Your future lies there, sometimes success, sometimes failure, but you are always moving on through new doors of knowledge, faith, and achievement. There are doors you see every day and take for granted, never realizing the opportunities that may lie behind them. Some doors may be passed through easily, but these are the doors of little value. Others present the challenge' of hard work, but when once passed through, you will realize the fulfillment of your dreams. l H955 GARFIELD HIGH SCHOOL sEA1'rLE, wAsHlNcToN Allll0W A dvixor MISS MARIE C. This high school, however, completely disproves the insinu- ation. Garfield faculty members usually manopolize the adult seating section during various sporting events. I TEBIIIGII CUUNCIL NCE A MONTH, the main office of the Seattle public schools becomes u scene of buzzing activity as the delegates of Inter-High Council convene. The worries of homework ond sports' rivalries are forgotten by the students as they puzzle over the common problems of law-enforcement, school sportsmanship, and troffic safety. With officers ond executive committee members from all eight high schools, the Inter- High Council is almost entirely student-planned and run. The council is divided into several committees, which work on separate proiects before reporting their shining accomplishments to the whole lnter-High Council. The most outstanding proiect of the council is the annual All-City song ond yell leaders' conference. , lm' 'MAN , INTER-HIGH REPORTS ro sruoenr couNciL Yralh: and Safety Committee AIKO KOBAYASHI PHIL FRINK AND JOHN MAXEY, Advisor Law Enforcement Committee Sportmanship Committee QUIET, STUDENT COUNCIL AT WORKI STUDE T COUNCIL ACH Friday, the hour from l2:00 to lz0O is a time of great activity in Mr. Maxey's room. The chairs sprout many more legs, arms and elbows dangle on the table tops, and numerous brows furrow in thought. lt is a scene of deepest concentration, it is student council meeting time. The purpose of this vital body is to control the overall student activity program. Many ideas for school proiects first come into the light of day during student council meetings. After discussing all of them thoroughly, the members cf the council decide which to present to the student body. Order reigns supreme at student council, and during meetings these iunior parliamen- tarians execute their duties with dignity and efficiency. I TEBCLUB CIIUNCIL HE main aim of the lnterclub Council is to publicize club proiects and encour- age student participation in them. Composed of a representative from every school club, the council meets once each month to discuss general plans and ideas. The main proiect thus far in the short history of the council has been to provide interest booths for display on Back-to-School Night. Early in November, sounds of tlying hammers and crunching saws echoed from room 231, as student handymen constructed the display booths. Then, the proiect was taken over by the lnterclub Council, whose members hurriedly turned 231 into a room of crepe paper, glittering lights, and displays of all sorts and descriptions. . The proiect was quite successful in that most parents left Bock-to-School Night, knowing not only how Johnny is doing but how Johnny's club is developing Johnny. John Maxoy, Advisor, Midori Tanobo. These premature Bernhardts and Barrymores, with faces resplendent with grease paint and lines carefully memorized, parade to and fro before the footlights. Meanwhile, throughout the auditorium, friends and proud parents nod in approval as they gaze fondly upon the many stars of the show. On the other hand, a student may choose to present his creative talent in a less spectacular fashion. The fellow who had previously buried his thoughts beneath chemistry formulas, may sometime be impelled to express his inner love for sweet peas in springtime. Thus, after several weeks of pounding the Underwood, his finished product may finally appear in one of GarfieId's literary publications. At this time, the Selected Chorus, lead by the rhymical arms of Mr. Cook, prepared for the Operetta. This year the vocaliling was dedicated to the melodies of three Broadway shows: The Student Prince , Brigadoon , and Oklahoma . Choir members discarded the blue robe and starched white collar ond costumed themselves in the apparel of the Heidelburger, Highlander, and American cowpoke. LOG-A-BHYTHMS T WAS a chilly March evening when the S.S. James A. disembarked from her moorings. As the mighty vessel plowed through the high ocean waves, a seaworthy mariner began his evening iaunt about the deck. Assured that all was well with Old lronsides, the seaclog settled down upon a handy life preserver and proceeded to thumb through the James A's log. Thus, on March l7, 18, and 19, Garfield's i955 Funfest was introduced to enthusiastic spectators. The student-studded production based its theme upon the record of various oceanic encounters, as found in the lag ofa fabulous ship. The iolly mariner peered into the pages of past history, and discovered a throat-splitting tale of blood- thirsty pirates who attacked the S.S. James A. while she sailed one of the Seven Seas. However, the nautical record also contained o collection of current earth-shaking events. A few months previous to the Funfest, the popular commentator, Edward R. Mumble, was broadcasting his television show aboard this famous steamship. Here, on attempt was made to set the world's record for deep-sea diving. Sev- eral waterfloving individuals risked their lives to roam the depths in a bathosphere, an invention of mod- ern-day scientists. When the S.S. James A. finally pulled up anchor, she had recorded another adventure of extraordinary events in her log. This trio, working in assembly-line fashion, literally made the Funfest. First, the all- important planning was done by the members of the main committee, who combined wits to produce and develop a seaworthy theme - Lag-A-Rhythms. Then, construction of the S.S. James A. was navigated through the energetic efforts of the stage crew, whose mem- bers constructed the various props which added to Gar'HeId's oceanic atmosphere. The other contributing committee, composed entirely of youthful make-up artists, had the pleas- ant duty of applying greasepaint and mascara to the faces of the many eager members of our all-star cast. The room itself resembles any other classroom