The gaiety started Saturday afternoon and appealed to the bystanders. Receiving the 1st place award was the Class of 78, and second and third went to the Sophomores and Seniors respectively. After the parade the evening culminated with the Homecoming ceremonies and a Traveller Victory over fayetteville. The Homecoming queen, Cindy Elswick, was crowned by Dr. Ft. S. Birckhead. Her escort was Tim Sinns, "Mr. Traveller." Homecoming celebration continued the following night with a swinging dance where the students "got down." Students flocked into the demo in great numbers and experienced an enjoyable time as they got into the music being played by THE JAMESKIN CORGRIM BAND. After the dance, most of the students continued the evening by meeting at several places. The memories of this weekend will remain in the hearts of many students. The Famous G.B.H.S. marching band trucking down the streets of Gauley Bridge during the Homecoming Parade. k L Jimmy Nottingham comes to the rescue as Henry Newbell is "dumped the Homecoming Game against Fayetteville. While the students were out of school the basketball team had very limited prac- tice. Whlle the ball players were running up and down the floor with their sweat gear on, one could see the vaporcomlng out of their mouths, that's how cold it was. To make things worse, the same night that the ball team lost its first game a pipe in the gym ruptured in three places. The floorywas flooded ang. warped BHGQSQBSMGG to be beyond repair. The Gators Manhandled Gauley to capture the Class Single A football title. Featuring some excellent passing and monsterous linemen, Mannington unraveled the Travellers' dream of the schools first state cham- pionship. Head Coach Mike Morrison later said, "We are 10-2, and nobody can take that away from us." However, the Gators took just about everything else away from Gauley in the form of rushing and passing yardage. Hop Shepherd gave the Traveller fans their only reason for celebration on an 89 yard kick return in the third period. Mannington's line wore the Travellers down while their quarterback went to the air several times for big yardage. ln fact, Huey Zirkle, who completed 9 in 15 was the backup quarterback because of an injury to the Mannington starter. The Travellers lost the game, but they main- tained Gauley Bridge's dignity and the right to be called one of the best in the state and the best in GBHS history. 'O-:J.o' ' Tn pi, W '-fl' iff 'tj lu? JUNIOR VARSITY BEST IN THE COUNTRY it again. With a season record of 3 wins, 1 loss, and 2 ties the Gauley JV had the best mark in Fayette County. With Head Coach Louis Fish and assistants Greg Ballard and Jeff Browning the young Travellers gave their opponents a hard-fought battle until the very end Coach Fish felt very strong about the talent on his squad. As Gauley knocked off their worthy opponents week after winning week, the Travellers earned a lit- tle bit of recognition beyond the area. The Big Red Machine stayed in high gear all year long and carried that momentum throughout the post-season tournaments. The Travellers were led by some outstanding personnel. Don Meadows was the anchor man for Gauley's inside strength. The big six foot six senior scored over 1,000 points, the third Traveller to do so. Guards, Randy Arthur and Mark Grimmett, did an excellent job assisting on numerous scores for Gauley. The senior ballhandlers have kept the Travellers rolling. Alton Dillard and Hop Shepherd provided the much needed spark at the forward positions. These two seniors made plays in crucial situations. ln many games the Travellers' rebounding strength came from Meadows, Dillard, and Grimmett, as the trio crashed the boards constantly. A strong bond of unity tied the talents of this years ball club to produce one of Gauley's best seasons. Gauley's Mark Grimmett goes up and over Valley defender for two pts. GIFlL'S BASKETBALL Travellettes Rebuilding For Future Gauley Bridge's girls basketball team, known as the Travellettes, stumbled through a 2- 12 season record, the worst in their history. However, the Travellettes head coach Marge Madison is optimistic for the following years. "We're rebuilding for the future," com- mented the girls' coach. But she also warned that the next year's team will have to participate more than this year's squad. The Travellettes problems this year also in- cluded inexperience and a lot of youth. Although Madison is not expecting miracles next season, "I do think we can do much better." The Gauley gals' victories came on two wins over Mt. Hope. Under the direction of Mr. James Warren, Gauley Bridge has developed the best band and chorus in the county. The tradition of good quality music has thrived for years. The concert band has continued to be rated one, which is ex- cellent in both county and area band festivals. One of the added features which makes Gauley Bridge rather un- ique is the fantastic jazz band known as "The Swingsters" We are all very thankful to Mr. Warren for his time. effort, and dedica- tion to the music department and students of Gauley Bridge High School. With the seven period schedule we had the opportunity to have two periods allotted for journalism. Much more work was accomplished since there were two complete staffs for the newspaper and the yearbook. The HoofPrints' staff has published several interesting editions this year.
