lliiliilllill lliiiilllllllilllllll For the first game of the I946-1947 basketball season, the Glenwood De- mons traveled to Grand lunction to play the Tigers, State Champions of the pref vious year. Because the Glenwood team lacked experience and height, they came out on the short end of a 37-21 score. This game, however, gave the Demons in- valuable training for the grueling season ahead. yAftcr a Christmas vacation and very little practice, the Demor. quintet again took to the road to meet the Central Warriors, a merger of the Fruitvale Vikings and Central Warriors, in their second conference game at Clifton. This game proved successful for the Demons as they downed the Warriors Zl-13 in a hard-fought battle Definitely weakened by the absence of two first stringers, Schutte and Long, the Red Devils fell before a powerful Fruita aggregation to the tune of 35-ZZ. The Wildcats utilized their height and completely dominated both backboards while Glenwood had to rely on the fast break to score. Dale Patterson, Fruita cen- ter, led all scorers with Z3 points. The next week the Demons tangled with their perennial foes, the Rifle Bears, in a game which meant a lot to both teams, as it would determine the proba- ble third place representative from the Colorado Valley Conference to the Delta Tournament. The Red and White proved to be the better team as they downed the Bears 31-19. Amichaux of Glenwood garnered l2 pointsg Hannahan of Rifle made 8. The Demons finished the Hrst round of play in undisputed possession of third place in conference standings by defeating tne Palisade Bulldogs 44-ll in an exciting game played at Palisade. ln the first half of the following game the Glenwood five had hopes of win- ning from Grand junction, but midway in the second half the Tigers began to toll. The final score was 33-13. The Demons next met an improved Central team but managed to retain their hold on third place by a 35-17 triumph. Tben the Red and White handed the second place Fruita Wildcats a 29-22 defeat in a thrill-packed overtime game in which John Schutte dunked in 8 points in the extra period. Schutte led all scorers with a total of 14 points. Meeting the Rifle Bears in the crucial game deciding which team would go to Delta, the Glenwood five again showed their prowess lay conquering the BruinS 46-Z3 ina clean, hardffought battlein which both teams played the smoothest ball either had previously exhibited. This win clinched a spot for the Demons in the tournament at Delta. As they finished the season. the Demons tied for second place with Frnita by defeating Palisade Bulldogs 56-19. Led by the 17 point contribution of Grant Moorhead, Glenwood sub, the Red Devils completely dominated the scoring. The playoff game between Fruita and Glenwood was at Grand Valley. Sparked by Lawrence Leonardi, back after a year in the U. S. Navy, the Demons trounced the Blue and White from Fruita by a 40-22 score Racking up 12 points, i'Peck Leonzrdi was high scorer. His expert ball handling enabled the Glenwood, ites to coast on their wide margin after the third stanza. Despite a slow starr, the Demon quintet climaxed their season by endirg in second place in the conference.

Getrs DELTA TOURNAMENT Tne Demons knocked the lid off the '47 Delta Tournament by downing the Fraig Bulldogs 42-30 in the first game of the tournament john Schutte racked up 22 points to lead his team to an impressive win over a hard-fighting Craig team who gave the Glenwood quintet plenty of trouble throughout the game. Both teams were evenly matched and the victor could not be determined until the final gun sounded However, the Glenwoodites pulled ahead enough at tne end to win hv a wider margin than was expected. For the fourth time in the same season the Red Devils met the Fruita Wild- cats, this time in the semifinals of the Delta Tournament. The winner would play for the chamionship the next night. Fruita had downed a powerful team from laonia to win their way into tha semifinal gime. The Demons copped this game as they eked out a 35-51 win over their opponents to assure them a place in Stare Tournament, This game proved to be the best game of the tournament in the opinion of fiios r who watched the closely fought contest Snapping a 7-game winning streak of the Demons, the Grand junction Tigers won a hard fought 43-29 hattle over the Glenwood five for champion- ship honors. Coming up strong in the second half, the Red and Wlwite over- came a I6 point half-time deficit to come within 6 points of the Bengals, until the final minutes ofthe game when the Tigers dunlced in 8 fast points to win the vhampionshxp two years ranning. The Tigers were prohahly as hot on th.-ir Sl'lUl'S2h2lI'lV'll'11C in the ve-ir. hut the Demons fought hard and gave the Orange and Black no end of trouhle throughout the game. Immediately following this game. trophies were given and the All-Tourna- ment Teams were named. john Schutte, unanimous choice, and Lawrence Leon- 3.-di were both picked on the first team.
