Bryson the following report concerning the record of the Gary U. M. W. , otherwise known as Gary High School, during the years of 19 9-1952. ln the fall of 1949 the local U. M. W. was organized, electing Bill Rose, Presidentg James Findley, Vice-President: JohnHopkins, Secretary, Norman Bryant, Treasurer, John Cure, Sergeant- at-arms. The General Mine Foremen that year were Mr. Robert Smith and Mrs. Mildred Williams. Douglas Lester and Arlene Harman were promoted to firebosses Cstudent councilj. The annual Lewis Day was celebrated at Elbert Lodge with spikeless cokes and raw hot dogs. Each "miner" was entitled to bring his family. A good time was had by all. Billy Bingham and Jim Warren were awarded letters for distinguished service on the Coal- digger rescue team ffootballj team. With the coming of May and the closing of Mine No. 1949, the miners were given their annual vacation. In September, the new 1950 mine was opened with great expectations. That year the U. M. W. elected Bemard Platis, President: Douglas Lester, Vice President: Janice Bennington, Secretary: James Forgacs, Treasurerg and Bill Bingham, Sergeant-at-arms. The General Mine Foremen for that year were Mrs. Virginia Garwood and Mrs. Pete McCoy. The firebosses for the new mine were Dorothy Oleksa, Jo Ann Bradley, Nancy Vance, Bemard Platis, Walter Clayton, and Jim Warren. Local U. M. W's. representatives on the Coal- digger's rescue squad, were Bill Bingham, Jim Warren, Bill Rose, and Jim Wilson. Dorothy Needles and Nancy Vance led the company band as majorette and drum major respectively. The safety directors fbasketball teamj this year included Jim Warren, Bill Bingham, Bernard Cempella, Bill Rose, Joe Lopez, and John Cure. The Mine Foremen fHonor Societyy selected new members who were Mittie Harris, Mary Frances I-Iayduk, Walter Clayton, Douglas Lester, and John Pakush. Associate members were Bemard Platis, James Forgacs, Arlene Harman, Sharlene Ball, Dorothy Oleksa, Janice Bennington, Kenneth Bradley, Betty Harman, Andrew Shulock,' Magdalene Clark, Elizabeth Kujbus, and Patricia Kelly. The men and women's team of Mine No. 1951 both emerged victorious in the inter-mine qclassj toumament sponsored for the entertainment and relaxation of the employees. Further entertainment for employees was the hit play, "Our Miss Brooks, " which included such world-famous actresses and actors as Doris Tolley, Janice Bennington, Jo Ann Bradley, Nancy Vance, Elizabeth Kujbus, Patricia Kelly, Magdalene Clark, Betty Brickey, Teddy Zachwieja, James Warren, Walter Clayton, James Forgacs, Jackie Charles, Bill Bingham, John Cure, Bill Rose, and that three time Oscar winner--Mary Frances Hayduk. On Lewis Day a well-planned prom was given for the retiring miners. During the summer vacation Mary Frances Hayduk and Elizabeth Kujbus, were fortunate enough to be chosen delegates to the "Nationa1 Secretaries Association" CGir1s' Statej. At the same time Bernard Cempella, Douglas Lester, Joe Lopez, Bill Bingham, Charles Lovelady, James Ayers and AndrewShulock attended the "StateEngineers-"' meeting at Jackson's Mi11fBoys' Statej. When the retiring miners received their pensions they were assisted by Dorothy Needles and Douglas Lester. With the new modern equipment Mine No. 1951 was working out by May. Still digging for diplomas, the U. M. W. helped open Mine No. 1952. The Union Offi- cials were James Forgacs, Presidentg Arlene Harman, Vice Presidentg Flora Bridgeman, Secretaryg John Pakush, Treasurerg Joe Lopez, Sergeant-at-arms. The General Mine Foremen were Miss Margaret Stacks and Mrs. David Sargent. The Chief Fireboss was Mary Frances Hayduk, while Assistant Chief Fireboss was Patricia Kelly. Their helpers included: Charles Parker, Bill Bingham, Walter Clayton, Bemard Platis, James Forgacs. . The Coaldigger rescue squad which included Bill Bingham, Bill Rose, John Cure, Joe Lopez, Jim Warren, Norman Bryant, Clayton Day, Bill Nolley, James Lane, had not lost a single shift in twenty-eight straight years until the power went off because of a Beckley short circuit. Because of Frank Nelubovich's old age pension he has not worked with the rescue squad for some time. Under the sponsorship of the Engineering Department fAnnua1 Staffj the employees select- ed a queen--Arlene Harman. Janice Ann Bennington was selected Maid-of-Honor and Flora Bridgeman and Dorothy Needles were chosen to be attendants. Chief Engineer Robert Smith and his Assistant Chief Engineer, James Forgacs, selected Nancy Vance, Patricia Kelly, Bill Bingham, Joe Lopez, and harles Parker to provide entertainment for the queen and her courts. The Mine Foremen fl-Ionor Societyj selected new members: Arlene Harman, Dorothy Oleksa, Janice Bennington, Jo Ann Bradley, James Forgacs, Charles Lovelady, Elizabeth Kujbus, Ruby Blevins and Bemard Platis. The Assistant members included Andrew Shulock, Sharlene Ball, Betty Harman, Natalie Clark, Charlotte Lambert, Shirley McCormick, Helen Lambert, Norma Sadler, Kenneth Bradley. The 1952 miners have just filled their last car of coal and stand ready to "turn over" the mine to the new owners, the miners of 1953. May their years at the mine be as profitable and as pleasant as ours. 716013 1,5 gf ' MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED BEST DISPOSITION n . -wx BEST LOOKING Q9 TEACHER'S PET BEST ALL-AROUND MOST POPULAR F r i C n d 1 i s S I CLASS C LOW N si ea 'Y 512365 Wx 4058, exp QOY Q6 ww BEST DANCER wi BEST DRESSED BEST ATHIIETE MAN KILLER LADY KILLER N e a I e s I MOST OUTSTANDING I I v will' Queen Qi I ff, 65:4 ' v?P IZ! .gy -ay, ig. r- A- -v.A 3" . ,f 0 si L llii ,j wsu x y fy, Li MR.
