Realizing what a tre- mendous amount of work lay before her, Miss Di Pietro gen- erously donated all her time and eitort to make this book a great success. Compiling the yearbook took many months of thoughtful planning and hours of hard work but Mliss Di Pietro, with patient interest and determination, finally achieved the worthwhile goal. Striving to hnd words with which to express our gratefulness to her is difficult indeed. For our appreciation to Miss Di Pietro is truly sincere and to thank her enough seems almost impossible. School 6 POEM STANDING IN our hearts as a symbol so stately and tall, Lincoln School 6 will be remembered by us all. For it was here we studied and managed to get our work done Besides joking, cutting classes and having lots of fun. Grand teachers and classmates were of the very best, Together with our principal, secretary and all the rest. A dear old school where everyone strived together, This is how it will be pictured, now, and forever. 4 ig X' Crowded W i t ll memories of so- cial events, foot- bzlll games and c a n t e en square dances, our treas- ure chest of joy- ful school days is sealed within this yearbook. In time to come, such affairs will long be rememberedg glancing at action shots will make them seem as if they just took place yesterday. Reminiscing of happy school days gone by make Locked Memories re-live again, as the key turns, and the succeeding pages are slowly turned unfolding things of the past. f Q 2 E l' 5 i 1 Q School 9 f sk f w ' :Cf Q as fxzgpa x EL l muy I s m s I J Nxqsl PN' V s'3V f'E W X ' 'll alll? j Z ,QEIHXWQW 31 'lgi lad f 'ff' N ' f , 'Flip tel fi 7 llllgillfln ll, WL: fx Xn 9 ,Z N KX X Z f GARFIELD HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1941 JeH'erson Allen Joseph Aloia Henrik Andrejcsak Vincent Antoniuk Michael Bak Joseph Barillo Peter Barrale Edward Bartnowski Joseph Benigno Ely Berenson Primo Bidinost Peter Bondonna Ray Breda Frank Buglino Joseph Capko Vincent Ciolino William Cizmark Stanley Czwartynski Charles Dittrich Victor Eberhard Joseph Elek Leonard Fagone Seymour Feinman fdischargedj Walter Fisher Jr. Eugene Fontana Peter Gabor Gerald Greco Joseph Gondza Silvio Grasso fdisehargedj John Hacik John Haluska Andrew Hartos William Hromyk Michael Humenik Anthony Imbruglia Benjamin Jaskot Leon Kaminsky Steven Katorincek Alexander Klecha Stanley Klecha 'Thaddeus Klepatsky Michael Kobylarz Ferdinand Kolasa Richard Kolbeck John Korbicz Nicholas Korniloff Eugene Koshlap Louis Krzych Edward Kubis Victor Kupiszewski Casimir Kudlacik George Kurak Leonard La Beur John Lacey Joseph Ladna Justine La Rocca Edward Leskanic William Librera Victor Licciardi Leonard Lis Zigmund Lis Andrew Lotacky Rocco Mancini Charles Mangano Michael Markovich Emil Milulik Rocco Molinari Julius Nitus Andrew N osal Stanley Nowak Dusan Ontko Andrew Palso Vincent Panarici John Pastor Alfred Pirrone Edward Popek Emil Pulzato Nicholas Puzino Alfred Restuccia Steve Sabo Paul Schempp Robert Schenkenberger Albert Schott idischargedj Teddy Semperkiewicz Adam Serafin Emil Shevin John Solanich Eugene Sudol Alex Toskovich Edward J . In all corners of the globe, infested jungles, muddy foxholes, and frigid zones of the north, mil- lions of boys of every race, color and creed are sacrificing their lives to make America safe. Soldiers, sailors, and marines are fighting side by side to pre- serve tlie outstanding principles of a democracy. You and' your faculty adviser may well be proud of the position you occupy in the life of the school, from classroom to club activities, from social affairs to athletic successes. My congratulations upon your inauguration of a yearbook, which in later years will unlock shining memories of the good days enjoyed at Garfield High School. 22 . In behalf of the Board of Education I extend congratulations To the Class of Nineteen Forty-five As you reach your destination As students of dear old Garfield High Your Alma Mater and mine May a trail of memories spur you on To do a job that's fine. Just as an acorn that becomes an oak tree After years of rugged weather, You too have been tested these past four years As you sought knowledge together And because you did not flinch or give up But stuck to your purpose to win, A High School diploma is your reward Before Life's career you begin. Your teachers, principals and parents are proud Because you've reached a goal For which they too did strive with you , With patient heart and soulg Pfl'51f1l lf We all hope that your dreams come true That good fortune comes your way And that the education you've received Pays dividends some day. -Margaret S. There have been many