Contrary to what many may think, the GCHS Marching Bulldog Band does more than perform at halftime during football games. Throughout the year the band competes in marching and concert festivals, participates in several parades, and performs concerts in the winter and spring months proving that band is a year round activity. Two weeks before school starts, all prospective band members spend approximately ten hours a day learning, performing, and perfecting the musical selections and marching drill of a halftime show Before the GCHS band camp begins, the majorettes and drum major attend the band camps held on various college campuses. Practices do not stop with the beginning of school! Tuesday and Thursday nights are devoted to band rehearsals. During this time, the band prepares for marching contests and each Friday night's halftime show. The 1983 GCHS Marching Band, wearing new purple and gold uniforms, marched to the musical selections Coronado , Beat It , I Won't Hold You Back , and a drum solo The Mexican Hat Dance . Excellent ratings were received at the Phenix City Marching Contest and the Troy Marching Contest by the band, majorettes, and drum section. The GCHS colorguard and drum majorette were rated as superior at both contests
