KNIOLA ROBERT L. Ross MICHAEL T. JAFFRIN CARL P. GUTHRIE The members ofthe Garfield Heights Board of Education congratulate the members of the PIONEER Staff on this interesting and attractive Yearbook. This book, we are confident, will be preserved and treasured for many years to come because of the documentary record which it contains of your high school days. It will serve to remind you of the many good times which you have had as high school students. The members of your Board are, at all times, sincerely cognizant of the important responsi- bilities conferred upon them by the electorate of this school district. The American public school system is g'overned, in a large measure, by the ideal of equal opportunity for all children through similar educational advantages. Boards of Education, therefore, have a well dehned responsibility in serving all of the children of all the people, irrespective of the economic, social, religious, or political affiliations of their parents. The members of your Board, in their deliberative actions, have attempted-first and foremost-to recognize this obligation by approving only those administrative policies and procedures which they feel will best con- tribute to the general welfare of all pupils. The Board members join with me in recording our appreciation for the many fine contribu- tions which have been made by our teaching staff, for the cooperation of the student body, and for the intelligent support and understanding that has been evidenced by the people of our school district. We have no desire other than that of serving you and your parents in the best possible way. f Respectfully submitted, MICHAEL T. In March of the same year she was chosen for one of the leading roles in "Sun Bonnet Sue." Some months later she opened the showboat by singing the "Ferry Boat Serenade." She and the Showboat being inseparable ever since. Eleanor was a member of the Choral Club, and consequently took part in the Annual Christmas Pageant under the direction of Miss Mayer. She also sang with Dick Vidd's Orchestra. As a culmi- nation of her High School career, she was elected Pioneer Queen. Pioneer King RICHARD HART Dick started his high school career at Wilber Wright Junior High. West Technical, Berea, then Garfield are the remaining strings of his school career. His ninth grade experience on a six man championship football team served as a background for Varsity Football in Senior High. Although he did not participate in the other sports, he wrote of them in both the Mirror and Pioneer and was the announcer at all Sport contests. He tried to pro- mote school spirit by printing Booster badges. He also spent long hours on W.B.O.E. listening post. In the later part of his senior year Dick was elected Pioneer King. Quite a jump! But here's how it all happened. We started out with these thirty-three "charter members" in the Garfield Heights Elementary School: Emma Gaeto, Elroy Smith, Bill Stone, Carol Urban, Florence Anossee, Dan Samerdyke, Bob Graber, Bob Kucera, Richard Brich, Isom Atalia, Jon Borowicz, Mildred Duckworth, Jean Fleming, Rollyn Manke Jack Mannu, Calvin Peterson, Lillian Pugely, Nuncio Scebbi, Charles Turner, Madeline Vocila, Carol Hruby, Ronald Brown, James Mika, Jean Kocar, Carolyn Knowles, Dolores Lau, Carole Porter, Shirley Pike, Robert Ochocki, Mildred Januska, Bernadine Lawicki, Jacqueline Kessler, and Virginia Ratica. In the second grade we acquired AliceJagus from Harvard School, and by now we were starting to pester our teachers. Many prophesied the title we later got of "Teacher Scourgersf' Judy Cundra popped in during the third year of our life from Warren. Phyllis Baker from St. Peter and Paul, Helen Ryan from West Denison, and Leona Zdanowicz from St. Mary's, joined our select group in the fourth grade. In the fifth along came Ida May Steiner from Holy Name, Ralph Styblo from Woodland Hills, and Lois Kohler from Benjamin Franklin. By this time we were going strong, and the Elementary Staff was glad that we had but one more year over there. But before we left the little red building, Jane Zaremba skipped in from Moses Cleveland. In the first year in the High School Building we acquired many new morons. From Moses Cleveland came John Povejsil and Lucy Petrecco. Park Knoll sent us the Iapello Sisters, Bess and Josephine, as well as Lenore Stobbe, Marcia Stanley came from Holy Name, George Chaloupka from Barkwill, Kinsman sent Ruby Denlinger with a sigh of relief, while George Millburn got here from Miles. Grant gave us Ruth Olson CNO not U. S. Grantb, Miles Park got rid of Ralph