GARFIELD STUDENT BODY GOVERNMENT HE chief purpose of the Student Body Government of the Garfield High School is to further the general welfare of the student body and to develop among the students individual responsibility, honesty, cooperation, and a spirit of service. All students who are regularly enrolled at Garfield High School are members of this organization and are entitled to its privileges. All instructors are advisory members. The officers are elected by the student body and hold position for twenty weeks, or until their successors have been elected. The principal and elected officers, together with presidents of various organizations, form the Board of Commissioners. The President, Boys' Senior Service Commissioner, Girls' Senior Service Commissioner, Boys' junior Service Commissioner, Girls' junior Service Commissioner, Head Yell Leader, and Commissioner of Publications are elected by the student body. No one is permitted to hold an office twice in succession except the school treasurer unless the Board of Commissioners and principals agree that there is a condition present to justify the exception. All candidates for any office must be on the eligibility list which is prepared by the faculty and the principals. Each candidate fills out an application blank for nom' ination. All candidates must have received recommended grades in at least two solids and must have passed in four solids during the term of their nomination. If the officers do not receive passing grades during their term of office they automatically lose their positions. A merit record of 9070 or above is demanded of all office hold' ers. They must have given fifteeen weeks of active and satisfactory service before nomination. They must also have on file an affidavit required by the Board of Ed' ucation and the Principals' Association of Los Angeles. The president and members of the Board of Commissioners are inaugurated in public assembly and take their oath of office, administered by the principal and for' mer president. Garfield has a check system to which the candidates must conform. The check system is for the purpose of eliminating the number of offices one student may hold and to distribute responsibilities among the students. No one may hold offices which total more than fifteen checks. The election of officers is held during the last five weeks of each semester. The exact date is set by the Board of Commissioners. The Student Council is one of the most important sections of the Student Body Government. It consists of the chief executive, and presidents of all home rooms. I1 is a medium through which the student body business may be presented for approval. Twentyone
