In 1903 it was decided that there would be the estab- lishment of a high school " where the young . . . could have the best possible educational advantage under distinctive Christian influence. " 1905 brought the selection of the location as Boiling Springs, and on December 2, 1905, the Boiling Springs High School was in- corporated. On September 3, 1928, Boil- ing Springs Junior College opened for its first session with the Reverend James Blaine Davis as its president. AS time progressed the school grew bigger, with new buildings. The E. B. Hamrick Building, the oldest building on the Gardner-Webb campus was erected in 1940, and dedicated in 1943 in honor of the late E. B. Hamrick. IN 1942, the Governor of North Carolina began to help the college For this, the college was renamed Gardner-Webb College in honor of the late O. Gardner, Sr. and his late wife, Mrs. Fay Webb Gardner, and their families. THE O. Max Gardner music building was completed during the year 1948. THE Webb Administration Building was completed in the fall of 1960. It houses the administration offices including president, dean, registrar, and business manager. The building was built in honor of the late Mr. O. Max Gardner (Fay il H,„t ., V,„cH ' Jt«JJ-„ ' •11 ■ir Ml ill ■■1 1 -: (11 Uf 111 ill m III III lU III Ul i t « -.1 Jlk . Dover Campus Center is a two story air conditioned building, containing over 400,000 square feet and was completed in 1966. It is named in honor of Mr. Charles I. Dover of Shelby, a long-time friend and benefactor of Gardner-Webb College. THE J. R. Dover, Jr. Memorial Chapel was completed in September of 1 972. This graceful and inspiring structure com- pletes the formal entrance to the cam- pus. This building was made possible through the gifts of the family of the Shelby industrialist for whom it is named. IN 1943 another president was elected to serve Gardner-Webb College. He was Philip Lovin Elliott. He served the col- lege well and made many important im- provements where much money was raised and many new buildings were erected. IN 1962, President-elect Eugene Poston took the oath of office and responsibili- ties. He started off right and with the theme, " To fulfill a dream, " President Poston has worked hard and now he can say his dream has been fulfilled. In 1971, in the month of December, Gardner- Webb College became the Senior Col- lege that she has always hoped to be. Many things are changing and there are coming many more improvements. SO there is always a time for reflections. Erecting of a memorial In dedication .... In Charlotte on February 14, 1973, Dr. Cash and Mrs. Cash aided not only Gardner-Webb, but also the vi orld in his production of The Gospel Road. " The film is on the life and teachings of Christ. It was sponsored as a world premier by Gardner-Webb College. Why did Dr. Cash and Mrs. Cash choose Gardner-Webb as a sponsor? Dr. Cash said, because they have done so much for me, I wanted to do somthing for them. " He felt that it was time Gard- ner-Webb was recognized as an out- standing Christian College. Not only did Dr. Johnny Cash and Mrs. June Carter Cash honor Gardner-Webb, but they helped many young men and women who otherwise would not be able to at- tend Gardner-Webb in the next coming years. All the proceedings of the film went to the Gardner-Webb Student Aid Program. Now at this time, we would like to ex- tend to Dr. and Mrs. Cash our warmest and deepest appreciation for their love, dedication to our Lord, and their dedi- cation to Gardner-Webb, " Thank You " . We want them to know that for all time, Gardner-Webb is their home. 30 ... Dr. Cash speaks on be- half of Gardner-Webb Col- lege, beside him, his wife June Carter Cash . We have used up the possibilities inherent in the youth of our nation: the new start in a new place with new vision and new hope. We have gone far toward using up our topsoils and our forests and many of our other natural resources. We have come, or we are coming fast, to the end of what we were given. The good possibilities that may lie ahead are only those that we will make ourselves, by a wiser and more generous and more exacting use of what we have left. Our history is not only the fund of insoiring events that in our obsessive self-congratula- tion we have made it out to be — it is also the record of a tragic and shameful wasting of the land and of human possibility. It isn ' t just tfie breaks you get But how well do you play? Stop and look the whole team over You ' ve to some pretty rugged men. If you work them all together. There is no goal you can ' t defend. Your fullback ' s name is COURAGE, You need him in this game. For TRUTH and FAITH you halfbacks There ' ll be many a yard to gain. Your quarterback is very fast Though small and hard to see So watch when he gets the ball. His name is OPPORTUNITY. At right end there is RELIGION He ' s stood the test of time. At left end there is BROTHERHOOD whose efforts is always fine. Your right tackle ' is AMBITION