changes in the history of Garfield High School -changes that are necessary to keep the high school abreast of changing edu- cation in a dynamic civilization. Accordingly, our first year book, Locked Memories has come into being. lt will serve as a record and interpreter of our schools program. XXI sincerely hope that time will be lcintl to our annual and endow it with a spirit that will lift it to greater heights of encleayor antl achievement in the future. Congratulations to the faculty advisers ancl their staff of high school stuclents. V I C E P R I N C I P A L FRANK A. PAPAROZZI FRESHMEN HAVE assembled at our High School since 1919, and Seniors have graduated since February 1924. There have been outstanding pupils in every class, but this year's class has been fortunate in having an unusually large number of fine boys and girls. It is no wonder that they have earned the distinction of producing the first year book twenty-one years after the first alumnus was awarded a diploma. Congratulations, Class of 1945. Carry on and become fine men and women in our Garfield community. 3',W,.f, Q. 6' HEADSCN?DEPARTMENTS Hugh Wgxldcrs llItIlI.Yfl'jlI1 Arlx Malwl Mcrritt S4'i1'rI1'1' licrtha ,I4I'.lVCl'S f?1lHIllll'V'4'jdl Kathryn M.1r.1 luflglluiqf' llL'l'll11l lingg llixlory Pctcr Hubink Mclf,H'll1llffr'X S.ll'.l Millcr lillglixlv Arthur Argnucr Dfl'z'z'l0l'0fAffJ11'lif'.s GUI fffzlrllmfflfzlix: M.1lwl Grady Arlin Gclntl l'rcx'll1n 'l'l'.lX'L'l'S Lucy Adanms AI.l!'lll.l Scnccinfwm S.llX'.li0l'L' l:l'.ll1lil'l0 IIIQIIIIQ Pnpn1'0l7,i ,I.l10llLlS Mcclmn Malucl Mcrritt Annu 'lqomncllo ANCE DEPARTMENT 4 FACULTY MEMBERS Arlllur C. Committee at the Mistletoe lfrolic lid i IUNIOR PROM THE NIGHT of May 19 found the audi- torium ceiling of School 8 a blanket of blue studded with glittering silver stars. The soft music of Allison Barton set the mood. A round, shining moon and the swishing of colorful gowns gave it the finishing touches. Another tradi- tion began that evening, a beautiful and inspiring tradition. Evelyn Fromberger and joseph Hilla reigned supreme as King and Queen of the Prom. The ladies-in-waiting, the gentlemen of the court, the soft candle-glow, the solemn coronation ceremony . . . the class of '45 will never forget their junior Prom. THE BARN DANCE A BRILLIANT array of plaid shirts and dungarees was seen everywhere, as boys and girls went dancing by, The records were stopped and out came Chuck and his County Cousins. Square dancing was about to commence. With the help of the instructors, squares were formed. As the music started every- one listened to the caller's shout of swing your partner round and round. After two hilarious sets of these vigor- our country dances, everyone was con- tent to rest up for the next one. No one paid admission but gave a generous donation to the Red Cross. lam lar BOYS AND girls dressed in their best holiday clothes danced to the music of the Garfield High School Swing Band. Brightly lighted Christmas trees, decorated evergreen branches, and mistletoe adorned the auditorium. This was the setting when the first annual Christmas party of the jam Jar Can- teen got under way. Santa Claus stood in the doorway and everyone dropped small gifts in his bag before entering the hall. Later in the evening a conga line was formed and after dancing the merry--makers grabbed for presents and squeals of laughter was heard as they anxiously opened them. Then the lights dimmed, soft strains of I Don't Want to Love You were heard and the dancing resumed once again. After several hours of fun and dancing to sweet music and jitter-bugging to the fast numbers, eleven o'clock rolled around and the band packed up its instruments and after shouts of Merry Christmas and a Happy Year were heard, each received a bag of candy and headed for home. 1 I The lights suddenly dimmed. An unearthly hum filled the room with a nerve-wraking, pulsing vibration that played havoc withthe sound reasoning of your senses. The gypsy soothsayer began to sway, rolling her eyes fanatically. She placed her hideous hands above the crystal ball. A glaring white light came forth from the mystic globe. My eyes burnedg my blood throbbed in my veins. Finally, the old woman spokeg The mist is clearing. The veils of time lift to unravel the threads of the future. It seems to be snowing. The streets are blanketed in white. I see a sign post. just a minute, it says-oh, yes, Palisade Avenue. There are very many people. The electric lights Hash on and off. The snow glistens. I pass a shivering department store Santa Claus fEugene Trawinskij and a doctor's ofiice Uoseph Territoj as a long-bearded hermit fPeter