I'll smile and slowly say, Kids, l'll tell you a story, Of the youth of yesterday. We didn't have your rocket cars And other modern things. We didn'r visit other stars Of the orbit's outer ring. But let me tell you we had fun. To the old school we brought fame. Glenwood High Cshe feared no onel Shell win most every game. Now you kids have thought machines. You don't have to go to school. During the first hal ttf our high school carter. the last two bloody years of the war were being fought. And while we were busily pursuing the joys of youthful pleasure. the tivo difficult years of making thf peace followed. Fifty of us entered as freshmen, September 7, I943. lim Vlfeaver was elect- ed presideutg Harry Drake, vice-president, Alfreda Mann, secretary, Douglas Cross, treasuierg john Shultz, student bt dy treasurer, and John laul Schutte, stu- dent body representative Mrs. Almgren was our Freshman class sponsor. Forty- three of the original fifty returned to complete another year of education at G. C. H S. Mrs. Starp was our sponsor that year and our officers were jim Weaver, again prestdentg Alfreda Mann. vicefpre-iuentg C trleton Hubbard secretaryg John Paul Schutt -, treasurer and student body secretary, and lohn Shultz, student body representative. The class of '47 contributed seven of the first eleven on the '46-47' football squad and two members on the second string. The team this year won the Yam- pa Valley Championship and lost the Westerii Slope Class B Championship by only one point to Hotchkiss. Eight of the first eleven in basketball were of the class of 47 and this team went to the Denver tournament. This team was the first in fifteen years that Glenwood sent to state tournament. They were elimi- nated only after they had reached the semi-final bracket. ln Delta, this team took second place in the conference. The B squad, captained by Tommy Simp- son, won the consolation at the De Beque tournament. John Paul Schutte, brilliant senior forward, was chosen for the all state second team The senior class gave their last dramatic performance in a very cleverly done three-act play, Here Comes Charlie, which attracted one of the largest audi- ences that ever attznded a class play in Glenwood. The play was given Decem- ber 6 under the capable direction of Mrs. Stapp. On May second, clever decorations adorned the assembly in honor of the annual Sneak day. A bus was chartered to Leadville and Climax. Class night was presented May 16 with the theme of bringing a Memory book to life. Eight of the original kindergarten class,Grant Moorhead, lim Weaver, John Paul Schutte, Harry McMillan,Jim Mulkey, Carleton Hubbard, Tommy Simpson, Barbara Duffy, and Paula Hutchings, graduated. After a hard rain the slick field practically throttled a running game Oak Creek scored in the first quarter, and the Red Devils were unable to retali- ate until the last minutes ofthe final period when a pass from Leonardi to Weaver clicked for six points. Sininger's running attempt for the point was successful. Game number two pitted the Demons against the Craig Bulldogs in t-he first home game of the season. Showing power and coordination, the home-town eleven ran roughshod over the perennial league leader, the Craig Bulldogs. lames Mulkev led the scoring with two T. D. ' s , while Weaver and Davies each racked up six points The second tilt held on the local gridiron was also a victory for the Demons as they came out on the long end of a I9-O count , thoroughly routing the Steam- boat Sailors, even though they proved the toughest foe yet encountered. Relying chiefly on the power provided by the single-wing formation, the Demons pushed to another win as they downed the power-laden Meeker Cowboys I9-O . The Red Devils often found themselves with their backs to the goal because of the superb kickingot the Meeker backs, but were finally able to pull themselves out of tlfe hole and went on to rack up their third win in four starts. The Reo and White downed the Hayden Tigers 35-O in the final conference fray of the Qeason. Scoring four of their five touchdowns in the first half, the Red Devils were able to coast to victory and championship. Playing their annual Armistice Dax' Classic on the Rifle field, the Bears up' set the Demons to put the first defeat on the Glenwood record, ZO-O. Being un- able to click on either passing or running plays. the Demons found themselves trying to slow down the Rifle attack. Rifle's scores came as a result of long plays which were well executed and proved verv effective. Possessing extreme patience and a thorough knowledge of football, Mr. Stubler was able to get full co-operation from the boys. He was well-liked and ad- mired by the squad. Any merit the club received is due to his coaching ability. NORMAN SIMILLION - Buzz , manager ofthe '46' football team, proved by his faithfulness and sense of duty to be one of the best managers of recent years. PAUL AMICHAUX - Ami was end man on the Demons' left side. His defensive qualities and running earned him the respect of teammates and opponents alike. He played nearly all of every game. Next year Paul might easily become one of the best wingmen in the conference. GENE BROCKWAY -One of this year's lettering juniors, Brockway proved himself an asset to the Demon squad. BILL DAVlES - When Donegan wasn't smashing the opposition, Bill was. He drew his man out of position many times on clever blocks and feints. Bill's