THE DEANS' CABINET, composed of four seniors, three juniors, two sophomores, and one freshman, acts as the representative of all the girls in Garfield in their relations with their Dean of Girls, Miss DeVaney. The most valuable contribution of the group to the welfare of Garfield is the sponsoring of the Big and Little Sister movement where every girl entering Garfield for the first time is given a Big Sister who acts as her guide and counselor during the first difficult days in a new school situation. Main activities of the Cabinet this year have been the sponsoring of the Fall and January Big and Little Sister Parties, the Jamboree, Sweeties' Day fthe proceeds from which are used for a scholarship to Indiana State Teachers Collegej. As a special project this year, the Cabinet, accompanied by Miss DeVaney, spent a week-end in Chicago, seeing the sights, shop- ping and attending the shows. Turkey Day dawned bitter cold with a blanket of snow. The stands were dotted with a few loyal fans who braved the elements to watch the holiday classic. The opponents rolled back the blanket of snow. sharpened their cleats, and dug in. The contest was a see- saw struggle the first quarter, but Wiley flashed red in the Eagles' faces the second period and carried a commanding half time lead to the warmth of the dressing room. Most of the spectators deserted the stadium for a warm spot beside the radio at home, but those few who stayed were well rewarded. In the third period, Dean Nicoson flashed off on the run and reached the safety of the end zone. George Miller measured off the distance to the goal posts. and put Garfield ahead 7-6 with a beautiful kick that split the uprights. Garfield clung to its one-point lead with grim desperation until the final gun. The Purple Eagles had truly beaten this oldest rival with the traditional Spirit of 7-6. The lironze Turkey came home to roost. Football FRED BLADE. better known as f'Rabbit. The Eagles opened their season with a spirited 20-14 victory over the Linton Miners in the first home game of the season at Memorial Stadium. The following week saw frenzied fans watching a photo-iinishl' at Sullivan when the Eagles scored in the closing seconds to win 13-12. A complete re- versal of form on the next Friday-Brazil defeated the Eagles on a last-second counter, 13-7. In a hotly contested, wild fray featured by a safety on the part of each team, the Purple Eagles and the Clinton Wildcats battled to a 14-14 tie at Clinton. In the first City Series encounter, Garfield bowed to Gerstmeyer's Black Cats, later crowned City Champs, by a score of 21-12. Robinson took Garfield, 46-14. 'Nuff said! In a game featured by mud, mud, more mud, and a little OJ rain, the Dischinger-coached men were downed by Bloomington, 19-7. In a day game played at Hobart, the team from up north took the long end of a 13-0 count, Garfield's only scoreless game. But the final game-Garfield, 7 - Wiley, 6-closed a brilliant chapter in Garfield gridiron history and the Bronze Turkey resting proudly in the trophy case is proof of the fact that the Spirit of 7-6 still reigns supreme. Choir HE high point for the Garfield Choir this year was the purchase of new purple nylon robes with white satin stoles. Wo1'king intensely in their annual magazine sale, members of the Choir earned the money to buy their new garb. and to say that they are proud is putting it mildly. With Miss Nell Duncan as Director. the Choir has attained a high degree of musical perfection this year. Their appearances have included programs for several local churches. for assemblies at school, including the Christmas candlelight service. and for service clubs. Also the Choir sang in the District Music Festival at Sullivan, at the meeting of the Indiana State Teachers As- sociation in Indianapolis, at January and June Baccalaureate, and Commence- ment services.
