Wnwwliwfnwhf- V Mr. Edward ammers The establishrnent of a new college is never an easy zpaslc. There are many obstacles to :ue surmounted, many pr'ol3l'i:rns to be faced. lt important that college be more than just a building. lt is an ideag and. more than that, it is people dedicated to the idea of building a better world through the use of one of the greatest tools man has, education. Mr. Hammers was such a man. He was dedicated to his professiong and, in his dedication, set an example for us all to follow. Mr. Hammers, who was an associate professor of mathe- matics, was among the hrst members of the faculty to be appointed to G.C.C. in 1967. He accepted his position with enthu- siasm, and worked continuously to establish high academic standards at the new college, We the students of Genesee Community College. would therefore, like to dedicate ihis yearbook to the memoq' of Evl Edward Hanmiers. Those of us who had him as a Math. instruc- tor are aware of the love he had for his field. and we all bene- litted from it. More than this. however, was the fact Kl'l?u. he was a friend to everyone. faculty and student alike. We were all touched by the friendship of this quiet man. Mr. Hammers was a pan of our hfe at G.C.C.. and we shall not forget him. Eut we will miss the man who helped to broaden our horlzons, and taught us to work for the future. 1 TX, ,:..-"" X5 ,ff ff, ,,, M, :"3i,i.zkk , Z' WU HL f G23 h.j5f:::- , 1, .1 V' iv' ' ' 'N , 3" i" A I ' ' frflwgfasvi ?f?111ia fa, I fy? -' 1-ZL4: '- 53, , Q 'mm ' e M I '.r 1 .lffffiif ffj- f gg ' mf L45 iH1m.s,., 4f , I 4,2 4'f'4f,l": --3 ,. , '.','1",mf?f:f'f.11, 'ff 'wqffgr Hgh'-5"'f '-4' f " -11 i f 'ff' ' ' .. It is a very difficult task indeed, to express my sincere respect for you, and also to thank you for the contributions you have made to your college. Two years ago, Genesee Community College had no past - only the promise of a bright future. By your efforts, that promise has become a reality. The College is firmly established in the oommunity and as a unit of the State University of New York. During the past two years you have witnessed the transformation of a commercial building into a functional college campus. You have also been involved in the community's decision to provide a permanent home for Genesee Community College. These developments represent important contribu- tions to the future success of your College. However, a college is more than bricks and mortar, it is in reality the sum and total of tradition which establish the identity of a particular institution. You have established a firm foundation for future generations of students. Now, what of the future? I know that each of you is aware of the fact that ultimately Genesee Community College will be measured in temis of its graduates. If we are successful in placing our career graduates in the future it will be because the members of this class proved their worth on the job. The same can be said for transfer students. If you do well at senior colleges, then these same institutions will welcome graduates from Genesee Community College. Judging by your performances to date, I am confident that your activities in the future will further enhance the reputation of Genesee Community College. Again, congratulations and good fortune to you in the future. It has been a distinct pleasure and honor for me to have known and worked with you. Alfred C. O'Connell President The Academic Dean The commencement exercises of this years graduating class will represent something very special to meg the graduation of students who started at Genesee Community College at the same time I did. It was this group of students who by their interest and enthusiasm for becoming part of the College community, set the pace for future classes. The College's growth and development during these past two years has been nothing short of phenomenal, and the students accomplishments during this period were an integral part of the whole pattern Success seemed to be a part of almost every endeavor the Student Government decided to undertake and the continued growth of the co curricular prdgram clearly attests to the groundwork that this yearis graduating class laid in their first year Success was also earned in the area of academic achievement. They reached the scholastic goals they set for themselves Those same individual characteristics that made this possible will bring future success to those going immediately into the business world as well as to those continuing their education in pursuit of advanced degrees - some with the intention of returning to G.C.C. as part of our instructional To each member of our present student body - but especially to each member of this graduating class - may I extend an invitation to be a part of our fourth annual commencement exercises, which will take place in our new College facility in June. 1972 The College is truly proud of each of you and vie hope that your graduation will not be the end of your relationship with G.C.C but rather the beginning of an on-going alTa1r that will be a mutual source of pride. I sincerely wish each and every one of you a bright and happy future in your chosen fields 21 Sincerely, Stuart Steiner Academic Dean The Dean Of Students As you reach the successful completion of your program at Genesee Community College, I urge you to look back and reflect upon what you have accomplished and upon what you have witnessed. Your most obvious accomplishment is in the academic area. The faculty and stalT share with you a justihable feeling of pride. As a class, you have witnessed the creation of a college. Initially you were observers of this process of development. Quickly, however, you began to participate actively and future generations of students will benefit from your efforts and contributions. The founding of Genesee Community College resulted from the efforts of hundreds of local citizens. Now that you have reached another plateau in your life, I would urge you to consider seriously your obligation to those generations of potential students who will follow you. Locally oriented public higher education is dependent upon the support of every citizen in a particular community. Each of you has the capacity to assume an active roll as community leaders. Through your efforts, colleges will be able to provide for future student generations. I know little in life that can compare with the feeling of satisfaction which one can derive from the knowledge that a job or a task has been done well. Your future will rellect not only your past accomplishments, but more importantly, your continued elTorts. Let me olTer to each of you my sincere wishes for a satisfying future. For the first year the members have been engaged in some fund-raising activities including a Christmas tree sale, two bake sales, and a raflie. During the past year for the benefit of students and faculty, there were four French exhibits displayed for their viewing. Also, Mrs. James Mead, of Oakfield, New York, was a guest speaker who showed her slides of Paris. Last fall, a number of students journeyed to Buffalo State Teachers College to witness Moliere's plays Tartuyjf which was dramatized French and also saw School for Wives at the Studio-Arena theatre in Buffalo. The organization was open to all girls at G.C.C. providing activities such as volleyball, basketball, tennis and bowling. It provided an opportunity for students to get acquainted with students of G.C.C. as well as other colleges. In the fall, a tennis tournament was organized in which we played William Smith College. We didnlt succeed but enjoyed the fun of playing tennis. In basketball a team was chosen and we played at University of Rochester and Roberts Wesleyan played us at Batavia Jr. High. We finished with a 0-2. Going to Fredonia was great fun. We played volleyball against five colleges. We came close to winning, enjoying every minute of playing. During March and April, a bowling tournament has taken place. Fourteen teams are participating which will follow with awards. To finish off our year we plan to have a picnic to get all the girls together for a night of fun. This organization has proven itself to be great fun for all. Their schedule of many community colleges and four-year freshman teams was a formidable one. Although personnel changed somewhat after the first semester, the main-stays of the team remained. Three first-year men: Bob Derek. Dave Dickman, and George Shaver coupled with returning captain Gary Nichols and Charles Cummings carried most of the burden throughout the season. They were assisted by Joe Grzybowski, Dave Spinnegan, John DeBaun and Wil Burdick which made up the squad. John Cianfrini was the manager.
