I..I , , I ,-f,f1 ,WI BOARD OIT DIRECTORS Ann Dunn, Beverly Richardson, Floyd BlaIkwc11.G.Iry Pridcaux, XX'.1yIIc Mullms HISTORY OF THE 1957 SENIOR CLASS On the srxth day of August 1945 about one hundred and frfty sux and sexen ycar old boys and grrls passed through the portals of the old Garland Elementary School Some of us came wrth joy some of us came wxth fear but all of us came wth our mothers We had just begun to become famllrar wrth that two story red brxck ednfrce when one snowy mornlng rn anuary of 1946 rt burned to the ground How happy we wcre' We enjoyed a brlef vacatron before returnrng to school Our flrst grade was completed 1n some army barracks temporanly erected behrnd the srte of the conflagrated structure Our second year of publrc schoolrng was also spent rn army barracks These occupred a plot of ground where umor Hrgh School now stands As we entered the thrrd grade ln 1947 a brand new school was opened to us After one and a half years of barracks the sh1ny just completed Central Elementary School looked wonderful The fourth grade was the frrst tlme that we had spent more than a year rn the same burldrng We werent used to thls sort of thing but we stayed there anyway Agarn we were to move to a new school at least a portron of us were Erghty of us were transferred to the new B H Freeman Elementary School halfway through the f1fth grade whrle the remarnder stayed at Central Happrness and sadness marked our feelrngs happy because of a new school sad because we were to be separated W drdnt thrnk we could bear xt but we saw the rest of the frfth grade through and passed our srxth year wrth lrttle thought of the separatron A frrendly rryalry exen sprang up between the two schools To show therr respect for each other the schools exchanged names of mutual admrratlon the Central Srssres and the Freeman Freaks We were reunnted 1n the Seventh Grade the second class to enter the splendrd new extracurrxcular actnvrtres to our program Organrzed sports football basketball base ball and track were partrcnpated rn by many of the athletic asprrants We had parties dances and many projects both of servlce and profrt As we adyanced we began to feel the rnfluence of Hlgh School Our fond farewells were sald to Mr Sellers and unlor Hlgh at our graduatlon and prom May 29 1954 True the system was slrghtly varred from any we had theretofore known and the gomg was a lrttle rough But we caught on qurckly and our Sophomore year ended wrth a sense of accomplrshment We were much more confrdent as our unror year approached We became more and more rnvolved rn the school actmtres On our shoulders rested the responsrbrhty of frnancrng the un1orSen1or Prom Many magazrne subscnptrons and numerous paper drrves provrded the money as we drd the work The Prom was a huge success and ex en more srgnrflcant was the fact that we could unrte and work toward a common goal Thus eleven years were behrnd us as we entered G H S for the last trme The ac complrshments of the Class of 57 are numerous and our reputatxon of hrgh rntegnty and honest endeavor w1ll leave rts nmprrnt on thrs school To be sure not all of us have spent the full twelye years rn Garland many haue come and gone but We the Semor Class of Garland Hrgh School of 1957 are completmg twelye years of hard work and full satrsfactron behrnd To all those teachers prlncmpals admmrstrators custodrans we are deeply rndebted Wrth God s help we wrll strrve to be worthy of your faxth 1n us Bobby Vrrden 7 y ' D V, . k Y 71 , , , . , ' , 1 2 - e . , . . . Coach Bill Ellington's Owls were rated fifth before the season started and dropped to eighth after being defeated 12-7 in the second game. A drop didn't effect the Owls, for they entered the Dis- trict 5-AAA play on October 19, riding a three game winning streak and never lost a game thereafter, They copped the district crown with a 37-6 win over Brewer. Then the Owls journeyed to Gainesville and entered the State playoffs for the third consecutive year, This was the big year as the Owls won every playoff game. The Owls eliminated Gainesville, 39-O, took Cle- burne, 20-6, journeyed to San Angelo and tripped Little- field, 28-2, and climaxed the season with a 3-0 win over Nederland in the final game in Nederland on Saturday, December 22. Now, until next year the student body will put away the spirit of football and turn to the other equally important sports. J 3 A TENNIS 1957 THE TENNIS SUCCESS STORY The Garland High School tennis team has participated in numerous tournaments this year with schools from all over the state. This year, for the first time, Garland was host to a tennis tournament sponsored by the Garland Tennis Association. The team has com- peted with North Dallas, Highland Park, Hillcrest, Woodrow Wfilson all of Dallas, Wichita Falls, Commerce, Greenville, and Stephen F. Austin. The team competed in district competition at Fort Worth in April. Mr. Williams and his team have done a great job this year and we are looking forward to a bright future for tennis in GHS. MR. The fighting owls, under the direction of Homer Johnson, were edged out in state meet by only one run in each game. Lynn Skelton hit the first home run in the nine year history of the state meet.