Don ' t ever let his shirk. Left tackle is a husky man You ' ll find his name is WORK. Your left guard is HUMOR He is important to your team. While HONOR is playing right guard Your game is always clean. If LOVE plays at the center spot and does his very best Then you shall have a winning team and really know success The other team is strong. Son, GREED, ENVY, HATRED, and DEFEAT Are four strong backs you ' ll have to beat. DISCOURAGEMENT and FALSEHOOD are the big boys on the end. You ' ll have to tackle hard, my boy When you meet us with these men. SELFISHNESS and JEALOUSY, you ' ll find them playing guard. While CARLESSNESS and a man Called WASTE Are tackles you can ' t disregard. There ' s one more man you ' ll have to watch. All through the game, my dear. He ' s playing center for this team I ' m told his name is FEAR. This game will not be easy: There ' ll be struggle, there ' ll be strife. To score the winning touchdown For its played in the BOWL OF LIFE. Stand behind your team. Son. There ' ll be many who will cheer. Whether the leadership be vested in a man or in a manufactured product, emulation and envy are ever at work. In art, in literature, in music, in industry, the reward and the punishment are always the same. The reward is widespread recognition; the punish- ment, fierce denial and detraction. When a man ' s work becomes a standard for the whole world, it also becomes a target for the shafts of the envious few. If his work be merely mediocre, he will be left severely along — if he achieves a master- piece, it will set a million tongues a- wagging. Jealousy does not protrude its forked tongue at the artist who produces a commonplace painting. Whatsoever you write, or paint, or play, or sing, or build, no one will strive to surpass or to slander you, unless your work be stamped with the seal of genius. Long, long after a great work or a good work has been done, those who are disappointed or envious continue to cry out that it cannot be done. Spiteful little voices in the domain of art were raised against our own Whistler as a mountebank, long after the big world had acclaimed him its greatest artistic genius. Multitudes flocked to Bayreuth to worship at the musical shrine of Wagner, while the little group of those whom he had dethroned and displaced argued angrily that he was no musician at all. The little world continued to protest that Fulton could never build a steamboat, while the big world flocked to the river banks to see his boat steam by. The leader is assailed because he is a leader, and the effort to equal him is merely added proof of that leadership. Failing to equal or to excel, the follower seeks to depre- ciate and to destroy — but only con- firms once more the superiority of that which he strives to supplant. There is nothing new in this. It is as old as the world and as old as the human passions — envy, fear, greed, ambition, and the desire to surpass. And it all avails nothing. If the leader truly leads, he remains — the leader. Master-poet, master-painter, master- workman, each in his turn is assailed, and each holds his laurels through the ages. That which is good or great makes itself known, no matter how loud the clamor of denial. That which deserves to live — lives. Theodore F. MacManus 139 The 1972 edition of the Gardner- Webb Football squad ended with a disappointing two wins against nine losses. Coach George Litton is still re- building his squad with young players that will sure excite the fans in the years to come. The loss of eight seniors will not badly hurt the coaching staff as they prepare for the 1973 season, but faces such as Ray Hannon, Woody Fish, Mike Cherry, Heath Livingston, Tony Mauldin, Coleman Hunt, Hal Davis, and George Foster will be greatly missed. Quarterback Ray Hannon was the leading offensive player for the Bulldogs with 1460 yards and 24 points. The leading rusher was John Mallory with 453 yards and 213 yards passing with a combined six touchdown total. Ken Reid was the leading pass receiver. Reid caught 45 passes for 784 yards and two touchdowns. Leading the defense was Free Safety Richard Wofford. Wofford intercepted eight passes along with being the leading punt returner. Wofford had 12 returns for 118 yards for 9.8 average. Eddie Mc- Kinney led in kickoff returns with 16 returns for 270 yards and a 16.9 average. Other defense leaders were Woody Fish, George Foster, Billy Warnock, and William Peppers with Mike (Moto) Stokes, Richard Gris- som, and Wayner Henderson also doing a fine job. There will be a new season in 1973 with seasoned players out- standing lettermen, and highly re- garded freshmen. 