Bondarukj peeks around the corner. A sombre-faced priest walks by fMike Bubenj. He shuns the gay atmosphere of the nightclub across the street. He squints at the huge neon sign advertising a famous orchestra leader Uoseph Berlingerij. The laughter and music beckon me. The gold buttons glittering on the door- man's fCharlie Schweitzerj coat add an enticing touch. A female bouncer fAlma Brown, stands menacingly at the door, occasionally talking with the hat check girl fClaudia Karleckej The Postmaster General Uulian Schim- mentij arrives with his guests. He has arranged a party for our distin- guished Nobel prize winners, Ethel Senkovits ffor discovering the 13th planet, Senkoviaj and joseph Pettineo finventor of dripless faucetsj. There's that bachelor about town Uoseph Hillaj holding hands with a sophisticated Metro- politan opera star QDorothy Celenkoj. Our first woman president fAnna Mae Lucasj enters on the arm of the famed inventor of canned La Pizza fjoseph Daidonej. A young debutante, fDoris Okolskij patronizes the cigar- ette girl fDorothy Licciardij. Three mathematical geniuses Qlileanor Nick- lus, Michael Nakonechny, joseph Galtierij sip pink champagne. They are interrupted by the celebrated actresses of the times, Doris Boettcher foozing dramaj and Gertrude Robinson foozing tears, who were jointly awarded a tiny Oscar, in the person of George Lushitsky. They begin to gossip about that new romance between a Conover model fMarie Sudiaj and Lord Faunt- leroy Qohn Trawinskij. The floor show is about to begin. The spotlight is thrown on the master of ceremonies fCon Kardashj. He slyly winks at the flower girl flilorence Soltysj and places the entertainment program for the evening on the stage. Time is fleeting. The program reads: Chorus girls fEvelyn Hetzer, Eleanor Raia, Wanda Pelkaj Latest crooning senation Uoseph Conte, Hi'll-billy Yodler fAlex Fafaraj Torch Singer fLottie Kopecj Comedy Team Uohn Bochiaro and Doris Chintalaj Something is happening! The mist is clouding my view. Everything is black. But wait! Kaliedoscopic colors are whirling. They take their places. The scene is laid. I hear colorful music from a nearby calliope. I am in the midst of a huge circus ground. The warm summer breezes blow gently against the swaying canvas which advertises the amazing uniqueness of the dwarf fEd- ward Hriczovj, giant Uohn Monchakj, superlady fRuth Smarshj, human bullet fFlorence Kobylarzj, strongman QFred Kaiserj, hula dancer fMargaret Van Vlietj and Moe-Moe, the featured sword swallower fM1arge Skupienj. The barker fMIike Sadikj introduces a tiny ballet dancer QEvelyn FromL bergerj, a provocative bubble dancer fAnn Hajnikj to the crowd. I enter the side show. The first platform features the snake charmer fGladys Cuoco charming Richard Thomasj, with her persuasive qualities. Next comes the Siamese twins QEdward Pruzinsky and Florence Bielenj. This unnatural phenomenon holds Ish K. Bibble Uean Pasinskaj in a stupor of amazement but she is now awakened by the cracking of rifle shots coming from the rigle range owned and operated by Edward Gless and Andrew Obssuth. A pick-pocket fCharles Rigoliosij steps forth to try his iluck. He discovers the rifle is too large for his hip pocket. He soon finds himself escorted off the grounds by two policemen fZigmund Banasiak and Edward Novackj. I pass the hypnotist Qoseph Russoj and the fortune-teller fMarion Friederman in a serious discussion about the mystic qualities of the ouiji board. r A huge tent is now in my path. It is the main tent. The cry of the ring master flfirank DeBenedettoj is now heard. The main show is about to be- gin. There is a large fan-fare and then suddenly from nowhere appears the bare-back rider fFrances Raiaj rmajestically riding toward the main ring. The trapeze artist QCamillia Heindlj is not to be outdone. She thrills Mr. and Mrs. Spectator QHarold Walter and Althea Pyottj with a triple somersault in mid-air. . ' U A A little boy and girl QHerbert Zockoll and Lillian Skimboj are running away from the truant officer Uoseph Milanj. They are noticed by Mandrake the Magician fAlbin Lisj, who is pulling the Cher-O-Kees out of his hat one by one. He coyly deceives the truant officer by covering them with his magic cloth. Bluebeard fAlex Feldman, sees the plot but remains the strong, silent type. The fat lady fMadeline Hartmannj and the human skeleton Qlrene Bolcarovicj are quarreling over the last bag of peanuts in the peanut vender's Uack Donkaj tray. They are interrupted by the good-humor man Uoseph Saggioj who offers them both a box ofl. Wait?-the globe is darkening -I can't make it out! The scene is shifting.
