With a total record of 358,857 in sales, we set a new all-city record for high schools in the l956 magazine campaign. Through hard work and concerted effort on the part of each and everyone of us, we provided a substantial payment on new loand uniforms, added to our stage facilities, and provided coffee service for the faculty room. Colorful song and dance numbers, cleverly costumed, provided the en- tertainment for an evening long to be remembered in Garfields history. The book, written by Mrs. Frieda Bedwelly the music, played by the Garfield Dance Band, under the direction of Mr. Leslie Evingery the dances, planned and executed by Mrs. Boseann Baltesu Callahane all provided gay entertainment. Sis lavins and Kathy Geary, elected by the audience each evening, shared honors as Miss Starlight with Sis being crowned during the performance on Thusrday evening and Kathy on Friday evening. ' Other duties of the Council this year have been assistance with the registration of stu- dents in the fall and spring semesters, the supervision of the sale of savings stamps and bonds through the hornerooms on a weekly basis, the planning and scheduling of the en' tire assembly program of the school. Special projects this year included a Garfield "first", the celebration of Twirp Week which proved to be an outstanding success with the students. ln the line of school improvement, the Student Council Worked to secure the gold leafing of the letters on the front of the school. Also, plans were introduced for a permanent Clean- Up campaign for Garfield in which all clubs and organizations participate. Financially, the Varieties of 1957, the Student Council's only money-making project of the year, was a huge success: more money was realized for the treasury than ever before on this project, capably co-chairmaned by Nancy Fisher and Paty l-larton. Each year their first big project is th- planning of the Big and Little Sister Project a means of making all new girls coming to Garfield feel at home immediately. Parties are sponsored for the Big and Little Sisters at the beginning of each semester. Also the Iamboree an all-school mixer and get-acquainted party is sponsored by the Cabinet during the first week of the school year. As a special service to the faculty the girls sponsor a Christmas party where the faculty receix es sweets and treats during the day in the teachers room. A Friday in May finds the girls manning a booth in the lower hall at which cokes candy and cookies are sold. Chief among their activities is work with their afficilate organization, the Y. M. C. A., on the local and state levels. The HiAY boys contribute their share to the activities of the school- -this year they have provided several assembly programs and have purchased blinds for Room 28 in order that movies may be shown in that room. They also contribute to the community through dona- tions in various drives. Together with the Student Council they sponsor annually the Tulip Trek Memorial Day Assembly. Their projects are many in that they assist with worthy community projects at all the holiday seasons. For the school this year, they have provided several special assetnhlies, sponsored the annual Easter assembly, participated in Clean-Up 'Week by having the front of the buildinq painted. The qirls also sponsor the first formal social event of the season, the Harvest Moon Dance. ln May, they sponsor a Mothers' Day Tea at which their mothers are special quests. Speech contests consume a major portion ot the time ot the members: at these contests, the students compete in the various phases ot speech Work, oratory, humorous and dramatic declamation, poetry reading, radio, debate. This year several members attended the Purdue Student Legislative Conference held on the campus ot Purdue University. Members may also quality on the basis ot participation in speech work for membership in the National Forensic League, a national speech honorary: after they have become mem- bers, they may work further to earn various degrees to show their speech competence. Highlight oi the year this year was the recognition given the NFL chapter by the national organization as lndiana's outstanding chapter. Gregory Bell, '48 Greg displays the form which won him interna tional honors. The honor and distinction of being Terre Haute's first winner of an Olympic gold-medal in individual sports competition came this year in the 1956 Olympics at Melbourne, Australia, to Gregory Bell, graduate of Garfield High School with the Class of 1948. Greg, now a student at Indiana University, Won his medal in the broad jumping event where he came close to breaking the all-time world's record for this event held by lesse Owens. Greg came to us to speak at an assembly before leaving for Australiag and upon his re- turn, he was given a Hero's welcome when the motorcade taking him to the City Hall for city-wide honors came past Garfield High School.
