extended their winning streak to three by beating a much improved Conneaut Quintet 4l-39. On January I8 the high school basketball team bearing the Scarlet and Gray color played their best game of the season but finally were defeated by a very powerful Fairport team, for the second time 56-53. Friday night January 25, the Eagle Hoopsters traveled to Painesville Harvey High to pla the first game ever played on their new floor. The spark iust didn't seem to be prevalent that night, and the Genevans lost in a contest marked by very poor playing, 39-33. 42 Finally on Feb. lst the Eagles managed to break the Mentor iinx by defedfing the Cardinals on their floor -40. This years' Geneva High basketball team started practically from scratch, with only one man returning from last years' strong quintet. Their desire to win and their ability to learn fast soon made all the teams in the league fear them. To you the members of the basketball team, for your good sportsmanship and desire to win, we of the Aquila staff thank you for making us proud to say that we are from Geneva.
