It was situated about one and one-half miles north of Gaston, School was held only four months out of the year. Two years later this was increased to six full months. Three months of school was held in the fall and three months in the spring. The teachers were paid 836 a month and boarded with a different family each week. In 1874 a about one-half mile ing was built. The in 1870 the Yamhill piece of land was purchased from Mrs. McLeod, north of Gaston, and a one-room frame build- number of pupils averaged about ten, also district No. 55 and the Gaston district No. 11, joined to become district No. ll Jt. A frame building was built on the present site in 1897, the schoolboard paying Mr. Gaston 8100 for the land. In 1915 a brick building was built and has since served as a building for both high school and grade school, The present building was remodeled in the fall of 1939. Q A , ,pf S NIOR CLASS HISTORY The Senior Class of 1941 started its high school educan tion on September 13, 1937 with Mr. Smith as class advisor and Glenn Meredith as class president. The usual initiation and Fresh- man-Sophomore parties soon followed, The rather uneventful year was concluded with an all school picniceat Avalon Park, The second year was begun on September 12, 1938 with Mr. Walsh as class advisor, and Glenn Meredith again as classspresident. The initiation of the Freshmen was the major achievement of the year, The year was once more brought to a close with a picnic at Avalon Park, Due to remodeling of the school building, the third year did not begin until October 9, 1939. During this, our Junior year, both the girls and boys won intramural basketball champion- ships. The class had a special picnic at Avalon Park near the end of the year, The school picnic was held for a third time at Avalon Park. Glenn was again elected class president and Mr. Walsh as class advisor. The fourth year was started on September 9, 1940 with Mr. Lawrence as class advisor and Wayne Peckham as class presi- dent, Many parties made the year very enjoyable, During the year the class made two trips to Salem, On the first trip we visited the State Hospital, Fairview Home, State Penitentiary, and the State Blind School. On the second trip we visited the State Legislature while it was in session. As the Senior Play we presented UMurdered Alive,W a three act mystery, netting SAO. The much-looked-forward-to event, the Senior Sneak, was pulled off without a hitch very early on the morning of April 13. Everyone enjoyed the three day stay at Newport greatly. We land in the glorious future and are carried to the Theater of Tomorrow in a luxurious limousine of the most modern vintage, We enter the theater and are seated before the screen. Suddenly there flashes before us a vision of Wayne Peckham's mar- velous school, which specializes in the nlight fantastic.U The door to the dancing studio is pushed open violently and a young man storms in carrying a sample case filled with a famous brand of cosmetics. The young man is none other than Glenn Meredith who has been voted the most valuable and voluble sales- mand of 1960. This picture fades and we see a crowded street corner. In the center cf the crowd we see and hear Lucille Epling, now president of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, trying to convert young people to her views which seem to have changed some- what g ' When we had recovered from this shock sufficiently, we beheld a beautiful forest and hill. A cabin appearedg the door opened, and the occupant was revealed. She was sitting on a stool , her bare feet on a barrel, smoking a corn-cob pipe. She turns to us--Mary Koberstein!! The scene changes. Before us is a magnificent concert hall. We are awed by the sound of inspiring music directed by Maestro Howard Bangs whose waving auburn locks are whipped about violently through his efforts and the love of music. Next we see a little white cottage within the city limits. We see a beautiful blond woman sur- rounded by five adorable little children all weeping bitterly, It is the former Wanda Flett, recently deserted by her husband, Everett Lee, who has gone to take up his lifelong ambition of becoming an undertaking gig, Vainly cursing the faithless Everett we now see Evelyn Coy, finally reconciled to the fact that she will never be tall, but still trying to find a stretching device that will keep others from suffering such a handicap. ' We see next a large theater in which is being shown for an unprecedented run the most successful production of the year, starring Miss Jane Kikuchi, the leading character acress of America. The next scene is an entirely different one-a dense South American jungle. As the picture unfolds before us, we learn that Miss Lorraine Williams, now a noted scientist, has entered the untouched wilds, in search of a snake's fang, with which she hopes to revolutionize the theory pn the construction of false teeth. The scene changes rapidly and we behold a freighter bound for the Orient. Our gaze travels to the hold and we find Lois Heesacker, very thoroughly stowed away, hoping to reach India to buy precious stones for an exclusive New York jewelry store. Next we have before us a vision of Uwackyn Professor Mio, who is now absolutely positive that he has discovered a new planet, the presence of which, if conditions on earth are correct- ed, will premanently cure insomnia. The next scene shows a court room--and we meet Mr. Louis Madison, new known as the foremost ambulance chaser in America, who can make an argument last longer than any other shystcr alive. The following picture shows almost the opposite--a male nurse for infants. We see Charles Furumasu vainly trying to per- suade an infant to imbibe his morning milk. Charlie's slogan is, Whaybe your child doosn't need a nurse, but give me a chance.n Next a fashionable beauty shop is revealed and we see the loading hair stylist industriously work- ing on a rebellious head of hair. The hair stylist, Ray Cline, is now perfecting a hair style for women. At last the revelations of the future come to an end, and we clamber into our space ship and start M on our homeward journey back to 1941. wg , R We "U 4. :ff 5.