"Even though we're only in the eighth grade," Jessica Newman notes, "we receive a lot of pressure about malsing good grades and what college we're thinlsing of attending." Sometimes the pressure is overwhelming, As 8th-grade language arts teacher Mr. Mclntosh remarlss, "When students lools to grades as measures of self-worth, then grades are no longer useful. Grades actually measure little, l've never encountered a grading system that is 'lobiectivef' although many claim to be. Grades should be recognized for what they are - one of the teacher's several tools for motivating students." . . . but they sure don't hurt ---r ft iii agen' I gsyi i c vi 4301 M WW I 3 E , gmnguunvo-01 3 Newman: "We receive a lot of pressure . . ' A school isn't worth anything unless everybody has an opportunity to make choices." Mr. Templeton observes Mrs. Planer s oth grade social studies class in action. In focus: Headmaster Ken Templeton This year, Gaston Day School welcomed bacls an old friend, Kenneth Templeton, to serve as its fourth headmaster. A former GDS math teacher, Mr, Templeton was with the school during its first decade, from 196878, Soon after the school moved from Belmont to its present site, Mr. Templeton decided he wanted to teach overseas, so he spent the next seven months in Tehran, Iran, until he and his family were forced to leave the country in the midst of revolution His next teaching assignment brought him to Bogota, Columbia, where he and his family lived for the next five years Then, last summer, Mr, Templeton returned to his native turf to serve as Gaston Day's headmaster, "North Carolina is my home," Mr, Templeton declares. "I thinls it wasiust time to come bacls " The new headmaster believes there is a great need in Gaston County for a private school of Gaston Day's capabilities, Here, he believes students can thrive "in an environment that's small enough that they can be themselves, where they can raise part in what's going on, and help to malse decisions" concerning the school "A school isn't worth anything," Mr, Templeton maintains, "unless everybody has an opportunity to malse choices," Thus, one of the new headmasters first items of business was organizing a school policy committee staffed by GDS students, "l hope we can increase the involvement of students in the decisionfmalsing process," he stresses. While Mr, Templeton was teaching overseas, the enrollment in the upper shool declined significantly. "I hope that over the next two or three years, we can start to build the upper school enrollment back," he says, ln addition, Mr, Templeton hopes to move the school towards SACS CSouthern Association of Colleges and Schools? accreditation during the next few years, and plans to continue "providing op' portuniries in the arts 4 theatre, music, painting, and design" here at Gaston Day l-le cites as one of his main goals adding more prof r grams in the arts. "l'm comfortable here," Mr. Templeton says of Gaston Day. "l thinls the school provides a very strong academic program Y but that doesn't mean we can't do even more " N, 'JN v HZ , l' ,5 ' f Magnum Mg . "l think the school provides a very strong academic program - but that doesn't mean we can't do even more." Mr. Templeton erjoys a Pepsi after all the students have cleared OUT for the evening "I hope that over the next two or three years, we can start to build the upper school enrollment back." The new headmaster watches Gaston Day defeat Providence Day in its home opener, -gc if ff . ti , ',. i H , , - 2 4 y . I 'YW ,,,f , M "I'm comfortable here." Donning a Gl Joe hat and a pair of deely-boppers as a Play Day get-up, Mr. Templeton serves as a line judge for the day. "l hope that we can increase involvement of students in the decision-making process." Mr. Templeton tutors Dallas Newton during his study hall. Such individual teaching attention is one of Gaston Day's features, the headmaster maintains. 8 l School directors Morionno Cone, Lower School Director. Thot's how the 86 Orca 80 staff wanted to capture Gaston Day this year. Of course, bringing GDS into focus required o darkroom full of chemicals, o few hundred feet of Kodak film, and a handful of dedicated photographers, editors, designers, writers, and ad salesmen. Getting o school "in focus" meant sorting through stacks of unfocused photos for that perfect shot - and often not finding it, it meant stoying after school to develop film in the darkroom, only to find that the whole roll had been overexposed. lt meant redoing DPS layouts two or three times till they were finally right. And it meant begging your uncle's company for another half-page od to keep the bools solvent. Listen, l got a deadline to meet, and the moil's running in a few minutes. TW? L l The Spartans pause before the Homecoming Game to pay respect to our head Spartan, Ken Templeton. Jump! Marla Newton and Perry Aycocls get the jump on defense. Football The Spartans in Review From the cold dew of double seasons in Spring practice to the mire and rain of the last game in November, this year brought the Varsity Football Team into focus. With many returning players, the experience and sense of rivalry against the conference teams and the talent ofthe first year students molded the team into a unit that was successful both in record and in spirit. Many of the games this year were played by the element, such as the delay at Heathwood Hall, the hurri- cane cancellation at Pender Academy, and the mire and mud of the Latin game. With only two losses during the season to Country Day School, who placed second in the state, and to Latin, who placed second in the conference -- despite the disappointing loss against Latin by one point which knocked the team out of the playoff -- the Spartans won thrid place in the conference and had many starters on the all-conference team.