alertness in covering a fumble back of the goal line cost Craig six points. CHARLES DEVER - Chuck started in the snap- back role this fall with no centering experience. By the end of the season, however, he had greatly improved and was playing excellent ball. He backed up the line on defense, nailing the ball-carriers the few times they plowed through the line. ERNEST DONEGAN - Bud, alternating at left tackle with Bill Davies, lived up to preseason expecta- tions. He used his weight to humble the enemy's line in fierce smashes that could not be stopped. CLEYO FERRIN -- Cleyo, diminutive wingback, ex- celled in a number of fields, those of pass receiving, tackling. and elusive riinn ng. He played rough foot' ball with the rest of the team and came out unscathed and ready for more. He was out all last fall despite an injured knee. MAX GETTS- Max understudied Peck at fullback and did a good job or it. He hit hard and was seldom stopped without a gain. He also suhbed at quateihack when needed, giving the Demons a potent backfield strength at all positions. LAVURENCE LEONARDI - Peck , returned Navy veteran, was one ofthe most valuable men on the squad. He bucked up the line and hit off tackle like a college fullback and threw up an impenetrable web at his de- fense backer-up position. ln his final game against Hotchkiss, Peck' really blossomed out as the best full- back in these parts. CLIFFGRD LONG - Hampered in early season with injuries, uKip improved steadily and showed a lot of promise after midseason. He played the intricate wing back slot with ease. He especially stood out in pass- running, having a nearly perfect record, IGHN MEADGR - Meador, transfer student from Salida, ably filled in as substitute end. GRANT MGGRHEAD - Grant held dowr. the right tackle spot throughout ll11fS't?2lI'. He was one ol the defensive standouts of then? Mules , smashing up plays consistently. Few teams ran plays thrcugh Grant with any success, and his ability to open up holes in the enemy defense was well proved. JAMES MULKEY - Mulk was the high scorer this year as he racked up eight touchdowns. He galloped goalward either on the end of passes or carrying the ball on dazzling runs. Although he was at his best when Glenwood had the ball, he was anything but weak on defense. Quarterback on the single wing, he also stood out in the blocking role. BRAD PRETTI - Demon reserve pivotman, Brad could be depended upon to play a consistent game at key position. As a line backer he was noted for his alactity in smashing his opponents' aerial attempts and for his fearlessness in plugging holes. ERNEST ROWE - Reserve end, Ernie showed great ability in both his defensive and offensive assignments, His fearless blocking and aggerssive tackling were the scourge of the Demons' opponents. JOHN PAUL SCHUTTE - john played his first year ot' football this year and became one of the best reserve backs on the Demon team. He could pass, run, and kick with equal ability. His punting at times was the best on the team. ELMER SELMAN - Fudd ably held down right tackle spot on Demon reserves in spite of an injured knee which handicapped him this season. EARL SIDENER -- Filling in as guard, Sidener put his weight to good use in plugging holes or opening them. He is a likely prospect for ncxt year's squad. . TOMMY SIMPSON - Rosie gave one of the best showings at iight guard that has been seen in Glen- wood in many ayear. Playing the running guard po' sition, he had some difficult blocking assignments. He played hard, clean ball games and deserves the plaudit of the students. I I . ROLLIN SININGER - The signalfcalling tailback, Stinky , led the team to its heights. He set up many scores with his brilliant open field running and bullet like passes. He was the dread ofthe conference, being a triple threat man with his passing, kicking, and run- ning bewildering all opposition. ARCH IE URQU HA RT- Arch was the mainspring of the Demon line. On the defense he was the imf movable object and on offense was the irresistible force. He opened wide holes in the opponents' lines for the backs, and he held his position so that not a single score was made through his sector during the entire season, a feat which is noteworthy of our praise. DON VANDERHOOF - During his tirst season with the Demons, this able sophomore gave promise of his worth to come. Taking over substitute quarterback, he showed the makings ofa great back. jllvl WEAVER-This senior topped off his final season with a sterling performance at right-end post. Glue- fingered catches and clean tackles were Weave's trademarks. Because the Glenwood team lacked experience and height, they came out on the short end of a 37-21 score. This game, however, gave the Demons in- valuable training for the grueling season ahead. yAftcr a Christmas vacation and very little practice, the Demor. quintet again took to the road to meet the Central Warriors, a merger of the Fruitvale Vikings and Central Warriors, in their second conference game at Clifton. This game proved successful for the Demons as they downed the Warriors Zl-13 in a hard-fought battle Definitely weakened by the absence of two first stringers, Schutte and Long, the Red Devils fell before a powerful Fruita aggregation to the tune of 35-ZZ. The Wildcats utilized their height and completely dominated both backboards while Glenwood had to rely on the fast break to score. Dale Patterson, Fruita cen- ter, led