Q- YN' 4 WWE , Dqfeat Kenmore, 22-0 Injury Riddled Rams Triumph A Year Late - But We Made It Despite injuries to key personnel the Garfield Golden Rams unleashed a devase tating ground attack to overwhelm the Kenmore Cardinals, 22-0, before 21,300 fans at the Rubber Bowl Thanksgiving moming. All the scoring occurred during the first two quarters of play. The first halt ieatur- ed outstanding defensive play by the mas- sive Ram line. Sharp offensive thrusts penetrated the Card goal line three out of the first four times the Rams had the hall. The Rams took the opening kickofl on their own 43 and marched all the way for the touchdown. Cliff Watson, Jon Bntash, and Ed. Bender handled the offensive chores. Ed Bender struck pay dirt from the three. The extra point attempt failed. After the kick the Ram defense forced the Cards to punt. The Rams marched to the Cards' six and had to give up the ball. However, the Cards fumbled and the Rams recovered on the fifteen. From this point the Rams drove to the three. Fullback Cliff Watson scored behind a wedge from the three yard line. A jump pass from Bob Pillltiero to Jim Wright was good for the extra points to make the score 14-0, Again'-the Ram defense forced the Cards to punt after the kick, and the Hams drove 57 yards Ior the third touchdown. HBALDACK Jun Butash ran his point total to 100 when he scored frame the one to climax this drive. Bender scored the extra points on a pow er play over tackle. The halt'-time score was Garfield 22. Kenmore 0. The Rams coasted in the second .half as Kenmore controlled the ball. But the Rams came up with the big defensive play when SOUVENIR ISSUE By Denny Sohar they needed it. Several times at .key mom- ents Carcl quarterback Sonny Litz gazed at the sky as he was set on the seat of his pants by a fired up Ram defense. The Cards managed to penetrate to the Ram sixteen once. but were thrown back to the 39 by a sterling defensive effort. Our South American "Amigos" arrived in Akron from Miami, Florida for a two weeks stay in our city, They were escorted to Garfield High School by bus where the Mayor of Akron, Mr. Erickson, our Superintendent of Schools, Martin Essex, and our Principal, Harlan Horton, were among guests at an official reception. Outside the school, our visitors were welcomed by the student body and the high school hand. After meeting with the host stu- dents and their parents, our South American friends were officially presented to the student body in an assembly in the school auditorium. Thus began a wonderful two weeks acquaintance - both for us and for our new found "Amigos". Mr Horton, Principal, was one of the persons in the crourl welcoming thc Amigos to Garfield High School. Martin Essex, Superintendent Akron Cily Schools The Garfield High School Band added a hit of music to the occasion. -123- y , 5, -SQ. 1 M b 1 V, 4 up if I-it is ,L O K D . . xv ff? Students at Garfield High School are continu- ously being exposed to the fine influences exerted by our Music Department. At times it seems as though "Music Fills the Air" during the entire school year - at assemblies, Christmas programs, athletic contests, special musical presentations and on other special occasions. We, at Garfield, are proud of all the accom- plishments achieved by our fellow students in this phase of our school life. The program permits such students as Iudy Batton, Vocalist of the Year, and Martin Curtis, Inslrumcntalist of the Year, to gain the recognition they so richly deserve. Much of the credit for our interest and appre- ciation for fine music, is due to the efforts of Mr. Robert Cole, our Music Director. It is he, who through his interest in students and the knowledge of his field, inspires us to greater effort. In appreciation, we would like to say, "Well done, Mr. Cole," for your untiring efforts in our behalf.
