'iw i 3 .5 5 All-City Defensive Back junior Tom Seibel Success is nothing new for football teams here at Garfield, and this year was no exception. The Golden Rams started off unusually slow, but Flossie and his staff pulled the boys together and came out with a spot in the Shaugnessy Playoffs. Over the years Flossie has employed a "grind ,em out" type of offensive, and this has brought a great deal of success to our teams. While compiling 101 wins against 47 losses and 6 ties, Coach Flossie has placed our teams in the annual Shaugnessy Playoffs 18 years in a row. Inspiring our team to virtually destroy the opposition after our slow start, Coach Flossie and his staff deserve a great deal of recognition from both the students and the team here at Garfield. john Travis Center ss Walter Shepherd End 55 john Kisbac and Jim Willen Tackles Mike McGrady End 56 Rick Bender Back X N6 XX Tex - uv' Bob Latson Center Mike johnson Back Steve Arshinkoff End Garfield Garfield Garfield Garfield Garfield Garfield Garfield Garfield Garfield 6 0 8 7 8 0 24 20 6 SEASON'S RECORD PLAYOFF East Hoban Kenmore Central Firestone Warren ,South North Kenmore 20 21 21 12 0 30 6 0 20 RESERVES Barb Popa, Lee Anne Faith, Becky Pilo, Jean Blinn, Karen Vereschack, Marna Green. H. S. Journalism Class "I think newspaper work is something that gets into your blood", Eaid Miss Nancy Yockey, Akron Beacon Journal Teen and Beauty Editor, 'n a speech to a Garfield high school journalism class, November 17. Miss Xockey spoke about some of the characteristics a good news- paperman must have. Among them are thoroughness and accuracy, sensitivity, stick-to-it-ive-ness, dedication, and the ability to spell. "You need to be aware of places and people," said Miss Yockey. Tracing her own steps back, Miss Yockey related her experiences leading up to her present position. She worked on her own high school's yearbook and newspaper staffs. After graduating from Kent State University, she worked on her father's small-town paper, and was a stewardess. After this she went into public relation and advertising and later got her job at The Beacon Journal where she has worked for over five years. Miss Yockey advised all prospec- tiv-e journalists to get a job on a small paper in which you can hold several positions at the same time. "Newspaper work is not all glam- orous," she added. She stated that sometimes you must do unpleasant stories, such as interviewing a widow, and must sometimes work long hours. Miss Yockey gets information for her teen column from representatives from the area high schools. These school reporters send her reports of news worthy happenings in their respective schools. "You learn something every day, you give of yourself to others - it's a great adventure," she said. The speech was followed by a question-answer period. "Crusade 0f Dimes" Surpasses Goal The "Crusade of Dimes" held in December by the Service L4 reached a booming height over the predicted goal. The final tally tc 518359, which was 3563.59 over the goal of S120 dollars. The remz money will be added to the fund to adopt a child next year. The League decided that the adopted child would be a boy fron of the three following countries: India, Brazil, Viet Nam. Kathy B1 member of the League, has been chosen to correspond with the child. The final word on the boy's age and past will not be known for at least another month. Since 1938, Americans have been sponsoring needy children by help- ing them find the love and care they deserve. For S120 a year or S10 a month, the child would re- ceive food, clothing, shelter, medi- cal care, education, religious in- struction, and a feeling of being wanted and needed. In return, the child's photograph, life history, and description of home and school are Glass Play SO0Ii Try-0uts Comin, Senior class play tryouts planned for February.
