GARFIELD GLEANER SPRING 1941 DEDICATION THIS COPY OF THE GLEANER IS RESPECTFULLY DEDICATED TO OUR PRINCIPAL, OLIVER C. LAWSON OUR STAUNCH AND UNDERSTANDING FRIEND PUBLISHED BY THE GARFIELD STUDENT ASSOCIATION GARFIELD JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA
Page 4 text:
OUR PRINCIPAL In a few days another school year will end and approximately twelve hundred boys and girls of Garfield will be scattering to various places starting on their vacations. Two hundred and sixty boys and girls will bid Garfield fare- well and be listed on the ever-increasing roster of the Garfield graduates. We can all look back over the past year and recall many pleasant times. Then we look to the future and plan for more good times ahead farther up the ladder. With confidence that work well done is our greatest contribution to society, we can go forward with hope and the knowledge that we can meet all obstacles and surmount them courageously. Your friend, OUR STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT As the Class of Spring, 1941, passes out of the portals of Garfield, it leaves to the students remaining a student government based on the democratic system. In these times of world revolution, it becomes more and more apparent that an effort must be made if we are to preserve our form of govern- ment. Democracy is of a two-fold character; its privileges flow to its citizens, but the life-blood that carries them must be returned purified by duty performed. If democracy grants privileges, it, also, requires service. Such a lesson is not one to be overlooked at Garfiel d. It is the duty of every student not only to render his best in his academic work, but to serve and believe in that form of government. If each does this, it will not only improve our school, but the experience gained will better enable him to take up the responsibilities of a good citizen when that time comes. In your hands, then, we of the graduating class leave this small torch of democracy. " Be yours to hold it high! " LLOYD MACDONALD. y
