This year's class made the necesary adjustments with great facility. Although ineligible for membership in the Honor Society, many earned sufHa cient points to entitle them to be listed on both the Honor and Service Honor Rolls. A few also acquired the distinction of having their literary attempts re- corded in the MPen. Strides toward a better student government, were instituted by a new plan whereby Freshman roll representatives, rather than the entire class, attended meetings. The satisfactory functioning of this arrangement promises to make it a permanent one. Athletics, too, were not neglected by the yearlings, who eagerly answered the coach's call to football, basketball, baseball, and track. With this nucleus acquired in all school activities, the Freshmen have built up a strong foundation for the years to follow. ,fit fa... A 5 .aff MARY lp. Likewise, the Sophomore, having made his plans in his freshman year, prepares himself for future leadership as an Upperclassman. TOM SMITH I' RRY JOHNSTON Vice-l'resn1t-iii II,-YI' SU'I'lIl1RI.AYXIU - 31 liL'l'lllHlWl,lNli Sap OWZOVZS Having gained the introduction to student govern- ment, scholarship, and athletics in their first year, the Sophomores developed and enlarged their abilities along these lines. Comprehension of school pride resulted from active participation in Boys' and Girls' Club work. While com- panionship vvas gained in such clubs as the Stamp, Open Forum, and Debate. Prominent, both in number and achievement, were the Second Year students in the Honor Society and Honor Roll. Others, through school activities won points for the Service Roll. Even on the gridiron and maple court, the Sopho- mores displayed their characteristic enthusiasm and energy. The third team, composed almost entirely of Second Yearmen, won the city championship in football and basketball. Intramural sports were also supported by the Sophomores. Garlields chorus and band found numerous members of this class in their ranks. Three persons were act man- agers in this year's highly successful Funfest perform- ance. Socially, too, the Sophomores Were outstanding. On St. Patricks Day, they sponsored a dance honoring the Irish Saint. Having thus inished two active years as Lovverclass- men, the Sophomores are now prepared to assume their duties as Upperclassmen. .ll .XX .XKRON .XIWXIMHQ .XIIYISUIQ IRONT ROXV: Fred Andrews, Alice Abramr, Evelyn Anderson. Upon the outcome of this trial depends the fitness of the plane for commercial trans- portation. Just so, the Junior, trained for three years, stands ready for responsible participa- tion in school government. By the faithful application of this knowledge, the Class of l94O has completed a year of successful activities. Numbered among committee chairmen of the Boys' and Ciirls' Clubs were many Third Year students. Seven turned out for debate, while others showed comparable interest in various other organizations. Literary-minded ones constituted the majority of Pen contributors, while twenty-four of those journalistically-inclined composed the two All-American Messenger staffs. Scholastically, the Juniors ranked high with over one hun- dred of its members in the Honor Society. In athletics, the Juniors played prominent roles, with lettermen in every major and minor sport. Commemorating the Sesquicentennial of the inauguration of Cieorge Wash- ington, several Juniors presented an historical sketch depicting the trial of the first days of the Constitution. With these diversified accomplishments, the Juniors conidently look for- ward to their last year. Garield may be justly proud of her Third Year students. .rash- I liek - am? As leaders, the Seniors capably filled the oiiices of the Boys' and Girls' Clubs and the personnel of the Honor Society. As performers, the graduates took major parts in the Funfest, Opera, and Senior Night. Editorships of the three student publications. namely. the Messenger. i'Arrow. and Pen, were also filled by Seniors. Even while Juniors. members of this class distinguished themselves by placing high in the various declamation contests. In keeping with the Garfield tradition of championship teams, the football squad, composed for the most part of Seniors, won the city championship: thereby. permanently retaining the Michigan Trophy. Other sports, including skiing, numbered many enthusiasts among the Seniors. Vklith this foundation, the Class of '39 leaves Garfield to undertake the heavf ier responsibilities of life. Scholastic points are determined as follows: an A represents four points: a three: a two: and a one. Major and minor service points may be earned by deserving students with the approval of the faculty. In order to receive a one-bar pin, a student must have a total of 24 points after two semesters of endeavor: a two-bar pin represents 50 points gained in four semesters of study. A student having 78 points at the end of six semesters is entitled to a goldseal pin. This becomes his permanent possession if he has earned 108 points by the time he is graduated. This year the Honor Society has a membership of 328 of which 151 are gold seal members, IOZ are two-bar members and l29 one-bar members. GOLD SEAL. FEBRUARY, 1938 FRONT ROXV: H. Nakamura. The theme for the student talent show, an important one, was decided by the faculty committee. Increasing numbers of book reviews, sketches, short stories, and poems have resulted in larger, more varied issues. To some, The Pen was the initial step to contributions to the Washing- ton State high school anthology of poetry. To others, it was the introduc- tion to 'AlVlessenger or Arrow work. QUILI- AND SCROLL From an embryonic be- ginning of two charter members, the Porter chap- ter of Quill and Scroll has grown in four years to an organization of twenty-six active journalists.
