Ghis was the gear that a new high school was being built in the north end of 'G erre '3'laute, a school that was to be Garfield 'Ql'ligh. It was in this gear that the facultg, students, parents, and patrons of Garfield began to look for a brand new emblem to go with their brand new school. Chen theg saw Eddie, a little purple eagle, onlg a few dags old, with onlg a verg few feathers, sitting in a huge nest with his parents, CDr. and CD1-s. Bald Eagle. At once it was decided that Eddie was the one who should be the emblem for Garfield. for Eddie was goung and new like the school, he had a lot of spirit, in time he would grow larger and larger, and better and better, and, last of all, he would make historg and soar to the heights of all mankind. O3r. and CDr. 'Bald Eagle seemed to sense at once what a great thing it was for Eddie to be the emblem of Garfield and what an honor was being bestowed upon their son. Although theg hated to part with him, theg thought in later gears theg would be proud of all his great accomplishments. So Eddie Eagle was adopted bg Garfield 'fl-ligh School for its emblem. Even Eddie , goung though he was, seemed to realize his importance and made a vow that, while he reigned as emblem of Garfield, it would be one of the great high schools in historg. cflow, after fortg-two g ears , Eddie is being introduced to gou in p erso n for the first time and he has ch osen to make his entrance in the pages of the 1954 Benedictus. Eddie, we introduce gou to the students of Garfield. . , . . . . Sag 7-lello! Mrs. Alu-rs's particular lield ol interest is the laeilities for the girls and the general appearance of the main building. Mr. Frew is the one who is on hand at all evening activities-rehearsals, dances, mixers, revues, and shows. Mr. Church keeps us warm in the winter and, in the summer, keeps our campus a thing ol beauty to be admired by all. Mr. liicks's province is the gym where he is ever-present at basketball games and practice sessions. These people deserve our respect and admiration lor the beautiful job they do in keepf ing our building and grounds one of the most attractive, il not THE most attractive, in the city. EN GLE, Mary Lucretia Lou , Y-Teens, Sergeant-ab Arms. 1954 was a year of memorable activities, from the jolly, lighthearted, festive lamboree', through the sad, heart-warming farewell assembly. We. like the seniors of other years, had distinctive apparel-yellow cords, dirty White bucks, loafers, and saddles, pegged slacks, colorful collars, and, of course, eashmeres',. We were distinctive as to week-end activities, too. The show and Wassels, the show and Wassels, the show and Wassels, and for the datcless there was the Youth Center or Our music was new and different, too, Bee-Bop, jazz, Boogie, or Swing. The Student Council, under the sponsorship of Miss Grace DeVaney, is one of the most important functioning organizations in the school. ln all their work during the year they strive to better conditions for students, faculty, and janitors in the school-to provide added facilities for all groups-and to act as a representative organization for all the students in the school. The memhership, composed of ten class-elected representatives and one representative from each home- room, acts at all times as a service organization. The first important project of the year was the sponsorship of the mechanics of the magazine drive. The Council scheduled the weekly assembly programs for the entire year and provided the students with a Varied program of events in the auditorium and gymnasium on Fridays. Outstanding among their achievements and one of which they are most proud is that they were instru- mental in securing for the girls full-length lockers-the first in the history of the school. These were provided by the City Schools and they have added much to the appearance of our halls as well as furnishing pro- tection for belongings. The janitors' room downstairs was completely refurnished and redecorated through the efforts of the Council members. This year the Council was represented on the Quad-Hi Council of the city of Terre Haute-a group which sponsored a district convention held at State High School. Council memhers also attended the Indiana Association of Student Councils convention held at Bosse High School in Evansville. Last Sum- mer president Ted Kelley atended the convention of the National Association held in Portland, Oregon. The Council's one money-making project, The Varieties of I954li, proved a huge success this year through the efforts of Chairman Elizabeth Beldon and her committee. Garfield vs. Wiley-the earliest Turkey Day game on record books found the Eagles going home at the short end of a I3-0 score. A fleet band of Wiley backs and a touchdown which the referees didn't see as such on the part of Garfield spelled defeat for the Eagles. Bad things seemed to come in groups as Garfield lost one that really hurt as they succumbed to the Clinton Wildcats by the score of I2-7. All rightee-time for a change . . . as the liagles Norris Geary moved into Greenfield eager for victory after three setbacks in a row. And their wishes came true as they came out on the top side of a score of I9-7. The Purple's Choice played their next game with a rugged band of Maroons from Robinson, west of the border over Illini way. And this was becoming a habit as we again defeated them, zo-7. This game also proved the linemen could score as Guard Gene Wilson picked up a loose fumble and dashed for pay dirt. Sinnett Disney Hauser Ballinger Waugh Kehrt Leaving a good taste in our mouths, Garfield sewed up things 'ls they clipped the tails of the Brazil Red Devils with an overwhelming 37-14 victory to Wind up the regular schedule.