140 BASKETBALL ... The 1972-73 edition of the Gardner- Webb College Bulldog Basketball has been very ex- citing. Compiling at present a 19-8 record through the end of the regular season, the cagers are now waiting upon word of whether they will make the District 26 tournament and another chance at the title with a second trip to Kansas City Nationals. Leading the young Bulldogs were Sophomore trans- fer Jim Blanks with 24 points a game and 12 rebounds, High School All-American John Drew with a 23 point average and returnee Billy Ellis with 14 points a game. The eager squad had only three seniors with all three playing major roles in the success of the Bulldogs this year. Ken Napier started at the point guard and averaged four points per game. Al Graves came on strong in mid-season and finished with a 12 point a game average. Len Dugger, the only other senior, played in a reserve role and did a tremendous job tor Coach Eddie Holbrooks men. Holbrook surpassed a milestone this year with 200 victories in his eight seasons as head Bulldog. Holbrook is also assisted by Ron Hooper, Dennis DeSanctis, and head recruiter Roger Banks. With much of the present talent returning for next year ' s squad Bulldog Basketball will have another exiting year in Bost Gymnasium. . . . TRACK . . . Track, under the leadership of Coach Ken Sanford, is on the way up at Gardner-Webb Col- lege. Coach Sanford is very optimistic about the up- coming 1973 season. He stated, " We have the toughest track schedule in GW ' s history, but I think we have the personnel needed to have a good season. " The squad is composed mainly of football and bas- ketball players. The distance and middle distance events should be a strong point this year, with runners such as Ronnie Rash, Denny Collins, David Laws, and Charles Dukes competing. Jan Williams and John Smith in the 440 and John IVIallory and Eddie McKinney in the dashes should help make the " Running Dogs " excel in 1973. The Dogs should be strong in the field events with seasoned performers such as Ken Reid, in the long jump, and Jody Anthony in the high jump returning. Great things are expected from Bob Bolick in the shot put, while Gene Ligon and Karl Bradshaw should pro- vide needed points in the Javelin throw. Coach Sanford noted that track was not a glamour sport and the members only reward was self pride and accomplishment. Track demands much hard work, sac- rifice, and devotion. . . . GOLF . . . Golf has always had great success and tradition at Gardner-Webb College. Led by All-Amer- ican Terry Florence the GW links men to the District 26 championship and a fifth place finish in the NAIA National Finals in 1971. Last year saw the Dog golfers finish a strong second in District 26. The man behind all this success and tradition is Dr. Garland Allen. Dr. Allen expects the 1973 golf team to continue this great success and tradition. Coach Allen expects the team to be greatly improved over last year because of the seasoned returnees and a highly-trouted transfer from Furman University. Veterans returning from last year are Mike Stewart, John Kyle, Rock Hill, Jack Moore, Kim Washburn, Bob Florence, the younger brother of Terry Florence. The highly trouted transfer is John Mattson, a Junior from Yorkstown, Va. Mattson, who recently played in the prestigious U.S. Amateur championships should prove to be a great player for Coach Allen. John Kirkham, Bill Sherman, Jimmy Hun- suck, and Frank Howell should also play a great part in the golfers ' championships aspirations. The team ' s home course is Riverbend Acres and this is where the District 26 championships will be played. If they win here it is then we will be on our way to the NAIA Nationals again. 1973 should certainly turn out to be a banner year for the Bulldog golfers. . . . BASEBALL ... The 1972 Bulldog Baseball club did an outstanding job last Spring. Pitcher Bob Lail proved to be one of the best players on the field. The 1973 Baseball Club should be as good as last year because many of the team members are turning. Such players as Bobby Jacobs, David Hefner, Ricky Wofford, Gary Robinson, and David Williams. New to the Bulldog lineup is Tim Huff, pitcher from Winston-Salem, David Rodgers, and Charles Greene. Gardner-Webb looks forward to the season this year and we are hoping for a winning one as we had last year. Coach Bryson stated that his record was 18-5, and that he was pleased with it. Whether afar over land and sea, or close at your door may the duty be. It calls for your service full and free! Take your place. Somewhere the world has bitter tears. Your smile might dry; Somewhere the burden of doubts and fears. The hopeless sigh, There are steps that falter, weary, For the strong, brave aim they vainly seek — Will you pass them " by on the journey bleak? Take your place. Somewhere the world has a desert spot. Your toil might till, Somewhere a life whose love- less lot. Your love might fill. If the place that waits be high or low, Question not, cry not — onward go! Clinton, S C 211 There once stood a row of great tall oak trees that were strong and their roots extended far into the ground. They stood In a small clearing on a hill in a wooded area. There was one of these tall oaks that was taller, greener, and provided shade and homes for many of the ani- mals. Here under the large