Qlass lhistnrg Assistant GeneralSuperintendentCharles W. Dean wishes to submit to Mr. George W. Bryson the following report concerning the record of the Gary U. M. W. , otherwise known as Gary High School, during the years of 19 9-1952. ln the fall of 1949 the local U. M. W. was organized, electing Bill Rose, Presidentg James Findley, Vice-President: JohnHopkins, Secretary, Norman Bryant, Treasurer, John Cure, Sergeant- at-arms. The General Mine Foremen that year were Mr. Robert Smith and Mrs. Mildred Williams. Douglas Lester and Arlene Harman were promoted to firebosses Cstudent councilj. The annual Lewis Day was celebrated at Elbert Lodge with spikeless cokes and raw hot dogs. Each miner was entitled to bring his family. A good time was had by all. Billy Bingham and Jim Warren were awarded letters for distinguished service on the Coal- digger rescue team ffootballj team. With the coming of May and the closing of Mine No. 1949, the miners were given their annual vacation. In September, the new 1950 mine was opened with great expectations. That year the U. M. W. elected Bemard Platis, President: Douglas Lester, Vice President: Janice Bennington, Secretary: James Forgacs, Treasurerg and Bill Bingham, Sergeant-at-arms. The General Mine Foremen for that year were Mrs. Virginia Garwood and Mrs. Pete McCoy. The firebosses for the new mine were Dorothy Oleksa, Jo Ann Bradley, Nancy Vance, Bemard Platis, Walter Clayton, and Jim Warren. Local U. M. W's. representatives on the Coal- digger's rescue squad, were Bill Bingham, Jim Warren, Bill Rose, and Jim Wilson. Dorothy Needles and Nancy Vance led the company band as majorette and drum major respectively. The safety directors fbasketball teamj this year included Jim Warren, Bill Bingham, Bernard Cempella, Bill Rose, Joe Lopez, and John Cure. The Mine Foremen fHonor Societyy selected new members who were Mittie Harris, Mary Frances I-Iayduk, Walter Clayton, Douglas Lester, and John Pakush. Associate members were Bemard Platis, James Forgacs, Arlene Harman, Sharlene Ball, Dorothy Oleksa, Janice Bennington, Kenneth Bradley, Betty Harman, Andrew Shulock,' Magdalene Clark, Elizabeth Kujbus, and Patricia Kelly. The men and women's team of Mine No. 1951 both emerged victorious in the inter-mine qclassj toumament sponsored for the entertainment and relaxation of the employees. Further entertainment for employees was the hit play, Our Miss Brooks, which included such world-famous actresses and actors as Doris Tolley, Janice Bennington, Jo Ann Bradley, Nancy Vance, Elizabeth Kujbus, Patricia Kelly, Magdalene Clark, Betty Brickey, Teddy Zachwieja, James Warren, Walter Clayton, James Forgacs, Jackie Charles, Bill Bingham, John Cure, Bill Rose, and that three time Oscar winner--Mary Frances Hayduk.