in Garfield, but behind its shuttered windows a staff works furiously. Arrow is one class in which individuality is not insisted upon, and conferences are always in order. The staff members usually work in small groups, in corners of the room, at long tables, or over the advisor's desk. Their buzz sessions include such perintent matters as whether or not to use a tomato soup colored cover on the annual, how on earth to stick to a photographic schedule when it rains outside, or how the staff can make more and spend less money. Sometimes, especially around the time of a deadline, the staff can not only be seen but heard in action. With seemingly dozens of proiects in progress, the sounds range from audible hum to energetic babble as the typists plink out long lists of material, the sportswriters shuffle through stacks of action pictures, and the copy editors rack their brains and the- saureses for adiectives. The Arrow makes its public appearance on Purple White Day, when it is eagerly pounced upon by an admiring student body. Then it is carried around by almost every student at Garfield, being eagerly exchanged and scribbled in, until by the end of the school term, every Arrow owner is wished enough good luck to last a lifetime. ACH DAY, at Garfield High School, when the hands of the various time pieces approach 2:15 p.m., sixth period bursts into existence. In Room 210 a unique order of business is at hand. Here, seated at long, yellow tables are the members of the Pen staff. These individuals, aided only by a editor and faculty advisor, spend the remaining fifty minutes buried in a maelstrom of manuscripts. The Pen, appearing semi-annually, is truly Garfield's creative masterpiece. Gathered between the bindings of this publication are the poems, essays, and miniature novels of many young quill-drivers. After creating phrases of great promise, these students may deposit their compositions in the mailbox adiacent to Room 210 or within the grey folders which decorate language arts classes. Since the hidden incentive of the Garfield Pen is to develop the writing technique of the high school student, nothing so pleases a youthful author as to read his personal contribution in a widely circulated magazine. Garfield and Lincoln were declared City Co-Champions, and both teams went to the taur- nament. Lincoln was defeated in the quarter-finals by O'Dea, and finished in seventh place. Three Garfield players received All-City recognition. They were Doug Smart, First Team, Dave Holden, Second Team, and Lenny Peterson, Honorable Mention. Smart set a new individual scoring record for City League play with 374 points, breaking the old mark by 53. John Smith and Bob Krisologo led the league in hitting, which was o big factor in our success. The pace got hotter and we sagged to fourth place, but not without some very good showings. Ira Oakes and Autrey Glass were chosen All-City, and Oakes and Warren Holtz played in the City vs. State Game. ZOOM! . . . Boasting a predominantly iunior lineup the Bulldogs showed their teeth from the start. Defying the opinions of the experts, the Garfield squad ended up the first round of play in second place, winning four games while losing but two. The team in first place was Cleveland whom the Bull- dogs never had the satisfaction of playing. ln the second half of the season diffi- culties arose which must occasionally hinder any good team, and Garfield wound up the season in a four-way tie for fourth place. There will be eight lettermen returning for the '55 campaign which points to a bright future in baseball for Garfield. 70 ERNIE DZUIHCK AL P EMaLEroN Jorm smlm Aunrev cuss In cmcss uma com cumin lnspirolional Aucnr AHCHY Sharlrlop Firx! With six returning lettermen, the Bulldog squad, under the watchful eye of coach John Maxey, stormed through the season downing challenger after challenger. At the completion of the regular season's ploy, the Pups were at the top of the stack, having won all seven of their scheduled matches. Garfield had won its first tennis championship in I2 years. Having worked with these bays since they were Sophomores, l found that they were all especially talented in tennis skill, stated coach Maxey. The boys were good competitors, good sports, and clean cut fellows. Following the regular season came the All-City matches. Larry Newman, Garfield High, brought back the singles crown, to add further to a success- ful season. SEAS0N9S STANDINGS W. l. With too few returning lettermen, the squad was lacking experience. However, expe- rience is not all that makes a team. The '54 squad romped onto the field of battle as a highly spirited team. Organization and teomwark made up for what was lacking. Although the squad did not win the city championship it will be regarded as one of the finest Gar- field teams to enter the field of competition. ln the words of Coach Swede Lindquist, lf spirit could win first places, Garfield would have been on top ofthe league. The boys, however, made a fair showing, finishing fifth in the relay carnival and dropping to seventh in the all-city meet. The true measurement of a team is not how many meets they win or lose, but in the sportsmanship and spirit displayed. Proof of the quality of the competition among the city linksmen was found in the score required for qualification in the All-City meet. A maximum count of 76 strokes for sixteen holes was required in '54 while the year previous 86 was good enough. Garfield's Bruce McDonald placed fourth in the All-City meet. Since entering Garfield they have filled out stacks and stacks of informative cards for the office, the counselor, the home room record, the nurse, and on an on ad infinitum. Cards of all colors, sizes and varieties have felt the marks of their pencils as they filled in information, name, roll, program of classes, and finally graduation date, June, 1955. Once it seemed doubtful that the far-off date would ever arrive, but now it is here. Their senior year has been their biggest, and they have celebrated it by reviving that long dormant spirit of old, the Spirit of Garfield. Of course they've worked hard, but the seniors have spent a fair amount of this last year's time immersed in extra proiects. Their time-consuming activities have ranged in importance from making a big night of the senior prom to iust enioying life at Garfield, feeling important, being seniors.