oak many cnildren played each day. One day a terrible stream passed thru the small area and the large oak tree crashed to the ground. The woods stood silent and when the children discovered the large oak was gone they cried. Against the big beautiful rainbow sky there was a vacant spot that was once filled by this large oak. But now the oak was gone and only a vacant space remained. This story can be used to describe many great people. But one remains in my mind, IVIr. Wayne DeHart. Many of you did not know Mr. DeHart and if you had you would understand what honor and greatness really was. Mr. DeHart loved Gardner-Webb more than any man I know. He loved the Bulldogs and backed them at almost every game they played. Mr. DeHart not only backed the Bull dog that he believed in so greatly, but he also stressed Christ, the Man who had helped him so many times. His strong Christian faith made him a unique man, outstanding in his ways. Mr. DeHart was a man that saw goodness in every one. He never felt that he was better than anyone. Much could be said about Mr. DeHart. He was a man, a friend and one who could be depended on. He was a man with a dynamic personality and he had a purpose. That purpose was to help those who were less fortunate than he, to aid by giving love and friendship. Yes, it is true a great man did pass by Gard- ner-Webb, he will not be forgotten for all his help and kind understanding. Sort of like the large oak tree a vacant spot has been left by a fine man, Mr. Wayne DeHart. AND I LOVE TODAY The final page has been finished, and along with it the sealing of the memories that you and I have of the past year at Gardner-Webb Col- lege. My thanks go especially to fVlr. Bill Boyd, my advisor and to whom the 1973 Anchor is dedicated, for the advice he gave me during the long and tiring hours of work on the year- book; to Mr. Ron Norman of Keys Printing Company, my publications advisor, for the trips to Gardner-Webb he made in helping me; to the faculty and staff who gave me advice and en- couragement; to my staff, Ann, Judy, Scott, John, Vicki, Wanda, Sam, Donna, Wayne, and Gary; Also I would like to thank Mr. David Webb and Mrs. Mildred Poston for all their help and kind understanding during the times we worked so long and hard, and with the Miss Anchor Contest. I would like at this time to extend a special thanks to Ann for all of her help because she had much understanding and patience during the many hours we worked together. I would like at this time to add some last thoughts. A long year ' s hard work went into this annual to capture the events and memories which will fade over the years to come. This past year, we have seen Peace m Viet Nam. the bringing home of our POW ' S, man again on the moon, the rise of drug addiction, dissent among the people of our country, war, death, and hunger among the people of other nations, and groups rising against our own country. All of us watch this happen and react with our conscience. Gardner-Webb is only a part of this large, trying world. We are even a smaller part and we live and help build tomorrow ' s standards for Gardner-Webb. Gardner-Webb is a unique col- lege based on what many colleges are not. and it is a Christian College and helps to develop fine Christian young men and women to chal- lenge the world as it stands today. Each of us has the chance to explore the vast sums of knowledge it holds, both in books and in per- sonal relationships which will enable us to be- come a better and more aware citizen of the world. In attending Gardner-Webb you have been given the chance to be an individual, not just a number, or a face in a classroom. We have a chance to explore the world of Gardner-Webb College and ourselves and find the potential that is here. If you can find d ' need in Gardner- Webb, she can find one in you and we as stu- dents can help build her to become a better and lasting college. We must define our own world, and then the worlds outside We must not only establish goals for today, but we must establish goals for tomorrow and with the help of God we can im- prove the things that we do not agree with. Each person must establish his own stan- dards and beliefs, and then he must live his life in accordance with his own beliefs for there is where his self lies. m V With these last thoughts, the 1973 anchor is concluded, it is now past ... I say to each of you go out and find your dreams of reality and live to correct the mistakes of yesterday and improve tomorrow. In closing, I would like to share a poem by an unknown author which fits our life at Gard- ner-Webb . , . This IS not primarily the place we have to be. It is the place where we are. This is not our prison but our home. It is the road we must walk and the walking of it is called life. Because we will walk it only once, then how important is it that we should walk with some purpose that we can call our own . John Fowler Editor 1973 Anchor Staff Editor: John Fowler Staff: Ann Crump.