all scorers with Z3 points. The next week the Demons tangled with their perennial foes, the Rifle Bears, in a game which meant a lot to both teams, as it would determine the proba- ble third place representative from the Colorado Valley Conference to the Delta Tournament. The Red and White proved to be the better team as they downed the Bears 31-19. Amichaux of Glenwood garnered l2 pointsg Hannahan of Rifle made 8. The Demons finished the Hrst round of play in undisputed possession of third place in conference standings by defeating tne Palisade Bulldogs 44-ll in an exciting game played at Palisade. ln the first half of the following game the Glenwood five had hopes of win- ning from Grand junction, but midway in the second half the Tigers began to toll. The final score was 33-13. The Demons next met an improved Central team but managed to retain their hold on third place by a 35-17 triumph. For the fourth time in the same season the Red Devils met the Fruita Wild- cats, this time in the semifinals of the Delta Tournament. The winner would play for the chamionship the next night. Immediately following this game. trophies were given and the All-Tourna- ment Teams were named. john Schutte, unanimous choice, and Lawrence Leon- 3.-di were both picked on the first team. COACH STUBLER - Under his able guidance the Red Devils went to the semi-finals at Denver. a feat that no other Garfield County High School squad has been able to accomplish. Mr. Stubler was able tr- get full co-operation from the boys be- cause he was so well liked and admired by the team. b JACK FLYNN - lack, manager ofthe '47 basket' ball team proved to be faithful to his duties and to the team. PAUL AMICHAUX- This lanky junior earned a place on the first string by virtue of his ac- curacy under the basket. The team's rebound artist, cleared the backboards with the ease of a much taller player. His brilliant defensive work combined with his offensive ability will make him a threat to the League's other centers next year. CLEYO FERRIN - Ferrin's speed and agility made it possible for him to steal the ball from many opponents and in turrt cash it in for two points on a fast break. Also Cleyo's ability to handle the ball and his eye for any kind of shot allowed him to be a potential scorer against any foe. Cleyo is one of the seven seniors on the first ten to graduate this spring. MAX GETTS - Max proved to be a valuable asset to this year's aggregation as his height enaf bled him to control either backboard as well as break up many plays by seemingly pulling passes from the air and thereby giving the Demons con- trol of the bali again. Iunior's graduation in 0 ' . , Slow shahxwxgjurie will mer? a greaggrss to next year s squad. 'f C ul JY -'X ., l 9 Mia ae gif' CARLE ON HUBBARD - Thisflashy Demon 'reserve showed unequaled form and skill. Hub was 'wigaiwtwvgwflo F' iw ' gf, 0, 'lr A0 F H WF l ,if Wg an excellent set shot and an unrivaled defensive star. He played consistently throughout the sea' son to earn his letter and the praise ofthe school. Z1 LAWRENCE LEONIARDI - Peck , after an absence of a year from G. C. H. S. , returned to become one of the spearheads of the Demon at- tack. His ability to come through with the goods at th: right time was plainly seen not only in the Fruita game in Delta where he garnered the winning basket but in numerous other games where his ability to keep cool was an incentive for the other members of the team. Peck will be sorely missed by next year's team. CLIFFDRD LONG - Kip was one of the two juniors to secure a spot cn this year's first five. His quick actions and continuous presence of mind enabled him to break up many of his oppo- nents' plays, which would have otherwise been good for a basket, as well as pass the ball to set up one of his team-mates. Kip's'l return next year will prove invaluable to the team. GRANT MOORHEAD - Grant was one of the most capable substitutes on the Demon squad 'his year as he anly proved by racking up 17 points against the Palisade Bulldogs in the final confer- ence tray ofthe season. His ability to gather in re- laounds as well as put in lay-up shots proved ri great menace to every foe he played against. MARCUS NCRDBERG - Showing great pro- mise during his first season, this able sophomore exhibited his skill in every department ofthe game. A natural shot and a skillful ball-han.ller, the Kid proved that all he lacked was experi- ence. His return next year will be an asset for the '48 squad. JOHN SVHUTTE - Playing his first vear of bt ll St-hutte showed ability that earned berths for him on AllrXX t-stern Slope and All-State teams. He was high scorer for the season with an average of 10 4 Points per game for twenty games. His sharp passing and deadly accuracy in shooting made him a valuable offensive player, but he was not to he our done in the field of defense. His agility and speed made him the scourge of cpponents. john will be sorely missed next year. lllvl WEAVER - Weaver was the work- horse of this year's squad. Although not a conf sistent high scorer, lim could be depended upon to drop a bucket in a tight spot. Playing his third year of first-string ball, he was the force that kept the team cool. ln recognition of his ability he was selected basketball captain for the '47 squad. His spot will be hard to fill next year' DENVER TOURNAMENT Again playing the.opening game of the tournament the Demons downed a . -. .
