Start- ing with a total of eleven freshmen, the team began with a big win over a NCAA Division II, West Georgia. A slow start and a sluggish offense was the key to our loss to Newberry. The Fightin ' Bulldogs got back on track again with wins over Livingstone, Lenoir-Rhyne, and Catawba before their youth began to show. Gardner-Webb lost its next five games and ended the season with a reasonable 4-6 record. Things look much brighter for the Bulldogs next year! With the return of Walter Hardnett and Tony Campbell in the backfield, along with the good freshmen and with the addition of six new transfer linemen, the offen- sive line looks much stronger. The defense did not lose any players and should be as strong next year as they were this year. THE 1984-85 GWC RUNNIN ' BULLDOGS 1 9 8 4 1 9 8 G W c M E N ' S B A S K E T B A L L NO. Rick Kinney, a 66 " strong forward from Smyrna, Georgia, is a four year starter and an honorable mention All-District 26 performer. Ben Davis, the premiere shooting gu ard in the District, is a three year starter at 6 ' 3 " and is the leading scorer returning from last year ' s team. Ben was named to the WBTV Classic and Dixie Classic All-Tourney teams last year and is a very explosive offensive performer that will contend for the player of the year in District 26 this year. Other top veterans include Ron Hargrave. 6 ' 6 " . Ron is the strongest player on the team and will be vital around the basketball on offense and defense. Grady Martin, 6 ' 6 " . received some playing time last year and will be counted on to make a major contribution this year. Grady has the best pure athletic ability on the team and is considered the best defensive player. Duvall McCleskey a 6 ' 6 " wing who started the last half of the season last year will be counted on heavily this year. He is the best offensive rebounder on the team and has made a great deal of improvement on the defensive end also. A pleasant surprise is Brad Smith, a 6 ' 4 " freshman performer who plays both point and wing positions. In early scrimmages, he proved to be a very versatile player for the Bulldogs. Aaron Patterson, a very coachable, rugged guard has the potential to give the Bulldogs good leadership. Aaron is a real competitor andshoulddoa good job at the point for the Dogs. Roger Norris is the most aggressive Player on the team and always makes things happen. Roger isa6 ' 5 " senior who will be very valuable to the young Bulldog squad. Two very valuable players. Jeff Binns, 6 ' 6 " post, and Matt Gibson, 6 ' 0 " point guard will become eligible for the second term. Jeff was an All-District player his freshman year and Matt has made a great deal of progress and will be a big help for the team. Other dependable reserves that will be counted on are: Tom Bridges, a 6 ' 1 " wing; Cliff Rush, a 6 ' 4 " wing; and Joey Renfro, a 6 ' 8 " post. 40 IVe Love Those Runnin ' Dogs! THE LADY BULLDOGS NO. Last year ' s team finished with a 17-21 record (including junior colleges) and 9-7 in District 26 Tournament play. This represented the best record in seven years at the college. The Bulldogs lost only one senior from last year ' s team. The 1985 spring team figures to be a great improvement over last year with a number of key recruits supplementing the current talent. The leading returning hitters are Junior Greg Eller. .351; Senior Neal Cargile, .340; Junior Gary Cox, .325; and Sopho- more Tommy Turner, .326. Building and improving still remains the theme with the Gardner-Webb men ' s tennis program. Their fall schedule proved to be a rebuilding and improvement season. The GWC Women ' s team is an eight member team. Becky Blackburn plays number 1 , Brenda Blackburn at number 2, Anna Thomasson ranks at number 3, Lisa Jo Robertson plays number 4, Melissa Franzone will be number 5, and Beth Miller at number 6. New members include Ellen Kirby, Beth Kirk, Helen Dodd, and Beverly Wilson. These girls are working out and will be moving into the top six positions with time and experience. These girls are coached by Mrs. Lillian Collins. Four of the top six players will be graduating this year. Outstanding senior Becky Blackburn has shown much loyalty and determination during her four years in competition. Brenda Blackburn plays number two singles and proves to be a strong partner at number one doubles with Becky Blackburn; her serve and volley game is the strongest on the team. Lisa Jo Robertson has been on the team for four years. She works very hard and has shown much improvement during 1 984-85. We expect to see her continue this spring and win some matches at number four. Beth Miller, who fights hard in both singles and doubles, will also graduate in May. Anna Thomasson, our only junior, will continue to be the most steady and reliable player. She leads the team during the 1984-85 season with the best win-loss record. 1 9 8 4 1 9 8 5 G W M E N S T E N N I S v Mr ■ " 1 w. 53 1 9 8 5 G W c M E N G O L F T E A M GOLF: First Row — Tracy Conner.
