The growth of Garfleld Hlgh School from a small ob scure educational lnstltutlon to one of clty wlde pres hge and achievement was long and arduous In arrlval Among those who made vltal and posrtlve contrlbu tlons to that growth was Mr Harry B Cunningham who untll thus past season was Garfleld Boys Advlser 'IK When Garfleld then known as East Hugh School flrst opened Its portals on September 7 1920 M Cunningham was a member of the faculty Durmg that lnltlol year Mr Cunningham not only became Adviser of the Boys Club but also coached the flrst Purple and Whlte football eleven Whlle at Garfleld he also lnstructed shop and art courses however his para mount Interest was In the promotion and welfare of youth For many years he was active ln the Boy Scouts program and was chlef gulde at Mount Ralnler as well as directing head of several boys camps 41 Mr Cun nmgham s lnterest ln boys dld not cease In his offlclal capacltles for he met each and every one on a com mon ground-a ground characterized by rare under standing and candor a ground wlth unyleldlng lntol erance for wrong doing Hls advlce and assistance were sought by all When the heavy war tlme program was lmtlated many extra burdens were added to his dutles but he carrled out these responslbllltles courageously and competently whether ln the fleld of employment or helping boys prepare for the services 41 To Mr Harry B Cunnmgham who has so ably served hrs school and country and who rlchly deserves the re turns of retlrement we proudly offer thns page as a trlbute . 23:2-Ir! . 5 W- x 51512 L ' 1 ' - . a2'2g.g4 1 pf 555:52 ff' - 1 , -' Q . Of the many dlstlngulshed lndrvlduals who have helped to establlsh and expand the ageless and exemplary tradltlons at Garfleld Hlgh School, none IS more de servlng of recognltlon and honor than Mr Leon H Brlgham, who for twenty three years was head coach of football basketball and track and also Instructor In history and physlcal educatlon 41 Throughout his career as athlete educator and coach, Mr Brigham mamtalned standards of the highest order stand ards to whrch he demanded uncompromrsmg adher ence Mr Brigham came to Garfield from Iowa Um versrty Durmg hrs tume here he comprled a record of achievements whlch can be paralleled by only a few other coaches during a slmllar span Eight champion shrps In football three ln basketball, and seven rn track constltute what the record books proclalm as a real subject matter for athletic hrstory 41 lt was rn the fall of 1942 however that he made one of hrs most notable contrlbutlons to the development of youth who were antlclpatlng servrce on forelgn battle fields Wrth courage and foresight he helped to carry frtness 41 In the summer of 1944 Mr Brlgham was promoted to a capaclty formally titled Drrector of Inter School and Intramural Athletrcs for Junior and Senlor Hugh Schools of Seattle Wlth hrs attalnlng of thus positron the result has been a progressive better ment of all athletlc endeavors and the revrtalrzatlon of sports In the clty In recognltron of the services and contrrbutrons he has rendered unselflshly and capably we proudly salute Mr Leon H Brigham 'o 'Q 'n Po' 5'3., :ag 22: , bi' 9:5 . g., Q Q . n . - 23:54 . . .