Matt. Finally, Lottie Kaminski got here from Maple Leaf. Now our Class had climbed to fifty-four. No one bothered to get here during the eighth grade, but in the ninth the rains came. St. Peter and Paul, perennial helpmates, gave us Joe Rutkowski, Dan Volek, Eleanor Wagaski, Richard Gruszka, Virginia Baranski, Harriet Stankiewicz, Frank Novy,John Presby, Sabine Gorzelancyk, Richard Matejka, Ed Kuzma, Ralph Cenny, Ralph Crosby, Peter Dodosh, Ed Kosey, Ed Skura, Florence Zajkowski, and Frank Vitoj. Roosevelt also kicked a few our way: Fred Woody, Vern Nazarek, Laura Diehl, Frank Traviglia, Gabriel Szabo, Bob Lockhart, Robert Vicha, Wallie Kalski, Bob Riley, and Marvin Dress. Maple Leaf gave us Jean Angarano, John Opala, Louis Parasiliti, Frances Augustine, Nathalie Owczarek, Eleanor Svoboda, Tony Malone, Eileen McKinley, and Jean Rossi. From St. John's came Viola Bode, Shirley Godenswager, Irene Bohning, and Dorothy Bode. St. Therese sent its representatives .Janice Cunningham, Mary Hart, Pat Paul, Al Slowick, and Rosemary Caldwell. Laurence Boyer came from Holy Name,Jack Lewis from A. B. Hart, Casimer Kin walked in from St. Stanislaus, Dolores Brozowski came from Immaculate I-Ieart, and Jean Flanigan got here from Audubon. Gerry Kayder came all the way from Ashland just to go to Garfield. In the tenth grade our class had its reputation firmly established, all the citizens swelled our treasury with their tribute. Strong additions and reinforcements were in the form of Dorothy Muir, from Darlington, Pa.,James Kubat rushed from Nathan Hale, Tommy McGowan arrived from Latin, Mary Ellen Gulick came from Ursuline, while Lucille Przbylski transferred from A. B. Hart. In the eleventh, all the faculty were wheezing but thought they would last two more years. But George Vajda from John Adams, Rose Fabio fromJohn Hay, and Ray Kalinowski and Ester Haas from South almost changed their minds for them. Four more came in the twelfth and final year to bring it up to 119 in our class. They were Margaret Marks from Jane Addams, Glen Willen from Lakewood, Nola Wrentmore from Shaw, and Wilbur Mantkey arrived from John Adams. This is our history, except for all the bad parts which we left out. But there wasn't too much of that, or- why did all those teachers quit and go into nice, quiet factories! 7 ,s s 3 HY. sf sm! Km? Dan was the only letterman on the team and he also took the duties of Captain. The "B" team lost but one game during the regular season. They met Euclid Shore for the championship, but were defeated in a tough game. My we were a bashful lot of freshmen. Even the bravest were almost too shy to even dance. With the help of a huge bonhre, the informal way we ate our hot dogs and pop, we became quite well acquainted at our freshmen picnic. Of course by the time the coveted first prom came the next year, one could tell that there had been a lot of progress made and that the classroom ro- mances had flourished well. How pretty the girls looked in their toe-hiding dresses. Remember the huge valentine we walked through to get to the dance floor. At our annual class picnic this year everyone joined in a game of base- ball, teachers and students alike. All this was only a step on the path of our high school days. We skipped gayly into our Junior Prom. Jack-o-lanterns, corn stalks and goblins greeted us everywhere. Remember how stiff we were as we spoke to each other. Remember how the girls wore something red to let the school know we werejuniors? ' We reached the height of our Junior year when we gave the Seniors the traditional junior-Senior prom. At that prom the class of '43 visited the South Sea Islands. Remember the palm trees and the large romantic moon? The soft music and dancing made the picture complete. The finale to this was our own Senior Prom. The Gym was converted into a huge circus tent with its balloons gayly floating about. Then the Juniors presented us with a prom just a month before we graduated. We now had almost reached the end of our school career. The Climax to all our social events was class night. The class of '43 was at its gayest then. We made the evening pleasant with our shockingly ignor- ant antics and gayety. Of course you remember all the fun we had at football games. And how about the basketball games played against the faculty when we were seniors. One can hardly forget those. Yes, the class of '43 did have fun traveling the path of high school life. And it was not without regret when we reached the end of our high school days. .,, .1 .,!.v - - ' - ' Correspondence 5 , -5, fo - -XV X en X. 'A' DA TE T0 942 NF V .