-ji A' , r i P 'i ,2 :, 1 4 f i QI - 4 Ff 5 W.: 5-if ' 3 is 'vs , 2422 1, ,w 1 Y , .Q 5 'fi V-.3 1 ,J Q4 1:5 1- xi . The Juniors have done very well in sports this year, fAt least we think so,D Tom Sugai, Maryellen Ahlgren, and Teola Perkins have been regular honor roll students, The Juniors sold candy all year, The money was used to give the Junior-Senior Banquet which was held in the Congregation- al Church on May 2. The banquet was a huge success, Maryellen Ahlgren, Teola Perkins, and Darold McCoy re- presented the Junior Class at Salem this year at the Junior Con- ference sponsored by the Willamette University. The Juniors sponsored a Trick Harmonica Act on April 7. The show was held in the assembly for all school children and their parents, It was much enjoyed by all who attended, The class chose Mr. Metzger as their advisor. His leadership and direction have been greatly appreciated by all the members of the Junior Class. Disaster struck the Junior Class in mid-April when Tom Sugai lost his middle finger in the planer in shop class. This was a definite loss to the baseball team as Tom had been one of the first team men all season, playing second base, QiRiiiiilkiiikikkiRiS!?HQii'if'H'ii751jiikp'E'kii:Zi'i2:'232iEiH5i2ii'-2?-iiii4?!HI'ii'323S-kilt-IHHI'MQSQXQRQRQNREQQRKQQWRNNKXHN ii' if 'Ii' u 'H' ii- if 42 W 'Orin N Koberstein ?23!'il-ii"li"3i'S5iH?521'4'i2"Xi"Y'c'!2'?i'i!'3!-W 4 ,,:. , n u n 5 I i .,A, N .,:,. Mr. Metzger is a graduate of Oregon State College, where he went after a brilli- ant high school career at Gresham High, The team opened the season with a 22-20 victory over the Newberg College Frosh, The next game saw the team go to Coach' Metzger's home town, Gresham, to lose by a count of 18-13, The boys were Wscared stiffn playing such a large school but gave a very good account of themselves as the score indicates. After the Gresham game the team met Banks in a two game series which saw Gaston win on its home floor by a 20-17 count, The second game was played at Banks which our boys lost 19-24. Both games were very closely contested and provided much needed experience, The league opener found Gaston pitted against Dundee in the first tilt of the evening. The score was 9-8 in favor of Dun- dee, The Southern teams who were pitted against the Northern teams won very decisively as Yamhill and Carlton, who were the other mem- bers of the Northern team, lost to Dayton and Lafayette respective- ly. The Gaston cheering section came through with flying colors and won the cup that was offered for the best cheering section at the opening. After the county opener, the Greyhounds met a vastly superior Pacific University Frosh quintet and were vanquished by the score of 33-13. The first league game found Gaston playing Dundee on our own floor. In no mood to be trifled with the Greyhounds trampled ' the visitors 31-18, Peckham and Mio led all scorers on both teams, Our next league game we journeyed to Carlton where we played the most exciting game of the year. Both teams were even- ly matched and at the end of the regular playing time the score stood 21-21. To make matters worse, Mio, Peckham, and Eldon C., were on the bench with four personals. Both teams scored in the first five minute overtime period making the score 23-23. Ifter the two minute rest period the second overtime period was start- ed, in which the first team to score two points won the game. Carlton scored one point on a foul conversion and the score stood 24-23 in favor of Carlton, With only three seconds left to play, Charlie hoisted a beautiful howitzer from the center of the floor which gave us the game 25-24, "."P'- - ' j'?f1-2' 1-' 1-:rr , '- re.!j: P-'z'j'rF" FIS! The second half of the season was opened by a 37el7 rout over Dundee, Eldon Cedorgreen was the UBig Berthan of the attack as he scor- ed 10 points in the second halfh The next game was with Carlton: Unlike the first game, this was a complete walk-away for Gaston. Mio led in scoring as Gaston ran its score up to 35 and held Carlton to 8 points. We lost the next two games with Yamhill, 24-18, and to Dayton 22-10. Honorary Captain Mio led four seniors in their fare- well game against Lafayette. The Greyhounds were clicking and won easily 25-15. Bill Heesacker scored ten points to pace the attack. Sanford Mio, Wayne Peckham, Charles Furumasu, and Howard Bangs were the four seniors who played in their fare- well game in league competition, Banks beat the Greyhounds in a three game series to see which team would go to the District Tournament at Astoria. Scores were 19-23, 24-14, and 19-16, At the Albany College Invitational Tournament, Gaston won the second place consolation cup, In our first game we lost to the Roseburg WBH team 25-19. Roseburg won second place'in the championship flight. With Eldon Cedergreen leading the at- tack, the Greyhounds ran rough-shod over Colton. This was the most points the Greyhounds had scored in any game during the season, Three games in two days was more than Gaston could take and the Greyhounds lost to Mohawk Indians 43-14. Mohawk won first place consolation. sSanford Mio received honorable mention on the all- star team that was chosen at the tournament, Out of 23 games played this season, we won 10 and lost 13. With three senior boys quiting the team and the loss of Tom Sugai, who lost his finger in a shop acci- dent, Coach Metzger has been working with the underclassmen and the boys have made a very good showing even though we did lose all of our games except one. With the experience the boys are getting this year, we should have a very good team for the next few yearsf The first game saw the Greyhounds journey to Tigard for a practice game which they lost 10-6. Without any more practice games because of damp weather, we had our league opener against the more experienced Yamhill team. We lost the game 13-9. Errors accounted for most of the runs for both teams. The next two games saw Gaston journey from home and lose one to Lafayette 6-1 and another to Carlton 6-4. Both games were well played and the boys showed much improvement over the previous games. Coach Metzger led his charges against a veteran Bank's team in a practice game which we lost 13-5. in favor The next game was played at Yamhill with the score 14-2 of Yamhill. Against Carlton our boys rose up with a stirring five run rally in the fifth inning to tie up the ball game, only to lose it as Carlton scored one run in their half of the seventh in- ning. The score was 6-5. Against Dundee the boys were again out on the short end of a 10-2 score.
