DOROTHY W. HAMRICK Registrar We, the students of Gardner-Webb College, dedicate this Anchor of nineteen hundred and fifty three to one whom all love and respect, Mrs. Dorothy W. Hamrick. We first met Mrs. Hamrick when we received our letter of acceptance. The day when we, the students, arrived on the campus Mrs. Hamrick greeted us with a smile and a hearty welcome. Since that time she has spent many hours in work of which we students are not aware. All of her efforts she gives graciously in the interest of the students. We dedicate this 1953 Anchor to you, Mrs. Dorothy W. Hamrick, as a token of our love and appreciation. m ESSSSE r aimeKiBa TO OUR STUDENTS: " Something hidden. Go find it. Go and look behind the Ranges — Something lost behind the Ranges. Lost and waiting for you. Go! " " Anybody might have found it, but — His Whisper came to Me. " If in these days of study and loafing; of glorious friendships and broken trusts; of faith and doubt; of failure and success; of fulfillment and disillusionment — amid the conflicts, contradictions, harmonies, and overtones; you have heard a Whisper that has created within you an infinite longing for that which is above your reach, you are growing up; and this little book will be a treasure chest of beautiful memories whether the way has been easv or hard. To have and to hold is each precious memory of common experiences, trials, victories, and defeats, mutual loves and friendships, bonds of fellowship and spiritual understanding. Never to be forgotten are the many friend- ships made during the past two years — for friendship is a major part of college life. Glancing backward, all the struggles of the two short years seem of little importance. For the reward is great to know one has fought a good fight and has been victorious . . . To live and to serve is the aim of the G.W. graduate as he leaves his campus to advance in that wide un- known of tomorrow. 14 : « .T?L, ' ±Fzyw:-i:.- " .s- ' - -.- .: __ ___ iaiw»iwjg R?aa»g - m Nancy Rebecca Anthony Shelby, North Carolina Secretarial Day Student 1, 2. After going through Orientation Week and " Rat Day, " we then felt we were full fledged members and a vital part of G.-W.C. Many of the freshman boys have contributed greatly to the sports life of our campus, even to sitting on the bench. The freshman girls built up our anticipation for a great holiday by entertaining with a well-enjoyed Christmas party. The main project of the freshman class was to compliment our sophomores with the annual Junior-Senior Banquet. We are looking forward to returning next year, and taking up where the Sophomores leave off this year. We shall always remember Gardner- Webb College and cherish the memories of our freshman year. 24 IMHfhri MM « «..: «, jk W»nt c ' V tifctth r 6 C o ff R«!f Owe Patricia Adams, Ann Banning, Valeria Banning, Peter Banus, Virgil Bargoil, Gail Baucom, Ted Bechtler. BASEBALL The baseball team was not to be omitted in the final sports analysis at Gardner- Webb in the 1951-52 banner year. After the football forces came through with the first North Carolina State crown in history and the cagers enjoyed a mediocre cam- paign, the Bulldog baseballers came within a hair of adding a second championship award to the school. In a ten-game spree in the rugged Central Carolinas conference, the locals, piloted by capable Norman Harris, blasted out eight wins against two losses to tie Oak. Ridge, a team that had run rough-shod over everyone until they challenged the Bulldogs in a two--ame set on the Cadets ' home lot toward the end of the race. G-W slashed out a pair of stirring wins to tie the military outfit for the loop pinnacle in the final standings. Insufficient time thwarted chances of a play-off between the two teams, therefore, co-champions were declared. Harris had one of the finest teams in years at Gardner-Webb, sprinkled with ex- perience, loaded with hitting power, fast and well-balanced. On the season the Bulldogs copped nine wins and lost five. Much to Harris ' dismay, the Bulldogs had to play four games before they could win one, losing three straight as the lid lifted. But the tide turned as the locals won eight straight games before Mars Hill punched out an 11-2 win in a non circuit bout in the mountains. Wingate sat G-W down on four hits to carve out a photofinish 2-1 triumph. It was the Bulldogs ' second loss in conference plav— and their last of the season, for Belmont Abbey ' s Crusaders found the Baptists hard to handle here in the final test May 14, as G-W ' s Bob Myers tossed a four-hitter as his teammates blasted out 10 safeties and eleven runs in the 11-2 conference win. 52 " •Vic " IMM MM aU m SZ3 WOMEN ' S ATHLETIC PROGRAM The Woman ' s Athletic Program is designed to promote for all students an interest in wholesome leisure time activities, to organize and admmister a varied and interesting athletic program, and to stimulate a spirit of fellowship and comradeship through participation and competition. There is keen competition between classes in volley ball, basket- ball, and Softball tournaments as they vie for the trophy awarded on Field Day. Individual standouts come into their own in shuffleboard, ping-pong, and badminton. The Woman ' s Program is climaxed in the Spring and the annual May Day festivities. f} £ $ OOO0f Virginia Huggins Martha Gantt Sue Vance Joan Propst Cathy Prince, Chief Joyce Hamrick Joann Rhinehardt Wilma Gathings CHEERLEADERS MONOGRAM CLUB Henry Smith President Darreil Wilson Secretary Tommy Beard Darreil Wilson Bill Fitzpatrick ' Coach Norman Harris Henry Smith Steve Morrisett Henry Reyonlds Joe Robertson Jimmy Moore Bill Cathey Clifford Carpenter Bob Workman Bunny Price Blair Little Norman Hardin Bill Wallace Kelion Henshaw George Grogan Ken Brady Ernie Byerly Doug Fitzpatrick Ernie Diaz James Garrison Bob Myers Don Moore Gothard Overcash Richard Yearwood Ernie Beheler Ken Queen Don Elliott Bill Bates 54 I -Kt fV ' . ■ I V iiZ J. .
