On Lewis Day a well-planned prom was given for the retiring miners. During the summer vacation Mary Frances Hayduk and Elizabeth Kujbus, were fortunate enough to be chosen delegates to the Nationa1 Secretaries Association CGir1s' Statej. At the same time Bernard Cempella, Douglas Lester, Joe Lopez, Bill Bingham, Charles Lovelady, James Ayers and AndrewShulock attended the StateEngineers- ' meeting at Jackson's Mi11fBoys' Statej. When the retiring miners received their pensions they were assisted by Dorothy Needles and Douglas Lester. With the new modern equipment Mine No. 1951 was working out by May. Still digging for diplomas, the U. M. W. helped open Mine No. 1952. The Union Offi- cials were James Forgacs, Presidentg Arlene Harman, Vice Presidentg Flora Bridgeman, Secretaryg John Pakush, Treasurerg Joe Lopez, Sergeant-at-arms. The General Mine Foremen were Miss Margaret Stacks and Mrs. David Sargent. The Chief Fireboss was Mary Frances Hayduk, while Assistant Chief Fireboss was Patricia Kelly. Their helpers included: Charles Parker, Bill Bingham, Walter Clayton, Bemard Platis, James Forgacs. . The Coaldigger rescue squad which included Bill Bingham, Bill Rose, John Cure, Joe Lopez, Jim Warren, Norman Bryant, Clayton Day, Bill Nolley, James Lane, had not lost a single shift in twenty-eight straight years until the power went off because of a Beckley short circuit. Because of Frank Nelubovich's old age pension he has not worked with the rescue squad for some time. Under the sponsorship of the Engineering Department fAnnua1 Staffj the employees select- ed a queen--Arlene Harman. Janice Ann Bennington was selected Maid-of-Honor and Flora Bridgeman and Dorothy Needles were chosen to be attendants. Chief Engineer Robert Smith and his Assistant Chief Engineer, James Forgacs, selected Nancy Vance, Patricia Kelly, Bill Bingham, Joe Lopez, and harles Parker to provide entertainment for the queen and her courts. The Mine Foremen fl-Ionor Societyj selected new members: Arlene Harman, Dorothy Oleksa, Janice Bennington, Jo Ann Bradley, James Forgacs, Charles Lovelady, Elizabeth Kujbus, Ruby Blevins and Bemard Platis. The Assistant members included Andrew Shulock, Sharlene Ball, Betty Harman, Natalie Clark, Charlotte Lambert, Shirley McCormick, Helen Lambert, Norma Sadler, Kenneth Bradley. The 1952 miners have just filled their last car of coal and stand ready to turn over the mine to the new owners, the miners of 1953.
