PACE challenges a a person not only to gather knowledge, but to become a team member because PACE is a team effort. PACE is an academic sport that challenges the mind. It’s a lot like Jeopardy, but the team gets to familiarize themselves with the subject matter (and answers don’t have to be “‘in the form of a question’). This year’s team won the Scott county PACE Tournament and were undefeated country-wide. They finished second in the Wise County Invitational Tournament. Their overall record was 7-2. Brain-power is as important as muscle-power, so next year when PACE season starts, come out and support another Gate City team! 74 BREAKING RECORDS BREAKING THE MOLD Here we are, your humble newspaper staff. (SURPRISE!) We were actually given the privilege of appearing in the Gate City High School Annual. Of course it wouldn’t be complete without us. Although the Out of the Blue news magazine had a rather rough beginning, we are now going ahead full steam and looking for new ways to improve. We’ve sweated, yelled, screamed, worked, pulled, glued, written, scrambled, leaped, cried, and have practically killed each other to bring you, our faithful readers and companions, a story worth reading. We ask you to bear with our ignorance and to continue to give us the support you have already blessed us with. Seriously folks, this year has been very memorable to many of us. We have pulled together as a team to produce something that we all believed in and have strived to achieve. We believe that this time in our life will reflect on later events and that if you pull together as a team and have faith in what you are doing, you will unite and can achieve anything. We have grown closer through this year, which has gone by so fast, and have become a type of family. We are strange and different in many people’s eyes, but isn’t everyone? The “‘family’’ at the Out of the Blue would like to thank you for your support. For those of you who think that we stole our name from (ugh) Debbie Gibson, please put your mind at rest and give us a little credit. We bid you peace. The band, under the direction of Mr. Jerry Tem- pleton, boasts nearly one hundred members. Their field shows featured formations of hearts and mountains, special instrumentals, a coun- try music solo, and a vocal duet accompanied by the entire band who sang in Swahilian. Gate City’s band has participated in numerous com- petitions. They attended band day at VPI. The GCHS band played a vital part in supporting the school’s football program. Their music is upbeat, their enthusiasm conta- gious, and their spirit is unbreakable. ee wer Herc YOU’VE COME A LONG WAY BABYII!!! WOULD YOU BELIEVE ... You were very fortunate to have some very devoted people who helped you go that extra mile. Now that the final mile has arrived, you can sit back and relax and eagerly await the arrival of the great day. It has indeed been a pleasure working with you. | wish you the very best in the future. Sincerely, (Haney k, Web When the last award has been given out, and the last speech of the evening has been delivered, the evening will draw to a close thus signifying the end of another school year. Yet, as we all know, the end of each evening implies the beginning of a new day. Wheat kind of a day will tomorrow bring - Judging by what we have seen here this year, tomorrow will be a bright and fair day filled with hope, because the fine young people of Gate City High School will be a part of that tomorrow. Scholarship, sportsmanship and commitment will sustain you in all the tomorrows to come . 151 As | lock the door of the annual staff room for the last time, | am locking precious memories into my heart. Memories of celebration, laughter, frustration, and hard work of dedicated people are brought to mind. There are many who need to be thanked for sharing these times with me. Rebecca Wininger has been with me in this task since day one. It all started at Annual Staff Camp at UVA and she has been there for me ever since. Not only is she a loyal and dedicated worker, she is also a very helpful friend. Rebecca, a simple thank you will never be enough for what you’ve done. | know you and Brigitte will do a super job on next year’s book. Best of luck to both of you; you both mean a lot to me and deserve the best. Thank you both for an excellent job! To my study hall crew — thanks for everything. You guys have been great friends! When my spirits were run down, you lifted them up! Michelle, Debbie, Greg, Becky, Sheila, and Amy. Thanks for being such wonderful friends. | owe sincere gratitude to every teacher. Each one has been very helpful. Thanks for being so understanding every time | interrupt class or ask for help. You’ve all been very generous. ‘‘Mr. Mac’? — You know that | could never thank you enough for your love, guidance, and support. I'll always remember everything you’ve done for me. A special thank you to Earnest Miller and Ralph Hensley for the use of their pictures. To all of my staff and friends — | love you for putting up with me! To all of my fellow seniors — Best of luck, and God bless. | owe my sincere gratitude to Mrs. Ward!
