The owner of the house, and also president of the fraternity, is George Brewster. George and the other fraternity brothers somehow manage to always make things more complicated than thev really are. The main problem they face is financing the house, as George puts it, " The monthly payments can bankrupt a Rockefeller! " But the money situation isn ' t the only thing threatening the existence of the Zoo. There ' s also the principal of the high school, the Zoo ' s rival fraternity, Phi Zeta Tau, a nosy neighbor who calls the Health Department to forever close the fraternity, and even George ' s father who wants to see George give up the place. 61 9a ar Mr. ? Jdartm 0-. (D ui muny f ar ie c ui c m rrn i y 7S — J 2 For when he spoke equality . . . The colors to behold . . . Were not the colors of black or white But of maroon and gold. He showed us all the beauty That comes from deep inside . . . He gave to every one of us A sense of love and pride He cared so much about his school And we saw in his eyes the caring the gleam the sparkle That brightens cloudy skies. But I know he ' s in a better place Of peacefulness and bliss We called him Mr. Chapman, A man we ' ll surely miss. by Simone Richardson 218 The song " The Way We Were " often is used as a theme in yearbooks. We did this in the 1981 Rampage. It would only seem appropriate to use this song in looking back at Mr. Martin Chapman. For when a person who is very special to us is gone, all we have left are the memories. Memories, light the corners of my mind . . . Martin Odes Chapman was born in Milledgeville, Georgia, on February 5, 1922. he was the second of three children born to Joseph and Odesa Chapman. Hisfather was a waiter in a local hotel chain. Mr. Chapman grew up in Milledgeville and Savannah, Georgia, until he was thirteen, when his mother brought her children to Akron, where she had relatives. Misty water color memories, of the way we were . . . Mr. Chapman attended Goodrich Junior High. He held various odd jobs such as shining shoes and sweeping in barber shops. His mother had to push him to keep his grades up, and hedidmanagetostay in the upper third of his class at Goodrich. After completing junior high, Mr. Chapman attended Garfield High, and sold papers on the side. He achieved marks high enough to get him on the Honor Roll. Through his school years, Mr. Chapman found himself most interested in math and science, and would have liked to become a doctor. Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind . . . After graduation from Garfield in 1 939, however, he found his dream to become a doctor financially impossible, and he decided to go into education. He did not know at the time how many people ' s lives he would touch in education. Ashe later said, " Education is my life. I feel I can better serve people as an educator than any other way. " Mr. Chapman passed the entrance exams to Akron University in the fall of 1 939, but then found he did not have the money to begin classes. He then got a job as a busboy at the Mayflower Hotel until he had enough money saved up to begin college. He kept the job at the Mayflower all through college, eventually becoming a waiter. Mr. Chapman had a very busy schedule throughout college from school, to football practice, to work. Besides being named All-Ohio and All-Conference Defensive End during his three years on the football team, Mr. Chapman was also on Varsity Track for two years. His college career was interrupted, however, whenduring World War II, he served in the Army, eventually becoming a corporal. Smiles we gave to one another, for the way we were . . . Mr. Chapman finally received his bachelor ' s degree in physical education in 1947. He then started off his career by teaching physical education, social studies, civics, and group guidance at Bryan and Crosby Elementaries, Goodyear and Thornton Junior Highs, and East High, from 1 947 to 1 957. He was also an assistant football coach during his three years at East. During this time, he went back to school himselfand earned his master ' s degree at Akron University in 1952. In 1957, he became assistant principal atThornton junior High and at the same time, became the first black man to hold an administrative position in the Akron school system. He left the school system in 1968 to become college relations manager at Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. After just one year, however, he returned to the school system at Margaret Park Elementary to become its principal, which he served as until 1972 when he changed to Goodyearjunior High ' s principal. One year later, in 1973, Mr. Chapman became building principal at his alma mater, Garfield High School. Mr. Chapman was also the Community Relations Director for WAKR, a member of St. Philip ' s Episcopal Church, and over thirty organizations throughout our community. During his eight and a half years at Garfield, he worked very hard to improve Garfield day after day. It seemed as if Garfield was Mr. Chapman and visa versa. Now that he is gone, Garfield goes on . . . but definitely with something missing. We can all fondly remember Mr. Chapman and his overwhelming Ram Spirit. Thank you Mr. Chapman for that something special you added to our lives. Rest in peace, dear friend. So it ' s the laughter we will remember, whenever we remember the way we were. 219 • M • A 1978 graduate of Garfield and valedictorian of her senior class, Ellen Pint was chosen as one of 32 United States college students to study in England for two years free of expense. Many hundreds of college students nationwide applied for the Rhodes Scholarship, but after all of the interviews had been conducted and the decisions had been made, Garfield ' s Ellen Pint found herself the recipient of this much cherished award. Ellen attributed part of her success in college to the fine background she received here at Garfield. She said that she has always been grateful for all of her teachers ' support and interest along with the support of her parents and family. We are truly proud of Ellen Pint and wish her nothing but the best. m 220 H • Wmston-Salem HUNTER PUBLISHING COMPANY • North Carolina Tim Ward, Canfield, Ohio tm?. 1 " ' ' " ■ A (fi m ' - A . 4 ' !
